Should I bother relearning to play Arty

  1. 1. Should I bother relearning Arty?

    • Yes, it's a lot of fun getting pwned
    • Wtf are you thinking, sell that shit.
    • Keep'e in your garage for when WG caves to the "OMG You nerfed my Arty!" party
    • Russian Tanks are OP

So - I have a German artillery crew (was on a Hummel, just moved it to a GW Panther which I had bought on sale pre 8.6) and an S-51 for sh*ts and giggles. I was honestly never very good at arty but it was fun to one-shot things and listen to the rage.

I've played maybe 12 games in my arty since the new patch, and I hate it. But maybe I'm not giving it enough time, and also only have high tier arty right now so the learning curve is (might be) quite steep.

I can sell all my arty at a decent profit (bought them all before they were up-tiered in 8.6) free up some garage spots and also at least 1 really good crew, or I can put in the pain to try and relearn how to play arty, either by buying a something lower tier in the German tree  or maybe starting the brits / french.

Thoughts and Opinions?

IMO, at least keep it. Doesn't justify for the efforts you invested in to get those arty. Besides, those arty are still effective on the battlefield. You just need some "skills" to make them work.

Worth a lot more in its weight in credits than as a serviceable tank. Sell all non-British arty but top tiers and that tier 5 French one that's still unbalanced and buy them back if arty ever gets changed.

I wrestle with this same question. I have a T92 that I worked my ass off to earn, but have not played in probably 6 months. Some attempts to play it on the test server let me know that it would be a severe lesson in patience and frustration. I'm seriously considering taking the crew and retraining them for the auto loader line.

I wanted to grind to the GW Type E, but stopped at the GW Panther. After 8.6, i realized how boring it was to sit around for 30 seconds and be able to do nothing for your team. I sold it, and retrained the crew for my Leopard PTA.

I sold mine. Not because I think it sucks now, but its just incredibly boring now. Waiting 30 seconds in between shots with the worst inaccuracies, no thank you.

Sold my S-51 two weeks after 8.6 rolled out. The nerf to firing rate and aiming time is not that bad, but the gun traverse and aim circle disperson made it unplayable.

I am working my way up the british arty line and it does have the feel of pre-8.6 soviet spgs.

I have my Hummel just chilling in my garage 'cos it's one of my favorite SPGs irl. Managed to snag it from the Panzer III/IV before WG removed that option. Haven't touched it at all since 8.6. I just have it there since it looks cool.

Not sure if you'd have the same attachment to your arty/arties though.

I think the S-51 is going to go. Might put the crew back on the KV-2, or work the soviet medium line.

I've actually never played an arty 'line'. I crossed over to the Wespe from the German light tree, then earned the Hummel from the pz3/4 tree like you did. Went to the S-51 from the KV-2 coz I thought hitting something with the 203mm gun would be fun, but wasn't able to unlock the 203mm prior to -8.6, and don't relish earning the ~20,000 XP I need to get in the current patches. So the GW Panther is only arty I've unlocked and bought from a previous arty.

The Hummel is a kewl looking tank, I admit. I also really liked its maneuverability, esp with grousers and clutch-braking.

Talk to ImpectRev[-M-A-]. He is terrible@tanks.... but holy crap I ALWAYS want him as my arty. I've watched him one shot foch155s on the move often enough to know its not a fluke. Dude just understand where the bad guys are going to drive and how to hit them.

Im actually playing more arty now than before. Now your usually the only arty in the game and if your not the top tierer you can get decent dmg and creds.

Before I played maybe 1-4 games a week with arty, now I play it daily. Tankers have forgot how to hide from arty and theres nobody stealing your targets.

I still dont bother with lowtier arties, I play just my higher tier artys, but I find them quite nice ( attleast with prem shells.).

See, I just can't get the hang of it. By the time I've zeroed in, the target has moved or gone. And I'm finding a lot less 'safe' parking zones, so I'm having to relocate way more often. I had one hilarious battle on Ensk Encounter where I ended up in the enemy spawn point firing at my starting spawn point I moved around so much. And I had to drive through the city to get there.

Someone on these forums said "even if you don't like arty, you should play 600 games at tier 6 and above to understand how they think" prior to the nerfs.  Since I was farther on the German line, I started going for the GW Panther.  This is now a tier 7, so I could still go for that one if that advice is still relevant.  Is this still a good idea?

Thanks for the help guys, I sold the S-51 coz the crew is shit. Haven't decided what to do with the GW Panther yet... but I have 3 garage slots open now so I can afford to wait a bit. Maybe I'll buy back the Wespe, last time I played it still drew tier 7 opponents...

Cheers,

-j.

Hello all,

Appears we can ask arty questions and not get raged at?

I have two, Grille and Hummel. Have them set up with Rammer, Suspension and Camo net. Is this decent?

Would dumping the Suspension for a Vstab or GLD be recommended to help the aim time?

Thanks M

I sold all of my arty save the French premium after 8.6.  I bought the premium Sexton and researched the first two British SPGs with the idea of trying the line out.  I have the tier 6s of the French, American, Russian and German lines researched and I keep the crews set aside for the day I decide to re-try arty.

I would not sell your arty, though.  I'm not an arty specialist, so I had no trouble selling all of my low tier arty that I mostly used for company battles anyway.  If you spent a lot of time and effort grinding to high tier arty, I would focus on improving your gameplay.  Skilled SPG drivers are extremely important in high tier battles with the rise in high tier TD use.

I'll hang onto the GW Panther, but I'm going to have to down-tier to get the hang of things again. It won't be on my priority list for awhile.

Which I think is precisely why you want me driving something different :-) I was just on the edge of competence pre-nerf, now I fall well below that.

Probably best to start your own thread, but here's a quick response:

1) Rammer is critical, put it on every tank you own (except auto-loaders and other rare cases)

2) Suspension only gives you increased weight allowance and more hp to the track modules - no reason to put on arty unless you have the top gun researched and can't mount it. Use GLD instead.

3) GLD is critical. See #2.

4) Camo net is good. Very good. But if you have 100% camo skill on your crew in the hummel, you could experiment with grousers on that tank (someone will yell at me about this). The hummel has excellent acceleration and is a very big SPG, and sometimes it's more helpful to be able to relocate quickly then stay hidden. The grousers will also help with your hull rotation, which is also nice.

5) V-stab - this is for tanks with turrets. You don't have a turret.

Cheers,

-j.

I have Obj.261 and I was wondering is it worth grinding new SPGs if they stay in the current form? And what SPG would be the best to grind to complement my Obj? T92? GWE?

I would. Arty in its current form is still satisfying to play, especially if you already have experience. As for which branch, I would suggest either the german or brit arties.
