yoyoya2 528 Share Posted August 1, 2016 Hey guys, I got a laptop over a month ago and I noticed that my fps in games was lower then it should be. After looking in MSI afterburner and GPU-Z I noticed that my gpu does not have a clock speed higher than 400 and a memory speed higher than 900. This GPU is supposed to have a 925 clock and 1000 for the memory. My laptop is a Lenovo Y40-80, specs are : CPU: Intel core i7 4510 (hyperthreaded dual core) Clocked at 2ghz stock and 3.1ghz turbo GPU: AMD r9 m275x 2gb gddr3 clocked at 925/1000 ( it is just below a gtx860m and higher then the 950m) It is a desktop 7770 slightly downclocked 8gb gddr3 1600 500GB SSHD All power settings are set to the highest performance and the temperatures are around 50-60 degrees under load. It is not a CPU bottleneck as i have tried throttlestop and it did nothing. I have uninstalled and reinstalled all drivers and it again did nothing I tried to force voltage and it did nothing
KenadianCSJ 666 Share Posted August 1, 2016 Are the temps you're referring to CPU or GPU? Stupid question, but still.

CPU is around 60 and GPU goes up to 70 when under load And Yes I am always plugged in. Its on a power bar if that does something ????? I use a external screen but I am keeping my laptop screen open as apparently if I close it it throttles. @Folterknecht
Folterknecht 2,257 Share Posted August 1, 2016 Deinstall the AMD GPU driver with DDU in windows safe mode, after that install the latest driver
yoyoya2 528 Author Share Posted August 1, 2016 1 hour ago, Folterknecht said: Deinstall the AMD GPU driver with DDU in windows safe mode, after that install the latest driver That did nothing. I then decided to run a stress test and I noticed that the first second the clocks went up to normal 3d speeds (925/1000) But dropped down to 400/900 immediately while the temperature went from 60 to 100 in less then a second and stayed there until going back down to
Folterknecht 2,257 Share Posted August 1, 2016 Use the Afterburner OSD to see clocks and temps ingame. That your laptop can't handle Furmark isn't suprising.

Folterknecht 2,257 Share Posted August 1, 2016 Dou you have your laptop currently connected to the TV/external TFT? If yes -> disconnect and test again ....
KenadianCSJ 666 Share Posted August 1, 2016 This sounds exactly like it's thermal throttling. Clean out the fan(s) and replace the thermal paste if you need to.
yoyoya2 528 Author Share Posted August 1, 2016 23 minutes ago, Folterknecht said: Dou you have your laptop currently connected to the TV/external TFT? If yes -> disconnect and test again .... About 15min of ARMA III. I am guessing it is probably thermal throttling yet the fans are never speeding up.
Folterknecht 2,257 Share Posted August 1, 2016 test with different games uninstall Afterburner (incl. RivaTuner Statserver) -> restart and try again (use GPU-z in the background for logging) Didn't help? Go unstall the driver again with DDU in safe mode and reinstall - don't install Afterburner again
Kitten 1,388 Share Posted August 1, 2016 You should also probably be setting your fans to 100% manually. May help with the thermal throttling and allow you to check if the problem is something else. canadiantrex

Folterknecht 2,257 Share Posted August 1, 2016 And what did you (not) do there? *sigh there is a reason that every benchmark lists the application and test conditions Use that AMD driver suite to define a custom fan curve. Starting out at 20% for 20°C and 100% at 90°C ... finetune it in relation to temps and noise, we can't do that from here. Obviously the only thing Lenovo is good at, is to install malware on their laptops - fan curves not so much.

Gotta love lenovo ( I got the laptop used so I had none of the applications) I ordered some thermal paste and a laptop cooler to help it as it was clearly the heat. Doesnt help I dont have AC in my house and it has been 30 degrees for the past 4 weeks
KenadianCSJ 666 Share Posted August 2, 2016 Assuming it isn't software side like Folt thinks it is, if it's only the GPU throttling it's probably just the contact between that die and the heat sink on it. I had almost the exact same kind of throttling problem on my laptop awhile ago, new thermal paste and a good cleaning helped. canadiantrex

I know its not server side as the GPU will actually clock up to max speeds but then clocks down after it hits 100 degrees

That's exactly what it was with my laptop, piece of shit that it is.
