Fire_Hive got a reaction from yosoyelnino in An Appeal to the Community
Hello all, I haven't been very active lately but I have been lurking, reading content and occasionally posting a comment or 2. I haven't been playing WoT either but since I kinda grew with this forum it is the community I've connected the most with. Well here is what I ask of everyone: I need your help on making a very important decision, I have been struggling over this decision for quite some time now but can't seem to make up my mind.

Some context before I start: I have dual citizenship (American/Brazilian) and I was born in Florida. Lived most of my teenage years in Tampa, Fl and dreamed of going to college at either UF or USF but that didn't happen cuz my family decided to move to Brazil my junior year (something we all regret very much cuz it didn't work out at all)

In a couple of weeks I will be leaving for the US through a exchange program here in Brazil called Ciencias sem Fronteiras (Science without Borders). In this program I will be going to an American university to study abroad for a whole year (2 semesters + summer activities/internships), after this period I am obligated to return to Brazil and remain there for a period of 2 years before I can leave the country (sketchy, I know). That is because I am supposed to finish my major in Brazil and that would be about the same amount of time necessary to do that. While in the U.S. I will have everything paid for me: tuition, housing and meals; and I also get $300 per month for monthly expenses (entertainment and other stuff). The Uni I will be going to is USF.

The big decision I'm having trouble with is: Should I go through the exchange program and have to return (easy mode but I'm not inclined cuz then I'd have to go back to Brazil)? Or should I risk going it alone with little financial help, looking for a job, working full time and later studying part time but not having to return, and live the rest of my life in the U.S.? (what I want, but also what I'm the most nervous about).

Note: I would be staying at a friends house in Tampa so I all I'd have to worry about is finding a job; also if I go it alone I'd be trying to enroll at USF in spring. I also have 2 years experience in retail for electronics (mostly PC/Notebook/Tablets/smartphones) that would hopefully land me a job somewhere.

Sorry for the wall of text and sorry I don't have a tl;dr version of it. If you guys have any questions regarding my situation plz ask.

Fire_Hive reacted to Dlur in Advice on purchasing first firearm
"Assault weapon" as it is commonly used by the media, liberals, and peeps who don't know any better does not exist.  There are actually Assault Weapons, and they are only available to the military.  They are generally things like anti-tank weapons like the SMAW.  Assault Rifles are a real thing, and again they are a military thing.  An M4 or M16 select fire rifle capable of shooting in both fully automatic burst fire or semi-automatic operation is defined as an Assault Rifle.  Civilians cannot readily own or purchase select fire or fully automatic firearms without jumping through more hoops and spending more money than is worth it.  "Assault weapon" is a political term used to make things sound really scary and thus easier to ban, generally consisting of a regular semi-automatic rifle with a shoulder thing that goes up.

Revolvers are great options for first time handgun purchasers.  Most double-action striker fired handguns (Glocks, Springfield XDs, S&W MPs, etc) are also easy to operate and reliable while still being almost impossible to accidentally discharge without severe negligence.  Regardless of what type of handgun or firearm in general one wishes to acquire training is important and actually going to a range and firing on a regular basis is a must to acquire and maintain proficiency with the weapon.

We've all been 19, except for the people here that may not be 19 yet.  When I was younger I was in some sketchy situations.  I even had a sawed off shotgun pointed at my face once.  I put myself into those shitty situations.  Honestly if  you are in scenarios where you feel like your safety is threatened on a regular basis by your peers then don't fucking associate with those people.  You are not a god damn gang banger.  You are a skinny nerd who plays games on the internet and faps to shitty asian comics.  You have no business hanging out in situations where you feel like you need a handgun to be safe.  And honestly despite this entire thread likely being an April 1st troll, you really don't' strike me as the type of person that would respectfully handle the responsibility of owning a firearm.  You're just a fucking kid.  Get out of the stupid shit situations you are putting yourself into and grow the fuck up first.  Once you aren't so immature you can probably make  better decisions about whether you need a firearm or not.  I say this to you as a conservative, libertarian, gun-toting, 2nd amendment loving, parent: don't get a gun.

Due to the rampant abuse, idiocy, foaming, tantrum throwing and otherwise crappy behavior, as well as an endless string of complaints, political discussions have been formally banned on Wotlabs, this extends to replies as well, to an extent. You will not be warned, you will be RO'd if you try to do it, so just don't.

Fire_Hive reacted to Bridgeburner in Well, rumor has it Russia has now invaded Ukraine.
So the tens of thousands of Ukranians protesting in Kharkiv, Dnepteroprovosk, Odessa and the Crimea against the new EuroMaidan Governemnt were all secretly plainclothes Russian soldiers that infiltrated undercover and posed as civilians to place Russian flags over Ukranian Govt. buildings... right.

In other news, me, Antonio and Paaranoija are actually FSB agents posting undercover, and Wargaming/WoT is a branch of the Russia Today media empire seeking to poison the minds of Western youth.

Fire_Hive reacted to Getsome in Who is running 3840 x 2160 Resolution?
The hurdle right now is the configuration of GPU cores.  If I may simplify just a tad, there is a tradeoff (silicon die area) between texture units and render output pipelines (ROP).

    Definitions first...

Texture: The image rendered over a 3d model. (Example)
Texture unit: Rotates and wraps a texture over a 3d model.
ROP: Renders a single pixel by sampling the textured 3d model.
    ---------------------------------------

If you want a higher quality image at the same frame rate, you want a larger texture - this means you need more texture units to draw details onto an prettier model.  However, if you just want a higher resolution at the same frame rate, you need more ROPs so you can render the textured model faster.

If you make more ROPs than texture units, you end up with a huge, blocky image.  Think minecraft.  If you are bottlenecked by ROPs, you can set the texture quality to whatever you want, and the framerate stays the same.  This was uncommon until 4K, as I'll explain below.

However, if you use more texture units than ROPs, you can do incredibly detailed frames, but at a very slow rate. Think CGI graphics in movies, which are rendered much slower than real time.  If the texture units are the bottleneck, you change between resolutions and framerate stays the same.

    ---------------------------------------

Up until this point, the typical gaming resolution has been 1x (sometimes 2x) 1080p displays, or 3x 1080p at the high end.  So, you build your GPU accordingly.  For AMD graphics, the mid range 7870 solution has 32 ROPs - the high end 7990 has 64 ROPs.  The remaining space on both is dedicated to providing as many texture units as possible.  The ROPs couldn't care what quality texture is rendered, so there was no need to invest more in this area.

But 4K throws that for a loop.  Now there is still plenty of texture processing power available at the high end, but the ROPs are suddenly a bottleneck against such a huge resolution.  The solution is easy; bump it up to 80 or 96 ROPs.  But that will be traded for texture processing area.

Both vendors were caught unawares by the sudden adoption of 4K displays amongst programmers.  I expect that the next batch of GPUs will have an increased ROP count at an expense of texture processing; gamers will be complaining that the tech has stagnated.  The cycle of the gaming industry. ~~~
