How nicknames relate to player performance

Notable observations:

  • On average, players with names starting with uppercase letters will perform better than players with names starting with lowercase letters. The only exception is the lowercase ex.
  • The best players seem to be born between 1989 and 1997.
  • Names with the years 2005-2012 seem to get better since those years are unlikely to be linked to the year they were born.
  • I would speculate that players with the years 2013-2015 in their names are worse because those years are probably the years that they signed up to WoT, giving them less time to gain experience over the players that signed up between 2010 and 2012. I somewhat doubt this conclusion, but it's the only one that makes sense to me. (Edit: The OP of the Reddit thread backs up my conclusion: "When you register, if the nickname you choose is already taken, the game offers you alternatives, one of them is the same nick with current year appended. And there were a lot of registrations when game opened in 2010 to much appraise.")
  • Names starting with an underscore have the second highest WN8 on average. Not entirely unexpected.
  • No idea why the letter J is so high, or why the letter V is so low. Something to do with the Russian server maybe???
  • Players with only 2 letters in their names are on average the best players on the server. Some of this may be small sample size, but it's not exactly surprising since players with 2 letters in their names will have signed up long before most other players, giving them more experience.

I'm not sure what server(s) this data is polled from, but it's possible that it only comes from the Russian server. The data is from all of the servers.

Looks like I'm gonna do well when you also add that I was born in 86, one of the better years :disco:

ANYONE with 'Sly', 'Rommel', 'DesertFox', 'Guderian' is 100% tomato.

Ehhh, you would generally expect someone with my name to be terrible, but that isn't entirely the case. Anyone remember when OTTER had like half the clan rename to include _xXx_ bookmarks?

TFW "R" is low due to Rommel :(

Funny stats, lol. Nothing atypical; people in their prime are great, old people are shit, young people are mediocre. Still hilarious, though XD

TFW young = mediocre :(

There are exceptions to every most cases, just not many.

The OP of the Reddit thread told me that the majority of 2-character names are on the Korean server. I'm not sure how exactly that affects the average wn8 of 2-character names, but I'm sure it does in some way or another.

It's still probable that 2-character names were snatched up earlier, even on the Korean server, giving the players with 2-character names more time to become experience players.

It's not actually an age thing as such, it's more that the very young often don't understand the mechanics well, the late teens to mid-20s have way too much time on their hands (usually only some school work and if they have jobs, there is no wife/kids to take care of) and it basically just shows that as you grow older and get more responsibilities at work/home, there is less time for try-harding tanks for 2+ hours every day. Imagine having to come home from work at 5 pm, have dinner with the family, put the kid to bed by 7:30 pm and then spend some time with the wife afterwards: How much time for tanking will there be left if you have to get up at 7 am? Are you sure you even want to play tanks that much rather than relaxing? I can certainly imagine how it may just become a weekend thing or a few casual battles on some nights.

Why the fuck is "v" so bad, what?

Because you're grouped with people like Veitilein :gaben:

This explains why I started playing better when I renamed myself to Masterpupil from masterpupil2. Fucking knew it.

Also, how do 5 year-olds play better than 10 year-olds?

That's actually in the OP: WoT is 5 years old on our end (I believe beta access was in 2010), so rather than your birthday the closest names are more likely associated with account creation in either WoT or some other game, whereas once we start going back to something like 2000, it's someone who's 15 today.

I'm guessing anything from 2007 to 2012 are a mixture of the previously mentioned naming suggestions from Wargaming and high school or college graduating classes of players born in the late 80s-90s.  Basically it's the same age group as the other peak, just represented by different numbers.
