Losing streaks in Platoons

Recommended Posts

I play on the SEA server. My friends and clanmates always ask me to platoon, but as soon as I do, we start losing like mad, like almost every game we play. It's not as if we played badly...We regularly do over 2000 damage each (We're all better than average players), but it just feels as if our team sees us, and think that they can yolo and/or die like pancakes. How should we deal with this situation? Several of my friends (and me) now suffer from platoon-phobia. If you can win consistently in a platoon, plz tell me how, as some of the people that I regularly platoon with have 55% win rates and 2000+ WN8s without a platoon. Here is an example of the teams our platoons have been having...

There was one game on Monastery when I had to do 5700+ damage to barely win, but I died (by an unlucky high roll by waffle) and we only won because of a Conqueror on -100 health who spotted a T-54 long enough for artillery to take him out. Had the T-54 killed the Conqueror, we would have lost because the only other player left on our team was our artillery. Just goes to show how close that game was. We only managed to push one flank because I wasn't afraid of taking damage, we were in a 6 v 4, so I tried to use around 1000 health on my Centurion 7/1 to try and motivate the donkeys. Fortunately, it worked and they managed to push through the flank only to get mowed down by a ISU-152 camping in enemy base.My other two platoon mates both did around 2500 damage, but half of our team did no or less than 100 damage.

Unfortunately, our platoon couldn't carry like that every time, so... we lost. Game after game.

Can some purple poaster plz help me? Is platoon play any different from normal gameplay? Our platoon usually goes the same flank, uses our dpm on same target, and preserve our health. Are we doing something wrong in doing so? If so, can some purple poaster plz halp? (Or maybe the solution is not playing in a platoon :3 but its lonely.. :P)

Some replays would help, maybe.

Ok, I'll be sure to send some in when I have material. I usually turn replay recording off because of low frame rates since 9.0.

Extra note: The losing started as soon as I started power grinding the Centurion 7/1.

(tier 10 game noobs? They're common on SEA server, people in IS-7s with 46% win rates...)

I hear that platoon mm is slightly higher in weight, meaning you'll be more likely to get into higher tier games? No idea if that's true but it would certainly make things more difficult.

Recently I've devoted myself to playing my E50M and if anything, my WR is actually going up. I used to run tens willy nilly and found, like you, WR seemed to just go down and it seemed no matter what you do you cannot carry some teams. This is true to an extent, I've had games where the toon is last alive and we're all sitting on 3k+, with maybe two to five max enemies, whereas our team is all dead with 1 shot of damage to their names. Winning these games is the next step for my ability.

But for you, I would recommend sticking with one vehicle when you platoon and ensure you go to the same place and are hyper-aware of your position. If you do pref 8s you will constantly need to carry so will constantly need to be able to individually exceed your chosen vehicle (hence playing the same one - practice makes perfect) and exceed in vision, map & situational awareness control with relation to your toon.

For example, running an IS6 toon. You are GOING to have to do the heavy lifting.

Toon of mediums on a map with a well known 'brawl zone' you will NEED to take that other flank etc

Tldr imagine it's just you 3 versus 15. This should make you cautious in your play.

Edit: assuming you're playing to win here, if you are tooning with current grind vehicles that are newish, or not fully upgraded; you should expect to not perform at 100% capacity. If I grind I make sure the toon is ok first, and if I want to win I make sure the toon is bringing carry tanks. This helps WR alot.

Does Centurion 7/1 platooned up with an E75 and an E50 count as carry tanks?

Though we lost 5 games straight that night...Admittedly, they were tier 10 games... :3

I have a similar experience, but I know why I failed... A different perspective.

In my previous clan, and currently in KITTY, I have one friend I could platoon with for hours. We had the same state of mind, the same ideas. As we were always on TS, people joined our channel and ask for the last spot. Their skill level was from wet behind the ears to close to garbad level... But that doesnt really matter. We pretty much started playing bad, because me and my friend get so annoyed by the third person... Talks too much, whines too much, rages too much... It just completely destroyed the atmosphere and we would lose like 5-10 games in a row despite not playing awful. As soon as that 3rd person left, or we faked a break to come back 15min later to continue with just the two of us, every thing was fine again...  It pretty much means I prefer playing solo than play with guys I talk with about tanks.

TLDR; Find people with the same state of mind and ideas about the game, enjoy their company, play better.

E75 & E50 definitely categorise as carry tanks. 7/1 I wouldn't bring but is a good tank overall.

You should be able to comfortably carry with that setup.

It could be that even if you have different winrates you are comfortable with different play styles -- and by forcing a wolfpack people are getting caught by flanking shots / terrain nuances they aren't prepared for.

Also I've seen suggested elsewhere to have 2 people on one flank w/ the other person solo to try and anchor the weak flank to prevent it being overrun.

I don't think enough can be stated about the correct 'toon grouping, some trios/pairs just work, some don't. Don't be shy about walking away after 3-5 losses in a row.

I agree. Some people just don't play like you do. It is state of minds. It's like he has pretty much same stats but it just doesn't cut it.

My example:

Clan mate with blue stats - I can't play straight with him around, like I rely too much on him or something.

Buddy with yellow stats - we work as charm, he just says I'll follow you, you just notify me when you decide to make a move.
