I decided to test some of the alternative non-Lego brick brands out there to see what was worthwhile.  Oxford are South Korean Legos with a lot of military themes.  I got this bad boy and it's sitting proudly on my kitchen table.  It was a lot of fun and decent difficulty much like older 1980's Legos were.  Much more satisfying money spent than WG's ridiculous virtual ship prices.

Not that I ever enjoy playing BBs anyway, but iChase made me paranoid of any new lines with this broken mechanic of the game:
Paraphrased:  BB armor is all effed up because of the condensed ranges in game, thus making German armor the only viable.  What are your consensuses?
Since I don't enjoy BBs much anyway, I was holding off until Russian BBs since I'm sure they will be broken in a good way.  40 knots + accurate + 10k HE round or some sh!t.

The queues are just unenjoyable or impossible for 23 hours a day.  I liked the concept of having PVE to fill time and help you grind out a tank or fittings without being a low tier whipping boy constantly, but NA server is like 90% PVE now and that's pathetic.  I find PVE unenjoyable enough, but the grind from tier 8+ is Korean-esque.

The EU server isn't that far behind the NA server.  One bad patch and the numbers are fragile enough to start the death cycle too.  I don't think it's a NA not liking tanks as much problem as it is players in NA were less patient with the progress of the game.  With SIMM leaving next patch and population being the obvious issue, I think a lot of the class balance issues could be helped with better maps.  I'm not sure any major changes can save it now.  They need a huge population boost, not just a few interested in checking out the new patch.  The WoWP analogy seems realistic, even for EU which isn't growing.

Watching that video, it seems the tier 10s pretty much mirror the 8s and 9s.  Same weak spot locations, but the T-14 and Leo2A7 look like they have some huge ass turret ring weak spots.  I can see those being changed, especially on the Leo.  The PL-01 with stronger frontal than T-14 and Leo2A7 lolz.
As for the patch, LT depression is great and all, but the gun handling nerf to them is what ruined them.  It's already stupid playing them and having Leopards that are every bit as fast and maneuverable as you, unless you have a long ass road to pull away on, which is never.  They need hull traverse and gun handling.  Even then, they won't be OP with all the maps moving towards WoT style brawl mechanics and nowhere to actually play in the open.

Vitellius9 got a reaction from Acumen in Why the NA server should just be put down
I tend to disagree with you on the solo thing Uni.  I pretty much had the same issue Acumen had, held a 56% WR while game had population, dropping nightly/daily now to 51%.  Got it back up to 52% and i.e. yesterday went about 9-16 after having probably my best day of game play ever.  I'm sure it has a lot to do with me playing with/against the same 30-40 people.  As CarbonWard stated solo is tough to influence, especially on non-vision maps where you have to brawl frontally. The luck of the MM draw is significant when you are facing good platoons and constantly teamed with Testiculas [Sack].
Whether it be WoT, WoWS or AW, I wish someone would have the balls to throw in a skill ceiling to be able to play specific tiers.  I'm not saying alienate all your customers, but give the 75% non-troglodytes a chance to enjoy their teammates.  I lost 4 f-ing PVE matches in a row upon log in yesterday, because pubbies in a tier 5-7 spread playing Challenger 1s can't even manage 2k damage in a PVE match.  I totally understand losing Banshee etc when MM gave you 5 pubbies all in AFVs, but you should have to learn to play a tank before you move up to the next one.  I also had a full health M1 Abrams player I was watching in a PVE match 1v1ing an A.I. XM1 where he lost to it and did 1 damaging shot.  It's players like this who ruined WoT et al and they're really hurting a game with only a handful of players.

I didn't expect that to be a real link.  I took it as seriously as beaver powered DDs running on maple syrup.
I'd love to see multiple bastardized lines of interesting real ships as opposed to single nation lines of pretend stuff.  I guess tiering becomes an issue though, since most countries that couldn't complete a single line are likely to all end around the same time period equating to the same tier ceiling in game.  The game needs some sexier ships though, I'm sure Italians would be nice.

Yeah getting torp hits on other DDs is more luck.  You typically just launch them to force them to move away from torping you, keep them honest or hope for a lucky hit.  Guns are the way to go especially as a Gremmy or USN DD.  That being said, tiering doesn't make that much of a difference since you are typically firing the same gun size and same RoF.  I liked the Clemson better than the Wickes and Farragut for instance, since you can generally do the same damage but are more maneuverable.

Vitellius9 got a reaction from tv23 in sad state of carrier play
You're pretty accurate there,  carriers are in that arty niche where they're either going to be stupid OP or underpowered.  After playing pretty intensively, I haven't even bothered logging back in for two weeks.  The game went far backwards with 3.1.  Aside from the CV nerfs, the insane rudder buffs to everything made the game so much worse.  You have BBs and CVs easily dodging every volley or DD torpedoes from 2.5km away.

Vitellius9 got a reaction from TouchFluffyTail in WoWS: Fatally Flawed?
I see that now, carriers are becoming much easier to deal with tier 6+.  It's still a shitty arty mechanic, mainly because torpedoes are just so devastating.  I am a little better at avoiding now too since I played a carrier up through maxed out Independence.  I see the potential to carry more in a battleship, but damn that BB RNG sucks.  The over penetration mechanics are bad enough, but I hate seeing full salvos constantly go half over the deck and half falling short....like 1 shot should hit at least.  Plus the damage rolls on every gun and dive bomber and just wacky RNG, especially BB, whereas the torpedoes are just full on direct arty hit damage or finishing move insanity.

One carrier buff I'd like to see is to fighters.  I like being an anti CV carrier and killing all their planes, but it seems easier to kill fighters with fighters than bombers.  There's very little to no affect on killing torpedo bombers with fighters as you catch them coming in.  It seems like their hp pool is much bigger than fighters which you can knock out fairly quickly.  Hell, when I send two sets of fighters on to one torp squad I rarely kill 1 before they bomb and it usually takes following them all the way back to their home CV to kill 3 or 4, which means your fighters taking a lot of AA damage on the way.  I even like to get my carrier closer and bait their planes in for the substantial AA damage.

Overall the CVs are just a shitty mechanic like arty though, I can't see how they're going to make it work practically without being underpowered or overpowered just like sky cancer.

Vitellius9 reacted to Captain Virgil Hilts in Garbad's Initial opinions on WOWS
    1. Not necessarily so. U.S. carriers were mostly set on fire due to bombs or kamakaze attacks. And the U.S. had very little success with torpedos (witness the battle of Midway) against any ship. Torpedo bombers were slow and vulnerable, and had to get in very close to make very well aimed attacks with a lot of torpedos in the water, in order to get even a relatively poor hit ratio. Unescorted torpedo bombers were, for the most part, easy pickings for fighters, and once they were low and slow enough to get into a torpedo run, for anti-aircraft batteries. All of Torpedo 8 was shot down, with only George Gay surviving, at Midway, with no hits. Not sure the U.S. even scored a torpedo hit with any of the 3 torpedo squadrons. And the U.S. dominated that battle for the most part.

    2. Actually, the later U.S. battleships were designed, and then regularly updated, to be anti-aircraft platforms. The most modern of them were good at it. It's one reason the U.S. sacrificed some armor for speed, in order to have battleships be fast enough to stay with carriers and screen for them. Destroyers didn't really even have enough firepower to defend themselves, cruisers were iffy, but later U.S. battleships could fill the air with a steel umbrella, eventually the Japanese resorted to suicide attacks of one form or another just to get hits.

    3. If any player can consistently get reliable torpedo hits against a decent enemy player, provided the "victim" isn't alone or nearly alone, and very slow, then topedo bombers are fairly OP compared to reality.

    4. That's somewhat true, in some cases. But, most often, carrier squadrons were launched a couple of scouts first, maybe, attack planes shortly after, and then fighters, to escort the attack groups. Then another wing of fighters usually launched even later, as a CAP (combat air patrol) to protect the fleet. Attack planes were regularly and often used to actively search for the enemy in likely areas. Outside of PBY scout amphib planes at Midway doing early spotting, it was attack planes that found the Japanese at both Coral Sea and Midway, for example.

By late 1942, the U.S. considered torpedo bombers to be almost completely obsolete. At best they were a decoy to keep the ememy from concentrating on the dive bombers.

I can see dive bombers being pretty powerful, but if torpedo bombers are all that and a bag of chips, then something is really wrong.

You know whats different in CW from 2012 and now? We didn't have mega blocs back then, in 2012, everyone had a 2 or 3 allies there were no major consequences if you wardec'ed someone, nowadays, you either join a bloc, or you can fuck off and rot with sub 5k gold somewhere in Canada.

In the end, Otter killed CW, Relic killed CW, CHAI killed CW, VILIN killed CW, G killed CW,  Bulba killed CW.
In the end, We reap what we sow.

My aussie "mate" just started playing on EU server and his ping is stable at around 400-450ms. How do you play this game in a way that's workable with high ping? So far I made him get KV-1 because its a good and fun line in general and it worked out pretty well for him, but KV-1 plays out very differently from KV-85 and up which is peek-a-boom. You have very little time when peeking and you need to aim in the right spots quickly which is hard when the server reticle is like 50 degrees to the side of where you aim constantly.

I tried figuring out why the KV-1 works so well and I figured it's more of a staying power tank rather than peek-a-boom so maybe some heavies like E 100 and hull down tanks like IS-7, T29 etc. would work well? I'm assuming TDs would work well but sitting in a bush is really not an option. T28-like tanks could be an option but probably not. Lights are probably really hard to play with lag, but perhaps sneaky/support meds like 140 / T62A, Leo 1 etc could work too?

What he says he likes is basically "good guns" which means good pen for him, but also seems to really like the brawling maps so I'm sure he would love peek-a-boom tanks like the IS-3, but not sure how they would play out with lag.

He does lead shots well I think, most of the ones I've seen of him shooting at people far away on the move have almost been heaps better than the average pubbie despite his 500ms.

Garbade I am going to make the wild assumption that you never served in the military. I did, I was in the Army as an 11c in the early 80s. The military trains you to, not think for yourself, not analyze situations quickly, and to do as your told. At least for the vast majority of its members. Now put that guy into this game. He is used to taking orders, not making decisions in a split second.

I find the closest real life comparison is tournament paintball. The fields are fixed and semi balanced. The focus is on lanes of fire and sweetspots. Every time your opponent moves a player the lanes of fire change. The key to winning is eliminating a gun from the game.

It is OP and I use it every way I can, but I can't imagine not having it now.  Pubbies would camp harder and players actually trying to make something happen without being yolo stupid would just get penalized for forgetting how spotty vision mechanics can be.  Such as the times you sit there in a tier 8 medium with recon, situational awareness and optics only to wonder what keeps spotting you only to find later that it was the typical red/orange KV-1S pubby getting divine blessing from the RNGesus.

Vitellius9 reacted to KraftLawrence in How would the WotLabs Unica rebalance t10?
You guys are all "balancing" tanks by making them more like each other - that is, you're reducing the uniqueness of the tank.

For example, crab wants to give chinese tanks more depression. That's imo something you shouldn't do as a game designer. The chinese tanks are known for their shit gun depression - it's what makes them unique. If you think this tank isn't strong enough, then buff it's strong point. Could give the guns better dispersion, or more reliable armor - something along those lines.

IMO, you should always nerf something by nerfing its weak points, not by making it more similar to everything else. Similarly, you should buff something by buffing its strong points, not by reinforcing its weak points. All the tanks are already similar enough as it is.
