Zinn got a reaction from OperatorError in Are projectors usefull for gaming?
0,017 seconds for the best option might not sound too bad but the problem is that most people don't really have a concept of how damn fast human reaction speed truly is. To compare, Battlefield 4 launched with the appalling tickrate of 10hz, meaning it updates 10 times per second. This was enough to make the game completely unplayable because people would get instantly killed, die around corners, magically trading kills all over the place etc. In comparison, CoD runs at 30hz, which is okay but still sub-optimal (you really want 45+). So adding a ~0,02 second lag or worse on top of whatever lag natively exists in your system and on the server/client really can make a big difference even in a casual environment. Remember that someone who doesn't play on the equivalent of a laggy system will have a straight advantage over you in everything you can possibly do.
On top of that, there are just a whole bunch of practical issues in terms of appropriate spacing, having the right lighting setup, the right audio setup, shit being hilariously expensive in a lot of ways and so on. The only real benefit of a projector would be split screen gaming in something slow paced or offline but unless you have friends over for couch gaming on a daily basis, it's not recommended either.

Zinn got a reaction from EndlessAgony in AW History
I found arty pretty easy to deal with but otherwise most of Shade's stuff is something I experienced too. I thought the game was a lot of fun up to tier 6 and then I stopped playing because apparently I'm not allowed to outplay BS MBTs unless they go full retard.
Better grind, better in terms of RNG and better maps matter a lot but when you completely fuck up your end game, the most important part of an MMO, you're screwed. WoT only survives at the size it is because the tiers 8-10 are generally fun and more skill based than the rest. I think most people would happily trash 90% of the tier 7 and below tanks because they're more or less ass to drive or face horrible imbalances like getting one-shot but the promise of fun in the end keeps people going. AW does it the other way around, where people get hooked on great low tier play and then it slowly devolves into a No Fun Allowed high tier, where MBTs are the only viable vehicles and you have to pixel hunt or HE spam. I'm pretty sure AW's essential problem isn't total amount of players trying the game but a complete lack of user retention beyond tier 5/6.
I don't give too much for the NA server dying because it's basically always been a shit territory to sell tank games in for some reason, if we're judging by WoT standards. I'm not sure if its South America driving the numbers down but there are damn near a billion people in the Americas, plus all the people avoiding SEA, and yet there were only something like 20-25% of the EU pop online at the best of times.
I've pointed it out before but AW went the way of the WoW clone. Rather than creating something different enough, they used the Clone Tool and tweaked it a little bit while forgetting the most important part. If it's like WoW (WoT) and doesn't play better in the parts that matter, why should I abandon my perfectly good account in the other game?

Zinn got a reaction from Equanimity in What do you think about a Social Difficulty Curve?
But that only applies if you truly want to get good at the game, or any game, which most people don't set out to do at first. The difference between something like WoT and Battlefield, CoD, CS, Rocket League or even RL games like Chess or MTG is that the objective in those games is extremely clear, they play the same way every time in terms of basics and the rules of the games are painfully obvious.
I mean, try playing 10 battles starting in a tier I and ending in a tier X and tell me how similar the playing experience is. Or how about Arty vs TD vs Medium vs Heavy? The game doesn't even tell you how the spotting or camo system works and the values for most vehicles don't add up because the game doesn't tell you what soft stats are or how they work either. It's a complete clusterfuck and that's before we start adding the real skill killers like RNG in its various forms from uneven tank types to mismatches tiers and module damage. I also cannot possibly overstate how much not being able to respawn in a battle does to destroy your sense of progression in a video game. Imagine if Counter Strike was a single round and that's it. No round 2, 3 or 4 to figure out who's really better, back to the server browser after 1 death. I think a lot of people who have played the game long term also severely underestimate the effect of the map pool on performance. WoT has a shitload of maps now, so think about how many times you need to play one to fully understand it and then realise what it would be like as a new player today. I started in the beta, so I only had to learn something like 8 maps and then I've been able to learn everything new as it comes. EZ PZ, I have 3 months to learn the two new maps or whatever before the next map or two comes out. Someone starting today probably has to memorize over 40 maps that appear randomly. He can play all day for a week and still miss out on some maps because they aren't in rotation.
All the other games have bad players too but the reason why WoT has such extreme tomatoes is that there's no help at all and the only way you can realistically improve is by going outside the game. I mean, most people on Wotlabs itself will tell you that they spent up to 20k games being complete shitlords before going the route of realising that WG doesn't do shit to help them improve and went to Google/wiki/Wotlabs/Youtube/Twitch for real answers. But try loading up just about any other PvP game and you will learn everything you need to know within the first 2 hours of play, it's even one of the main reasons the singleplayer campaign exists today. It's only if you want to get really good that you might want to go outside the game and look at the hidden stats like recoil multipliers and damage drop-off.
TL;DR: WoT is carefully crafted to keep people bad for as long as possible, unlike any other PvP game in the world. The only reason people even play it is because losers get something like 50-66% of what the winners get if the team isn't completely destroyed. Really good performers on a losing team can even out-score the top guys on the winning team. In other words, it's okay to stay bad because you're failing upwards at a slightly slower pace than a good player. A decent player might have a tier 10 tank in 1k battles but that's okay because the 45% player will have their first in 1500

Yes, the game actually gets a good bit easier after this point. If you haven't done so already, you will be able to farm chunks and slabs in New Londo to upgrade all your shit easily, it will become easier to farm souls 'cause enemies drop a lot of them and since you will be able to warp between bonfires, most of the travel risks are gone too. Can't wait for a Tomb of the Giants reaction, though

I don't play tenks, although I'm sure I'll get sucked into it again at some point. It's not even the shitters, the cancer or the goldnoobs (), it's the average RNG. RNG on pens, damage and even hitting shit is why I never truly bothered getting gud. Fuck SerB pressing his "get rekt" button when I need to hit a target that takes up 90% of my reticle, fuck rolling 600 on my 750 average dmg Ehundo shot and fuck losing 3 modules at once 'cause RNG decided the shell bounces around a bit.
On the upside, experiencing the shitters in WoT and the extreme RNG means that I don't even get mad at other games anymore. I've played through infinitely worse BS than they throw at me and even the most retarded own goal in RL can't make me do more than chuckle
I do miss the fun people and the rage PMs.

Altho I gotta admit the game isn't as fun as it used to be (for me personally and besides rage  at connection speed), simply cuz u know the mechanics better and thus get more frustrated by the results of random events and retardation among the player base.

I guess yoshi will get there, but just like in tonks,  it will take him 40k+ battles (at least)

Honestly, it comes down to the fact that there is more than one way to skin a cat and that WoT's setup is really really bad for stat tracking. It's absurd to think that you need 1k+ battles to be even reasonably close to your actual performance: If we assume a 5 min match length, that's over 83 hours of tanking
If you play over 83 hours of pretty much any other PvP game, you are going to have very useful and very well established stats for your current performance. The reason why WoT is so god damn atrocious for stat tracking is that it functions exactly opposite of all other PvP games: WoT doesn't try to build you up as a player, it tries to force a fairly neutral development for you, although with some room to evolve. That's why you have to face tanks that will one hit kill you or that you can one hit kill (+/- 2 MM), why things like artillery exist (no positional advantage for you, sir!), why there's no balance between tank types and tiers in the MM, why you can fire prem ammo and so on and so on. Most PvP games go in the exact opposite direction, aiming to not give you a vastly different experience each time but giving you the same experience. The variation in those games come mainly from player skill, such as choosing new tactical approaches, picking different classes during a game as a response to engagements, switching weapons as needed and working with what you've got. More importantly, pretty much all PvP games allow respawns to help build you up as a player, letting you respond to the situation in the game and essentially stabilize your stats whether they're good or bad.
Elevating your overall KPG by 0,1 can be a huge skill improvement indicator in other PvP games but in WoT it might just mean I went down and started playing PzIIJ or HEAT Sherman. DPG increases in other games work similarly because it means I started doing more damage over the course of a game but again, in WoT it might just mean I unlocked a Waffle, easily surpassing my shitty 1200 DPG or whatever in 3 shots.
WoT is also much more exposed to general stat manipulation than other PvP games due to the lack of respawns. Platooning easily raises your WR, even at low skill levels, and WILL increase your DPG in almost all instances too. After all, taking someone who you can communicate with is a huge advantage in a game where no one else talks tactics. If I take a squad of friends with me in Battlefield, it will not significantly increase our WR unless we also improve our general play along the way. Respawns mean that the enemy effectively learn to counter our standard tactics over the course of a match and thus we will need to develop another approach. It can still help winning but it won't push our WR from 55% to 68% like it can in WoT.
TL;DR: WoT is built for randomness, not stability, and thus there is no single answer. You either have to get so much better than the other players that you can brute force more wins through sheer slaughter, often involving copious gold spam and using meatshields or you have to forego damage and settle for plugging holes and covering your pubbies. Of course, the 3rd option is just platooning with decent players and instantly receive a 10%+ WR boost but that's not much help in terms of individual performance.

Zinn reacted to CraBeatOff in What is the one thing that pushed you from blue to purple?
This is prob the closest to my answer, In fact, its a very good answer, summed up in my first thought reply which was "knowing where to be and why at all times"
Now, OP, please don't imply this as hubris, its simply n=1 analysis. I have been "purple" as defined by per-tank WN8 for a very very long time now. Sorting my tanks on the WoTLabs.net mainpage by WN8, of the 175 tanks I've played, 95 are "purple" and 20 are "blue". All the blue or less ones date to a 2012-early 2013 (except the E-100 which is another story entirely) or are arty.
So when I look back and try to remember what I was doing during that time period...I was trying to put into practice every Garbad wrote (official forums, this was pre-wotlab forum) about where to be, and why. Garbad rarely wrote about penning shots, or trading hp, he wrote about flanking, positional dominance and scouting. He wrote about making your team better (via flanking, positions and scouting), and about giving teamwork to your hapless pubs. Trading hp is something you do for position. And there were no premium rounds (for credits, which is all I've ever shot) for some of these blue and purple tanks.
I see my Easy 8 in this era. A tank I was very very proud of, because I had been studying Garbad and @CarbonWard and trying to put what they wrote about in perspective. I won 60% in that tank, almost entirely solo, pre-sprem. I did a ton of scouting and hill peeking. I remember working very hard to try to get flanks that either punished those hard fronted 7s and 8s, or which stalled their advances. And trying to use the mobility of the E8 to dog pile into brawls where I could use my plinky DPM effectively.
I see my T-34-85, a tank I played 300 games in to practice, because Garbad said it was a good medium to replicate high tier styles. Decent punch, good dpm, ok but not great armor, pretty good mobility, acceptable vision. Another blue 60%+ winrate tank. Some platooned, a lot lot lot of solo.
Now this is backwards. Most people learn how to pen their shots, discipline themselves not to poke badly, how to make sure your loaded flank rolls hard, and all those skills and they learn that quick. I am a special kind of dumb and learned how to do that much much later. My first "dark purple" tank was the T32 sporting my first 70% winrate and 1k xp/game average. Another one I am proud of. I got this mostly by scouting, I shit thee not. @jacg123 and @Wazoo117 can attest to it, because they were there. I would ridge poke and hold ground on old Serene Coast (the REALLY hilly 1.0 version) and Dragon Ridge (the 2.0 version) and just vision pin and and area deny and light for arty. As is the recurring theme, my damage output was only ok (I only learned how to win more games via crushing damage output in the last year or so) at 1931 dpg in this tank. For comparison sake, I recall @Veril playing the T32 about a year later, using the 90mm (see the higher hit rate) all APCR and winning 82%, with 2500 dpg 1200+ xpg. But lower spots per game :-D and you asked about how to go from blue to purple, not purple to super purple :-D
Anyways there's a ton of people who can teach and show you how to farm hp without losing your own, so you can trade your own later. And thats the quickest and a perfectly effective way to go from blue to purple. But it CAN be done "backwards" where you learn all the positional, teamwork and game-reading stuff first, and then learn to farm damage later.
Some maxims I try to share and have gleaned from others
Your job is to make your team better -from Garbad
Give teamwork, but expect none -me
Some tanks trade HP for position (T-54 style) others force enemies to trade hp for their positions (M46) -from CarbonWard
Your platoon (or team) takes up key positions in the map and squeezes it to a win -also CarbonWard
Never rely on a pubbie for the game winning reset - everyone ever, but oft repeated by @sr360
[Aside - I had to finally learn to output superior damage because I wanted 3 pretty marks on my tanks. I was perfectly happy to win 70% and be merely a purple until they made the pretty marks and sat in that space for almost 2 years. Damn those pretty marks]

    1. Winrate is massively dependent on average tier, and to a lesser extent on tanks played. WN8 has pretty good tier adjustment and better-than-nothing tank adjustment, so the colour scales will diverge if you play decent low-tier tanks. Your tank-adjusted winrate and damage track pretty well, overall.
    2. Winrate is extremely noisy over low battle counts, hence the fluctuation. For example, over 100 battles you have a 95% chance of being within +/-9% of your underlying performance. 1000 battles reduces that to +/-3%, which is still too inaccurate to add anything to WN8.

TBH, I think the main reason they think that way is because the muslim world was more or less spared from Hitler and Stalin's shenanigans compared to other groups and places. They were mostly colonies and thus not the main focus of anything other than a territorial and strategic fight. If they had ever been hunted down to even remotely the extent the jews have been in the course of history, they'd sing a different tune entirely. Europeans are really fucking good at wiping shit out they don't want to exist and there are thousands of years of history backing it up, hence why these bombings won't end well over the long term. Let's not forget that it took 1 generation for Germany to go from the home of Einstein to the 3rd Reich war machine because they were treated like shit and scared about their future.
You can't give democracy to people, it just doesn't work. In the best case scenarios, you get Africa-style conditions with extreme corruption and poverty that is strictly controlled by a powerful elite and at worst you spawn shit like ISIS or start an endless civil war. The Western civil rights/democracy movement started getting into gear after the Black Death with improved rights for peasants due to there no longer being enough of them left to randomly abuse, effectively ending feudalism. And then it still took fucking 300+ years and colonists fighting their own god damn families for the US to become a thing. Not to mention the shenanigans the French did to get started on European democracy, slaughtering anyone who had even a hint of royalty.
You basically can't install a central government in a country where it's mostly a tribal society with shit infrastructure. The village leader in some god forsaken corner of Afghanistan doesn't give a shit about what the president says because the government has no reach or power there. But religious institutions do and when they turn into ISIS-style people, that's who you have to obey if you don't want your place torched. On top of that, ISIS can supply or fund your village because even a few thousand dollars can buy years of supplies or essential tools for the farms. Attacking Iraq was just the most idiotic strategic move in modern history because nobody even bothered thinking about how much of a stabilizing factor Saddam was to the entire region. Having a gigantic resource rich and religiously significant country in the hands of a guy who killed the shit out of religious extremists was pretty handy and served as a giant plug in the tube between people like Bin Laden and the rest of the world.
This shit will never ever be fixed until the average muslim stands up for their own rights and fight back. And that's hard when the West has a hard-on for bombing the region when we decide which Dictator of the Month (that we probably installed to counter commies) we dislike now. It's not like most of the population there thinks it's fun be under constant watch of the muslim inquisition, just like us Europeans didn't think it was much fun when the original one did it here but they need to find a way to hope to get rid of them. And foreign powers bombing their homes really don't do much to stop the ISIS recruitment drive. Just like with Al-Qaeda, you have to deal with the leadership to make the larger network crumble: By the time the US actually killed Bin Laden, his terrorist network was almost completely irrelevant on the world scene because they had their funds frozen and leadership assassinated.
Assist the Iraqi army and other locals in taking out the caliphate, it's a big deal that muslims do it and not Western boots on the ground. Then destroy the economy of the leadership and assassinate any shitlord that pops up on the radar. Leave the middle east the fuck alone from there and hopefully it can stabilize to the point of the population wanting things for themselves and their families, rather than just focusing 100% on not being dead tomorrow.
