Rexxie reacted to Pipinghot in The Case Against The 3/5/7 Match Maker (READY)
Preface: I know I'm necro'ing an old thread (July 5, 2017), so if you're not interested in this topic now is your chance to move on. I was only just now made aware that this thread existed.

It figures that the one time I get quoted & referenced extensively on WoTLabs is also a time when I made some pretty serious errors, and committed the sins I have argued against frequently when people write posts using tin foil hat thinking on the forums. Life is funny that way.

1) Confirmation bias. I was thoroughly convinced that the old MM had a lot more "awful" match ups than there really were, and confess that I was thoroughly surprised by seeing the numbers showing that being bottom tier was simply not much of a problem in the past. Relying on memory is relying on a faulty tool for discussions of this type.
2) Using intuition-math instead of actual numerical-math. I was using reasoning on how it seemed 3/5/7 was working, rather than looking for real data on how it truly was working. No matter what you feel is true, it's important to allow the data to tell you what's actually true. Feelings are not facts.
3) Got sucked in by Wargaming's marketing tricks. Never take it for granted that the game company is correct, even when you believe that their intentions are sincere. I still believe that WG's change to the 3/5/7 format was well intentioned, and was a sincere attempt to address long standing complaints from their player base. But even if they were honest and sincere that doesn't mean they got it right - and as it turns out they got it wrong.

So first to @Liberty75 I would like to say, "Mea culpa", and then say that I'm thankful someone did the work, used good methods to gather data and then did a good analysis of the data to arrive at valid conclusions.
/salute

This tanks looks like they took the ugly hull design of the british tanks and combined it with the ugly turret design of american tanks. I'm half tempted to say it's a good safe sex advertisement, and half tempted to say it's adorable...

Rexxie got a reaction from Deus__Ex__Machina in M35 Marathon Megathread
The XP requirements here are pretty serious stuff, achieving the full 312,000 base XP required to finish the marathon is going to be a lot of work. If you're used to a premium account and the occasional booster, 312k base XP is enough to go from T1-T10. That's not too difficult if you had a month to finish, but with only 2 weeks you're going to have to be very committed. It's a little more manageable if you try to hit as many of the achievement-based unlocks as possible, but you're still looking at hundreds of games to finish the last few stages.
The only way to do this as a casual is to finish the first 6 or 7 stages and purchase the rest, which I assume is WG's plan.
(also the premium looks fairly boring imho but what do i know)

There has been some activity in my modelling desk too lately, here are some work-in-progress photos of my current project. It's an old Tamiya kit from late 70's that I've been using as a practice model for color modulation. At this point pretty much all basic painting is done and in next stage there will be some detail painting and then the weathering starts. Comments?

Yeah, double post... Sorry.
Edit. No2, is it showing now? Photobucket is ****...

Hey folks. Still waiting for patch 1.0 to make/break the game.  Played a few matches with the T-10M since the patch, found out that I'm still a bad scrub, and moved on to something else.

Anyway, here's my progress on a Tiger I in 1/35 by Academy. I took a previously built kit of mine and practiced doing winter whitewash via hairspray technique. Also used vallejo's snow effects for the first time. Going to paint my nearly finished Leningrad Tiger I soon - so this is warmup practice for that. Hope you folks like it.  Constructive criticism and suggestions are highly appreciated. Thanks!

Also, while i'm here @Never, do you have any idea why my spoiler tags are fucked?  I could only ever have one spoiler tag, everything that came after it would nest in the initial one if there were any line breaks at all, which meant no embedding gifs in different spoiler tags for each one since gfycat embeds automatically add line breaks that can't be deleted
For example:
test

test2
results in the proper behavior:

but
test

test2
results in this garbage:

Impressions from the 1.0 test server:
Incredibly beautiful update. You're going to be blown away if you haven't played it yet. The new forest garage is a breath of fresh air, too. The only new visual that annoys me is the grainy anti-aliasing - 1.0 has far more detailed and small textures/models, especially on foliage, and the anti-aliasing gets a bit spoiled when the camera is moving. This should be less of a problem on larger monitors, but it's certainly noticeable at 1920x1080.
...but a very buggy one. Almost everything is just visual/audio bugs, but there's a lot of them. Flickering shadows, silently receiving damage, ceaseless reload noise etc. There's a lot of this kind of stuff wargaming has to burn through before release date. I wouldn't be too surprised if the planned march release is held back until april or even may, just going by what still needs to be done.
From my experience, ranged combat/camo abuse is coming back in a smol way. Some maps have been flattened out, which allows longer sight & engagement ranges. TDs in particular will be (even) more popular. We're still well within corridor territory, but you can do something other than brawl a bit more often now.
...but the actual map design of some of these reworked maps is still WG-tier, so that "something other than brawl" will be camp, especially for pubbies. As usual the best spots are still ten seconds from spawn. It's really a mixed bag. I like longer engagement ranges and I think unicums will do better because of them, but I've got my doubts if the gameplay has actually been improved. We'll have to see. Until WG addresses T8 & T10 balance and the failure of the new template-based MM, I'm not going be too excited for the future of the game. With that said, I'm happy 1.0 is at least an improvement over live. All too often WoT patches end up being one step forward and two steps back.

Rexxie got a reaction from Monkey in Hellcat Appreciation Thread
I'm not going to pretend to know which of the two are better, but the gun handling difference is beyond huge. The numbers for the Hellcat's bloom values are hellish. 0.36 track/0.20 turret? Holy cow. That's 183 levels of gun bloom on a chassis that has twice the top speed and acceleration - it makes the KV-2's bloom look like a 62A's.
I mean, yeah, the aimtime/pen/acc makes it nowhere near that bad, but if we're just talking about numerical improvements here, this is by far the most obvious. .36/.20 vs .23/.16 is absurd.

Recently we had an issue updating the statistics. This was caused by the database server running out of space due to a logging error. The database has been cleaned up and statistics should be updating again, with plenty of room to spare.
