I tried the AW alpha. It was really buggy compared to WoT at that stage and it was hard to compare the games. How do you think they compare today when AW is closer to release?

From what I understand EA1-2 was terrible and turned off a lot of early testers.  From my perspective EA4 is polished enough for release.  I still see an occasional bug but its very much playable.  Equal or better to current WOT in quality.

I've thought that AW has a lot of potential and could definitely overtake WoT.

My biggest concern because I haven't played since EA2: Is the vision system still buggy? Getting outs potted by MBT in a light was...frustrating

aw light is not wot light.  AW lights are not intended to be scouts.  AFVs are scouts.  AW lights are intended to be flank attackers and opportunists, more like mediums in WOT.  So a typical AW light has kind of mediocre view range, often equal or worse than a MBT and pretty good camo (but not as good as TD).  The best thing about lights is basically mobile anti-MBT killers, especially by getting side shots.  The worst thing is they can get farmed by camo sniping TDs or close range AFVs.

Otherwise vision is practically identical to WOT.

To expand roles in AW, using tier 5 as an example:

MBT - M60A3 patton - similar to a heavy in wot, but much more mobile.  Its core strength is high alpha/pen + high HP/armor.  It is intended to be stronk enough to attack across the open under fire, while also being a brute in a 1v1 brawl, especially.  Its core weakness is low DPM, lowish vision/speed.

Light - BagelPanzer - similar to mediums in wot, loads HEAT spamming autoloader and missiles.  Fires accurately on the move.  Its core strength is hard countering certain tanks (lights usually counter MBTs, but this particular version sucks vs MBTs but eats AFVs alive).  Ludicrous firepower vs soft targets, extremely quick, only fair vision/camo, has little armor to speak of.

TD - LAV-300 - similar to camo tds in wot (268) core strength is camo sniping.  Features high speed, great camo, a bonus to long range fire perfectly aimed.  Also has no armor, low HP, can have trouble with agility (not easy to handle).  Firepower is insane DPM + best in tier penetration (which is unusual, most TDs have heavy firepower but lowish pen).  Best at support camo sniping, but anything can posterize it 1v1.  Can struggle to defeat MBTs head on, but sometimes can.

AFV - Fox - similar to t8 lights in wot.  Tiny, jeep sized go cart with AC and missiles.  The missiles can theoretically kill a MBT, but in reality its pretty sketchy last resort as many MBTs have countermeasures.  AC can do catastrophic damage in bursts, but is very inaccurate at long range and has high exposure time, similar to tier 2 ac in wot.  Murders TDs/Lights it surprise attacks at close range.  Stupidly fast, good view range, fair camo.  Plays like a scout but also a scout that doesn't just hunt arty, it also hunts TDs and mediums (but avoids heavies).

So the core is the MBT.  MBTs mass and push an area, especially urban areas.  Lights flank attack them and encircle them.  TDs play defense and snipe and stall.  AFVs scout and eliminate other softies.  In general all tanks are a lot faster and a lot more firepower.  In general MBTs are much tougher frontally than in WOT, with some tanks nearly impossible to pen by in tier opponents frontally.  Also HEAT always does moer damage but often doesn't work against lights/mbts but always will against tds and afvs.

Played EA1 and promptly uninstalled. Now Garbad makes me want to try it again. 

May wait until EA5 as this window is about to close.  

Think there will be an EA5? Or is it really that close to closed/open Beta.

I don't know for sure, but I think it has to be getting close.  A fansite said open beta in Sept.  EA4 is currently running as is PTS.  I play on EA4.

However, you need a guest key or prepurchase for EA4.

Eh, I enjoy the history of ww2 stuff but the fact is modern tanks are a lot more fun.  They are faster, more dynamic, less complete turds, less spread between tiers...and just more capable.  When I play wot now it feels like I am playing against the RNG, not my opponents.  Fully aimed shots missing wtf.  Retarded gold spam wut.  Stupid amounts of chance on penetration/rolls/etc.  Corridor shitmaps gtfo.

And to me its telling how WG has reacted the last year.  Their strategy to 2015 is obviously "release an asston of premiums and pray people grind."  They aren't fixing shit.  They don't know how.  And they have run out of ideas, and goodwill.

8.  The Martian looks great, I ordered the buk to read ASAP.

The book is a really fun read so I hope you'll enjoy it. I think I finished it in 2-3 days. I have high hopes for the movie since it's being directed by Scott and the cast looks solid. If you haven't already, hold off on watching the trailers before you finish the book since they're somewhat spoilery. The Ares Live video teasers that they've shown are pretty cool though.

I looked - apologies if I missed it, but as one of the more (in?)famous "remove arty from the game" types, how do you find AW's implementation of it. Especially with the spotting and smoke rounds.

Still cancerous.  Smoke rounds are good and worthwhile, illumination rounds are extremely cancerous. 

+ doesn't oneshot

+ less module rape

+ low dpm, team dependent, heavily unfun so not often played

- still basically can't be dodged by MBTs, even with warning

- self spotting and then dropping shots on the area is retarded

- and most importantly, it still has the same negative effects on gameplay -- because you can click without risk, people are forced to hump walls

 

Despte all that, its less bad than WOT but still bad.  Its main redeeming feature is that literally everyone agrees its shit and so voluntarily never uses it.
