1.  The Mannis did not burn people at Dragonstone (back in season 3 or whatever).  He burned WOODEN IDOLS of the 7, and was deeply troubled by it.  He later seems to recant this hard line, and allows his followers to worship as they wish.

2.  Ser Florent attempted to betray Stannis after the Battle of Blackwater Bay, and was burned.  Stannis and Davos debate this at length, before finally agreeing treason must be punished even if he did it from pure motives and was his brother in law.  But this isn't a lightly made decision.

3.  The Queen orders three men burned for treason while Stannis is away.  Stannis never hears of it as far as I know.

4.  Melissandre and Stannis DISCUSS the morality of burning one innocent boy (edric/gendry) for a greater good, but do not do it.  Frankly, given the reality as he understands it burning seems a justifiable, utilitarian choice.  Despite this, Stanns at Davos' urging decides that burning an innocent can't be done for any reason.  He admittedly wavered, and did this indirectly by letting Davos take Mel's blame.

5.  "Mance" was burned at the wall for oathbreaking.  In reality, it was rattleshirt.  Even the other wildlings agree rattleshirt is a monster.  Mance is sent on a secret mission to winterfell that allows "arya" to escape with theon, which in turn forces roose to leave the castle and attack the "starving," "freezing," "demoralized" stannis using his traitors (which stannis conveniently already knows about, and has prepared some frey pie for).  This is a rather fucking key point -- far from being desperate, Stannis is about to unleash a master ambush.

6.  When Stannis left the wall, he left Shireen there in Jon's custody.  Thus, even if he wants to, he cannot burn her.  I REPEAT -- EVEN IF STANNIS WANTS TO BURN HER, HE PHYSICALLY CANNOT.

7.  When Stannis is stuck in the blizzard, his men ask him to burn three CANNIBALS to show his faith to the unbelievers.  He responds with his famous line, "Half of my army are unbelievers.  There will be no burnings.  PRAY HARDER."

8.  In the blizzard, some urge him to burn theon/reek, who escaped from winterfell with "arya"/sansa/who the fuck knows.  Theon is an obvious candidate, having king's blood and being guilty of terrible crimes.  Asha, theon's sister, debates and promises.  Stannis is reluctant to do it.  He appears to want to pull another Mance -- find a third way to use theon yet not piss off the northerners who want him dead.  No final decision is reached when our material ends.

9.  The whole fucking deal about being stuck in a blizzard is a ruse anyhow; we all know this mummer's farce is nearly over, and the North remembers.  Would the nigga who lived on shoe leather and glue from books for over a year give up and burn his daughter after two days in the snow?

10.  Before Stannis leaves, he tells one of his top knights:  "Go to pentos, hire an army.  At least 10,000.  You may hear that I am dead; it may even be true.  You will still bring the 10,000, and if necessary, do your duty to place Shireen on the throne."  This shows stannis plans to make it appear that he is weak, stranded, and possibly dead.  There is a lot of other evidence I won't get into.  But the bottom line is the Mannis has a plan.

11.  Some have speculated on the Shireen theory -- that Mel will burn Shireen without Stannis' knowledge or consent (possibly with moms, who is at the wall still) either to prevent the grayscale, to advance stannis, or even perhaps something with Jon.  This is of course speculation.  There is no hint stannis is aware of this.

12.  Stannis' whole persona is a strict obedience to the law.  Yet there has been one notable instance where Stannis broke his oath, broke the law, and committed the worst crime possible -- treason.  He did that for his blood, during Robert's rebellion.  Later he talks about how he loved Renly, even with his treason, and wanted to pardon him.  He clearly has a lot of loyalty to his family, even to the point of bending the law for them.  Shireen is no different -- while the world rejects her, even her own mother, he goes out of his way to show love for her, in such limited ways as he can.

Fuck the TV show.

Thanks, I feel much better about my feelings.  Ha.

I have said many times that what makes me most crazy about science fiction and fantasy is when the fictional universe has rules and the movie, or show, or novel suddenly break the rules for convenience.  The burning is just out of character, not a violation of the fundamental principles of the GOT universe, but it irritates the heck out of me, anyway.  Besides, I am a sentimental old fool, and I want a somewhat happy ending.   I just can't see it.

The first big shock, Ned's execution, made PERFECT sense in the GOT universe.

Is the Type 62 worth having? And also, are Eve stories still a thing? Finally, can you recommend any good fantasy series, that aren't GoT/Epic Fantasy?

It's not fantasy but Millennium (Lisbeth Salander, series not film) is very good.

Curious for Garbad's answer.

Sad the original season 1 Spartacus actor died. I didn't like the new guy as much.

I was SUPER sad when Andy Whittfield died. Was really impressed by him in "Gabriel" and then "Spartacus." His charisma was legit fucking good and believable. Honestly after he died, it was almost impossible for me to watch Spartacus even though I loved the first season. The 6 episode "season 2" was ok, as they didnt try to re-create Him.

But the second guy they got to play his roll was "ok" but not believable until the final episode

I thought it was, but its a straight downgrade on the WZ-131 that doesn't earn any more money, really.  I shitting out 5k wn8 in it, but I dunno if its actually worth much except as just another wedge.

I dunno if I will write eve stories.  Depends on how many people care I guess.

I don't have any recommendations, really.  I don't read a ton of fantasy.

Yeah, he felt too serious and pretentious.

After the actor from the first season died, I thought Gannicus made the show more than the new Spartacus.

Also ticked me off how the writers basically cycled through having Crixus be a fucking moron every 2 or 3 episodes. Just got rather old.

Don't forget Quintus of House Batiatus

But then they killed him off and the show went into full mediocrity imo.

Did someone want a fantasy recommendation?

Thing is, fantasy's a broad genre. What kind of stuff do you like?

I dunno, I read a lot of stuff, I've read Robin Hobb, David Eddings, Mark Lawrence, Eragon...Actually I normally don't read that much fantasy, I'm just curious if anyone's got decent book recommendations for any genre, just throw something at me. I actually got bored of GoT, to the point where I managed to read all but the last book and gave up, so Epic Fantasy isn't a great choice I think.

Stephen king's dark tower series is eipc. Brent Weeks is kinda a mash between Lawrence and Hobb, quite dark with some good emotive language. Conn Iggulden also writes well if you want historical fiction, his prose is simple but works pretty well within the narrative and topics.

Paul Hoffman has a great series, in the style of Lawrence and Weeks but even darker. Don't know if Phillip Paullman is below you, but a lot of his imagery and metaphorical idiosyncrasies are beyond the genre label.

Oh any book genre? Simon Scharma has some ridiculously good and well researched books (history). Suddendorf's "The Gap" is a really good read too, on the literall gap between humans and other primates. Just trying to name some stuff outside of the established greats as most people have read them, you know?

If you want a good book to dissect meaning from, then Birdsong is nice. I wrote an essay for school on it last year detailing Faulks idiosyncratic use of birds as a medium to establish an antithetical narrative on pre- WWI Frances budding industrialism and anthropocentricism.

I really enjoy Jim Butcher's writings.  His Codex Alera series was good.   And his Dresden Files series is just fantastic.  The first 3 or so books of the Dresden Files are decent, but they setup a lot that happens in the later books.  And it is interesting to see how his writing progresses(wrote the first book in college)

And Garbad, your advise for your 20's should be on the top of every page of this thread.  Wish I would have learned those lessons when I was 20.

I won't be too butt hurt if I don't get it, but I'll try for it, for the same reason you said. A tank you don't really need. And while it's fun to collect tanks with tourney gold, it's not a big deal if I don't get one.

I just don't like the method of how keys are obtained (unless I read it wrong). I'd rather be able to blast my way through a few days (as I have July 1 to 5 off), and get all of the keys in two to three days. Instead I'll just get twelve keys in those days.

So WG's current strategy seems all about the pokemon effect - dangle a mediocre premium and then let people scramble for it.  Am I the only one who has hit my satiation point for boring, shitty premiums?  How many do you honestly need?

I didn't even bother with the mini campaign.  I mean, the IS-5 is at least decent, but I already have an IS-3 and I don't need more premiums.

But WG has always has a twisted sense of what reasonable reward-to-effort is.  Sadly, the masses don't care and will continue to chase the (small) carrots and continue to dump money into WG's pockets.  They'll complain while they do it, but they'll still do it.

I didn't get the IS-5, either, mainly because my time zone doesn't allow me to play clams anymore, but I kind of regret it.  IS-5 seems one of the few good quality tanks in a good line.  Similar to 907 -- worth the effort.  But most premiums are just shit.  Buy a CDC or an IS-6 and don't bother with the rest.
