Spall-liner on CDC?

28 posts in this topic

I'm currently running the standard Vert Stab, Rammer, and Optics.  Is it worth it to replace one of these with a spall-liner?  If so, which one and why?

No, never.

Why use spall liner when HE shells are going to pen you regardless?

Why is this even a question anyway? Spall liners are universally useless since you aren't going to get hit by non-pen HE often enough to notice the effects.

IIRC spall liner works only for non penetrating HE hits?

Oh.  Well then yeah that is totally useless.

Thanks for the help.

Spall liner is decent if it is super heavy, but often something else is better. The only tank that really wants spall liner alot is O-I, because it improves chances to win against other O-Is and it lessens the damage pretty notably from quick firing cancers which are common on tier 6.

On CDC, why do you even consider when arty oneshots you anyway when it hits?

I thought it reduced all HE damage, not just non-penning.  Therefore it might have been useful protection against derps and cancer.

Sadly it appears not.  Sorry for the noob question.

1. Spall liner only works vs non-penetrating HE hits

2. Spall liner does not reduce the damage you take by the percentage in the tooltip. Instead, the percentage is a multiplier for your armour's effectiveness against HE.

The damage calculation for non-damaging hits is something like <nominal HE damage> divided by <two> subtracted by <armour>.

So, if you get hit by a non-penetrating 600 damage HE shell with let's say 60mm of armour, without a spall liner that's 240 damage (600/2-60), while with a spall liner, let's just say it's something like 50%, because I'm too lazy to look it up, you'd end up taking 210 damage instead (600/2-60*1.5).

So, even a 50% spall liner bonus (and in reality, it only gets like a 20% bonus or something like that) with the current mechanics would be utterly useless on the CDC (as well as on pretty much every other tank).

the devs split the spall liner in different categories, because it was trash. now only the superheavy is somewhat useful on tanks which cannot avoid artillery shells, because it reduces non penetrating he dmg and increases crew member hp in case shells pen your tank.

Spall liner isn't even worth on tanks such as Maus or other superheavy, since you're wasting a slot on which you could mount something far more useful.

Because perhaps, oh I dunno... he might not know/understand how it works?

Heavy and Super Heavy spall liners are really good for reducing crew fatalities. The Tortoise's loader positioned in the Cupola weakspot isn't as big of a deal with a SH spall liner on.

You might be able to justify a medium spall liner if you're having serious issues with crew fatalities, but its worthless for the HE damage reduction.

Or if you double stack first aid, which avoids wasting an equipment slot.

Last time I checked, biscuits and tea give a better bonus than vents.

People come here to learn, and some game mechanics are not that well described, even on the wiki. Maybe you could fix that instead of being salty about people asking questions? ;)

Counterpoint: Do you subscribe to the kamikaze lyfe? If so, spall liner will make you *slightly* heavier, so you can ram *slightly* moar.

Still a shitty choice, but at least its for teh mad lulz.

He's yellow with a low battle count. You can't assume he knows everything in the book. This is a forum, it's here for helping shitters knowing how the game works.

What is with people here on Wotlabs and hostility? You are defending the question and insulting him in the same damn post. Glass houses. :)
