  1. 1. When will you upgrade to W10?

    • ASAP, no need to wait, I trust MS.

    • I will wait some time with the upgrade after first few monthly bug fixes are rolled out and 3rd party application compatibility fixes solved.

  2. 2. Will you upgrade or clean install?

With W10 being released end of this month and almost unanimous opinion of testers and reviewers that it is a lot better compared to previous versions when will you upgrade?

I went [DOS - Win 3.1 - Win 95 - Win 98] XP -> Win7 never bothering with millennium crap or 8 schizophrenic layout. Always with waiting some time before the biggest bugs and compatibility issues were sorted out.  But this time feedback seems very positive overall so thinking to just go from day one.

Is there anything you expect gaming-vise from the upgrade?

Win7 is still working fine for me, I'll use it on my desktop until my drive dies and I'm forced to clean install everything again.

I have mixed feeling about this, i like Win7 and i have it for while, also Win10 is nice (finally) but i don't like hassle of CLEAN instal. Also i don't trust MS about upgrades, i'll most def clone SSD and try upgrade. If everything went ok i'll stick with 10, if not get back 7 from backup.

have had the option to upgrade for a while from win 8.1. Will i still be able to upgrade for free once it is released? If not, then i might upgrade now.

I believe you can upgrade anytime within a year of release for free, and after that it will cost 119$ and up

The hate at Windows 8 still amazes me beyond belief. If you're too lazy to spend literally less than 5 minutes downloading classic shell, then that's your fault. Beyond the stupid start menu, it uses less background processing power, and has less compatibility issues than 7. Of course, I too could go find a launch review of 8 to cling to and call it garbage, but I was born with a brain.

10 will be even better. Why? Because MS can't afford for it not to be, plain and simple. There's no reason to think otherwise. Couple that with the tech preview reviews, and I don't really see how there's even a discussion to be had.

So, as a complete computer moron barely able to install shit I need on my PC, if I take Microsoft up on their offer and update my Windows 8 to 10 it will wipe the hard disc, forcing me to re-install everything?

I'm sure you can always just hit upgrade to windows 10 and you'll keep your files if you insist. If I were you I'd get a cheap second hard disk and put all important files on it and then install windows 10.

Not unless you specifically tell it to.

Thanks for that. I have some discs for my stuff but I'm not sure I can be bothered reinstalling all the shit I need any time soon, but I can see that I would want to later. Will wait a bit.

Any copy will work.

Any copy will work.

Yup. They're trying to win back some of the people that pirated older versions, so even pirated copies get the upgrade free.

While W10 has upgraded performance compared to windows 7 I am going to maximize my windows 7 life and not upgrade until that 1 year deal is almost up. Then I get to let Microsoft fix their buggy, screwed up released version before obtaining it. :D

I will upgrade as soon as icon packs are available for win 10. The horrendous icons are the only gripe I have with it.

But until then sticking to 8.1. Still windows best OS no matter what anyone says.

...there's a reason a free tech preview was available for literally everyone for months before release. It will be fine on launch. Fine to the point that drivers for both AMD and Nvidia are already out for it and have been for months. And since the upgrade is free, you're literally just wasting time with a worse OS by not upgrading, not "sticking it to the man".

I'll try it on my laptop first, because it's a nice simple OEM system with one disk and no messy setup (on my desktop I have my users folder mapped to a spinny disk).

Desktop can wait a while, I like 7. Media box I won't update, because W10 is killing WMC.

Since I want to build a new PC in summer and I get Windows for free anyway I'll definitely get myself Win10

Even with the preview there will be issues upon launch. That is the same with almost all software. The free upgrade is there for a year, so why not use a solid os that has no holes or issues until a version of wn10 comes out that stable enough to support my needs and uses. I am not sticking anything "to the man" just merely waiting for a stable and tweaked os that can effectively be the improvement over my existing os.

go, go, go guys

I need more beta testers, so that I can maybe switch in half a year - hate buggy OS

It's not going to be buggy... Theres a reason Microsoft has a tech preview for the prior months, so that *everyone* and their mother can check out the OS and report problems.
