AMX 50 120

177 posts in this topic

Probably one of the most frustrating and fun tank I've ever played.  It does perform so well but it is just so frustrating sometimes.  My DPG used to be sitting at 2.5k, now it rose up to 3.1k after finally getting the 120mm (don't recommend playing this tank at all with the 100mm, the Lorraine is useless enough with the 100mm...).  Looking to get 3.5k DPG and 85% win rate at the finish of the grind.

Pros

  • High penetration on AP ammo, 325 APCR pen.  (high pen is one of the main advantage of this tank)
  • Very good mobility, feels better than E-50 and M46
  • Agility very good as well
  • High DPM + autoloader.  You fire 5.33 rounds a minute, compared to M103's 5.36 rounds a minute.  Do keep in mind that you can't a rammer though
  • High accuracy, one of the most underrated traits.  You have better accuracy than an M103, combined with that extremely high penetration, you are an excellent sniper compared to T54E1
  • Gun mantlet gives some troll bounces, and it does feel good to be bouncing shots with this tank.

Cons

  • Survivability is shit if you don't play it right.  Basically no armor other than a few rare bounces.
  • Never played a tank with camo this bad, no matter how many trees you hide behind, you will get spotted once you shoot.  And once you get shot, you know you won't be able to bounce anything
  • Gun depression is okay but the elevation.........................................................................
  • Going to take 2 bullet points to express how bad the elevation is but it's actually the most fucking terrible elevation I've ever fucking seen in a fucking tank.
  • Aim time is bad, but accuracy on the move is quite good
  • 3.33 between shot reload is not bad, also it's good because instead of just dumping all your shells quickly and missing a lot such as in the T54E1, you can take carefully aim with that 3.33 seconds and it actually forces you in a good way to aim when you're sniping

tl:dr - Strong mobility with a gun that doesn't need to spam gold to reliably penetrate your enemies.  A tank that makes basically any player scramble for cover with deadly accuracy and penetration.    But also a tank that everyone will aim for first, especially when they have xvm and you have good stats.  One of the most difficult tanks at tier 9 to play well.

p.s. the picture linking thing is bugged for me right now, will link pics later

Seems like you're good at crushing teams with it >_>

It has a powerful gun on an autoloader so of course it can dish out damage like no tomorrow. It's just because of the horrendous gun depression/elevation there are many places that other Tier 9s can go that the 50 120 can't. It's an extremely frustrating tank to play when you compare it to other comfy tanks like the T-54 and WZ-111 1-4 but once in a while it gets the job done.

It basically forces you to learn the limitations on terrain. I definitely learned a lot from this tank, and became a much better tanker for it. For that I am grateful.

Ah, very nice. This line is my next one to go up. I already have the T57, so is the 50B even worth getting? Or is it worth going up this line just to get the 50 120?

Also, any chance to get some replays?

Yeah, I noticed that a few weeks ago and posted a comment about it and Neverwish actually responded and told me why. Pretty funny

Thanks for the review!

Very good game example showing what the AMX can do and what it cannot, much appreciated! Especially the point of pulling back and reloading after 2 shots (unlike the T69 etc.) is good advice, I've been caught out too often trying to squeeze in no. 3.

How would you compare it to the T54E1 and do you think it's a good move to start playing the T54E1 after having finished the 120? I am really enjoying the 120 and I am afraid that once I start playing the T54E1 I might lose the fun of grinding with the 120.

I have a love-hate relationship with mine. Especially late game, it can swing the tide of battle almost on its own but that elevation or rather the complete lack thereof have killed me repeatedly. This tank just can't get it up. Give it some viagra!

I've lost interest in grinding past the 50 100 for the moment. Valachio, how would you rate the 50 120 vs 50 100 for its tier?

I found that the T54E1 is superior for supporting med platoons (ideally T-54, imo). The tougher armor and faster burst make a big difference.

Any chance for a 50B review, Valachio?

Hey Valachio would you say this stat for the AMX 50 120 be good since I grind this tank from stock?

Also, I do not have premium so the average xp is base xp (except that highest xp earned which was probably during a bonus code time)

And how much base xp do you need to get in order to get ace tanker in this tank?? I have been trying very hard but just can't get it yet.....

And also, I seems to get 4k+ damage games in this tank often but does not earn corresponding xp in it (like about 900-1050 with 4k+ damage), I do not know why....(Maybe because I play this tank pretty passively and let others spot the enemies that I deal damage to??)

I got my ace tanker in it with 1833 exp last week.

Val i know this is an old thread but some questions for you (60k to go to the 50b)

First off some map tactic questions:

Arctic Region seems to be my weakest map for this tank. Ive been told to go to B4 most of the time (situationaly obviously, but I'm finding my team often will push too far forwards in the B2 area leaving me near useless unless i try to push forward, but as youve said, trading in this tank isn't ideal.

On Cliff I find myself at a loss as I dont have the depression to really work the hill leading to lighthouse, and i find my speed to be just a hair too slow for mid.

The speed issue seems to remain the same on karelia, i feel too slow to take hill, but if i try and sit back and shoot at what climbs the hill im spotted and easily damaged.

Final map question, I always try to go mid on Mines, but what do you feel the viability of the island is?

Last question for you is that I've recently taken to running small repair/medkit/large repair and I'm liking it. Do you feel i would be better off taking coffee as my third item instead? What influences your decision (I saw you had coffee in your video)

Thanks for your time

Is it worth the grind for the AMX 50B or are you better off just holding at the 50/100 for autoloader fun-ness?

I enjoy the 50 120. Tricky to get the hang of especially with its 6 deg of depression and 8 deg of elevation, but it has led to some great games. I cant speak of the 50b yet though

Try playing the 120 more like a TD might help you on maps like Arctic Region, Mines etc. Like playing an oversized hellcat w/o the camo, as in >300m range engagements. On mines that would mean camping the first part of the game at the borders of the map and using your speed later when you start to mop up.
