M48A1 Patton III questions and recommendations....

Recommended Posts

I'd be a fool to say I disagreed with any of these things.  But, like any tank in the game, a good player can make it work.

For example, there's no other tier ten medium i'd rather have (apart from maybe the FV4202) working the hill on Serene Coast - far enough away to stay somewhat safe, able to abuse its view range and depression (something not many other tier ten meds have), and snipey enough.

While it's true that a good player can make it work, a good player can make better tanks work even better.

Most tanks that great players excel in (from what I've seen in replays) are tanks that have features that those players can get a lot of mileage out of. They are often termed "soft stats". Gun depression, view range, low on-the-move dispersion, camouflage, etc... The Patton has those things, but when you look at how these characteristics interact with some of its weaknesses, it is hard to make work.

So you have the best view range in the game. Great. But your camouflage coefficient is so bad that tanks with poorer view range and better camouflage will spot you before you can spot them.

So you have great gun depression. Awesome. But your height and the enormous tumor on the top of your turret means you are still vulnerable to enemy shots before your gun can clear a ridge line.

The problem with this tank is that its weaknesses not only outweigh its strengths, its weaknesses actually NEGATE its strengths (almost on a one-for-one basis).

Robert

I missed playing the M48A1 when it was better.  I played it a bunch wasted this weekend and ended up with a 65% WR with a fairly aggressive playstyle on hilly maps with Optics, VStab and a Rammer in mixed play.  I played it mostly with snap shots if I knew I was being watched, changed locations on my ridge as possible and did alright.  As long as I stayed hull down and shifted position.  It felt like a more durable if not more sluggish Leo since you actually had a chance to bounce a shell here and there.

I just wish the damn thing was not so large.  I can't help to think if its size were a bit smaller, like the size of most of the other tier X mediums, it may be a bit more competitive.  Can't agree more about the tumor and size Robert.

Been thinking of switching away optics since my crew has reached the point where I'm over 450m view range without coated. A boost in all stats might be more noticable! Then again, removing 10% camo from enemy tanks might be more useful than the 2.2% boost from vents.

Yup this is my question too. With such great view range, aren't vents more helpful? Same applies to M46 Patton, it has 410 which is great too, why wouldn't I put vents to improve other characteristics? Is camo negating impact that huge? Sort of can't decide. So boosting strong ability a bit or just improve everything other a bit?

You need the optics to offset the M48's poor camo, otherwise an Obj 140 will see you before you see them.

Optics + viewrange skills + bia + cola = x-ray vision

Keep your optics!

I'm retraining my ancient M48 crew (it's a mess right now)
This is what I'm retraining to:

Commander: 6th Sense, Repair, Recon (60%)
Gunner: Designated, Deadeye, Snap Shot (60%)
Driver: Repairs, Clutch Braking, Off-Road (60%)
Loader: Situational, Safe Stowage, Repair (60%)

Equipment: Optics, Rammer, Vertical; Repairs. Medkit, Food

And this is why:

I know I can't outspot other scouts, so I'm not bothering with camo right now. My goal is to make a setup that will enable me to spot every heavy tank at max range, and Bats/Mediums as soon as they fire their guns.

I'm taking Snapshot and dumping Smooth Ride because M48 has more issues with bloom when rotating turret. Vehicle traverse and movement bloom is low enough to make Smooth Ride not really useful, no?

All suggestions are most welcomed! Seals of approval too.  :verysmug:

I feel this is a pretty nice setup for the M48 and M60 Pattons, can't really think of anything I would trade for something else.
Edit: I should probably move camo to the last for loader and get stowage instead of stupid firefighting.

Wow. You have 2500 games in Fattons. :D

I'm guessing you too dumped FE and went with food+preventative? How often did you really burn?

I very rarely burn in my Pattons.

Use rations on all my tier 10 tanks, if they don't burn, I trade away FE, if they burn, then I train jack of all trades.

I'm running this:

Planning on reskilling gunner once he finishes repairs to get deadeye, then start repair on him again. Gonna retrain driver for smooth and start repairs on him again aswell.

By the way - You're not alone in loving your M48. I'm starting to get really comfy in this tank, just hit my 400 games mark. My first T10, so still shitty stats, but constantly improving. Pulling about 3.5k at the moment which feels so sweet, now I'm just waiting for my average DPG to climb there...

I currently have the M46 and I love it even if i have bad stats in it for the moment ...

Need only 50k xp to unlock M48 but ...

By reading your posts we can think that M48 is a bad tierX.

So M46 is a keeper and M48 a bad Tank ?

You may enjoy it, despite its mediocrity. It lacks some of the things that make the M26 and M46 so much fun. Also, don't expect it to be used in serious competitive format.

I still have one because I never sell tier 10s, but I haven't driven it in quite some while.

I've driven it recently for 5 games in a row, won every single one of them dealing 3.2k damage on average.

I still find the view range + gun control to be epic. The rest of the tank is just decent.

All in all the Fatton is a solid tank. If it was not for the ridiculously OP TDs, this would be only of the great pubbie battle tier Xs, IMO. Able to flex on most maps in most situations.

Also, bring HE shells. I spam them fairly often (vs waffles and snap shots at hull down, high armor targets).

I finally got my M48.  I free xp'ed the top gun...that pissed me off on a tier X that I just paid 6 million credits for

Just played a few games before I had to head to work.  Mobility is great, gun is epic, everything is smooth...I just wish it wasn't so damn gigantic.  Holy crap, so big.

I ran VStab, Vent and Optics but after re-reading this thread I will swap Vents for a Rammer.  I did not have fire control issues, really its point and click, can't look it up right now but shell speed seemed great.  In fact, the gun might be the best gun I've ever used, feels a lot like the Cent 7/1 gun.

I think I will enjoy it...at least until I get the Object 140, but that will be long time.

What is the general consensus of camo vs repair priority on this tank on crew skills?

OK, I'm playing this tank on test server... What is wrong with it?

  • Low speed(still faster than FV4202)
  • Agile as shit, turns on a dime
  • Gun kicks ass(seriously, RoF is lacking a bit but everything else...)
  • Gun depression but turret is meh at best
  • Lacks camo but has great view range

I don't see a reason to drive FV4202 over this. Maybe it just suits me...?

Arguable point in my book... Very nasty shells as premium rounds...

good against 50b's and WT's, horrendously unreliable against everything else. Also, I run Vents, rammer, optics, and food on my Patton. Only 105mm with a faster RoF is the STB, and the patton actually hits things, which makes it's on target DPM better than the STB, in my experience. Also, sidescraping is OP as shit in the Patton, since there is literally no hull above the tracks, only turret. Angle it right, and those thick tracks will eat everything. It's camo is pretty bad, but anything that can spot it, it can spot right back. It's not so useful for CW's or abso's, since specialist tanks are better at certain things, but i think it and the 50M are the best all-rounder meds for pubs. The FV just kinda....sucks.

Also, Joyful, +1 for 3 markes, almost there myself....and another +1 for Captain Morgan.
