I bought back the NC since it's on discount but now I'm broke, doing these reviews ended up using a good chunk of my silver reserve. I used to run around 25-30 million silver but I'm at less than 600k, I can't even fully upgrade her again for a while lol, I can't remember when the last time I was broke in this game

Well the Russian camo mission is done now, time to get back to the grind.

Almost done the Nagato, I rage sold it a year or so ago but came back to it and found it very nice.

The Aoba is coming along nicely, I'm starting to get a good feel for her especially now that I have Concealment Expert on her

I'm finding the Orion to be boring and I'm probably going to stop at the Queen Elizabeth or maybe the KGV and use nothing but AP to prove its viable (because I run nothing but AP in my Dunkerque and Scharnhorst and I'm well above average in those ships).

I stalled out on the New Orleans, its a fun ship but very situational, I sold the Mahan also because it just doesn't work for me

Bismark is coming along nicely but I have to say the NC is a better T8, she just handles being in T10 matches so much better and both are very bad bully's when top tier

I think I might tackle French cruisers next or maybe Russian, I dunno. I just know T8 seems to be my point where I don't feel the need to progress.

Don't quit on the Mahan because the Benson on up are good.  I rather enjoy the French CA's and I have the ties 9 with the extended speed boost timer mod which works well with them.

Don't quit on the Mahan. Especially if you haven't unlocked the second set of torpedoes. The upgraded torpedoes turn it into a completely different boat. If you have and still struggle with it, I dunno what to say as it plays similarly to the Farragut.

The Mahan has been ... fine. I kept switching between AA/guns before finally just settling on guns. It doesn't feel like a powerful knife-fighter, despite obviously being the best in tier at doing that. But it's torpedos work, which makes the ship a well-rounded package that has an answer to most problems it faces.

I'll grant I don't think I've ever felt like I hard carried a game in the ship, but I feel like I've done fine in it, and with 5000xp to go to the Benson, it certainly isn't in the "hate" category (I'm looking at you T-22).

For the more experienced heads: IFHE on US DDs?

Not worth it. The kinds of things you shatter on now you still won't pen reliably and you're giving up fire chance which is already pretty low on US DDs.

Well, it's be best to look at what you can now pen (28mm v21-22mm base), and decide whether it's worth it. Maybe do some training rooms to see. At this point, the 1% fire chance is pretty well negligible, it's more if you want to be able to use those 4 points for other things. Since it isn't for comp, I think, it's down to personal preference.

Flamu had a good video on IFHE - it turns out you want a gun caliber between ~150 and 195mm to make it worthwhile. Anything under 150mm won't penetrate 32mm with IFHE, and anything over 195mm will pen 32mm decks anyways but never get to 50mm, which is the next common armor group. If you are low to mid tier, you want to be able to pen 25mm, so guns under 155mm will need it unless you are below 120mm, where you are basically shit out of luck. 

Some cruisers have even thinner armor that that - check what you usually run into. I think the armor groups are less homogeneous below tier 5 or 6, so you can run into anything. I would probably pick something else unless I need it to pen BB decks and Cruiser plating, as you want to damage both during torpedo cooldowns or when smoke-spamming. 

 

I have only made it to the Clemson (which has 102mm) - IFHE is useless on that except for the few 19mm plates floating around, but since you are more worried about other DDs when gunboating you are better off with other skills. I think most US DDs are at or under 120mm the whole way up, so IFHE is not likely to help much. Get concealment expert then either AA, Torp or Gunnery skills depending on your chosen build.

This.  I absolutely hated the Mahan.  The Benson is a noticeable upgrade, the Fletcher even more so over her.  The Gearing on the other hand is meh.  Not bad, but she turns like a Russian cruiser....

I would go so far and say that I will always rather play a Fletcher, even as the only tier IX...

After the Clemson USN gunboatery is a meme. You need to be either close the target (which is often suicide given radar) or shoot BBs. Either way yields low/easy healable damage.

And then comes cap contesting - oooooh, USN gunbootes so gud. Lol. If you meet that Shima in cap you will gun him down, sure, but it will still take a long time if he simply turns and runs away. You will loose a good chunk of health in between. And thats only the "ideal" 1vs1 situation. IRL all enemy ships will open up on you, phat cahnce that most of them are BBs and while that SHima eats nothing but overpen, Gearings phat ass gets raped by the first Monatan shell for good.

So what about torps? Well, up to the Benson, torps are simply bad as a main damage weapon being short range. Benson torps have decent range but only 55 knots - lel. Gearing oth has lowish damage on a glacial reload for a unneeded 16km range.

Fletcher has insane fantasy torps that can only be described as the best in the game by a large margin - gg WG, gud balancing.

I know a lot of people bitch about the Khaba however you can  make a strong argument that the Fletcher is the best DD in the game; great concealment, great ship handling, fast torpedo reload. It's a great all-rounder that can do work on any map in any game mode.

Taking a break it seems, the Russian battleship mission has taken it out of me again because I haven't had much reason to play. I have all the ships I want, none of the other lines make me crave them. The new USN Cruiser line split looks interesting and I think I might dab in that

GUD BUFF

first and only good secondaries on USN BB's,

I was only running aft + flag, no manual secondaries 6.8km range, 6.6sec reload, 6% fire chance. I would say they are as accurate or more then tirpitz/bismarck secondaries.

So I started a new account for shits and giggles and boy I feel sorry for anyone new to the game, there is allot to take in quickly. The videos they provide don't really provide that clear of information like setting up modules or captain skills, they really need to set up a set of missions explaining the importance of ammo choice and leading also. That said I'm curb stomping noobs left and right, even managed a 50k damage game in the Chester and the St. Luise is a completely over powered ship. It won't be much longer once I'm out of the special protected MM, I think level 11 is the cut off

So i got the Montana today with some free exp that i have been collecting since about 2 months....

HOLY shit what a shit ship... how is this a tier X, feels more like 9.5. I strait up prefer the Missouri in tier X MM then that fat slob, the Missouri is just better and much more useful with its radar.

Your concealment is worse, handling is is worse then Yamato, armor is shit, turret angle are shit, you hardly get any AA buffs from going 9 - 10 (slightly increase in DPS and range, big fucking woop). All that for 33% more guns, but in order to use them you have to give alot of broadside. Hell, I would probably rather be in an NC with tier X MM. To think this thing had a raised citadel, my god, by far the worse tier X BB, even the Monquere is better, if just as shit to play.

Yamato and Grosser just walk all over the Montana, it isnt even close.
