Mediocrity defined

Recommended Posts

Hello. Signed up just to thank you lot for a great resource.

Never been much of a gamer. Broke my left leg into many little pieces last December mountain biking. Came across Blitz while still stuck on the couch in April. Quickly became aware of the "real" game and haven't looked back. Browsing this forum and listening to/watching the likes of Zeven, Decha, and Va1heru in action has helped me stop being a total liability to my team. Or so I thought...

While I don't delude myself that I'll ever be any good, my stats were consistently improving. Generally playing tiers 6-8, I was pretty confident my overall win rate would top 52% before 10k battles. I expect dark green wn8 and a win rate of between 52%-57% in my current crop of tanks. I've even managed light blue stats with my T29 (woohoo). But then I decided to have a crack at Tier X. Whilst I'm bad in the T-54, I'm truly abysmal in the Obj. 140. And like a cancer, my awful play in this tank seems to have spread to my whole account. My overall WR for the last week is 47% ffs. I know basically why I suck in the 140 and T-54: nowhere near enough DPM, especially in the first 5 minutes. I'm a hopeless farmer. But in my other tanks? Things have got so bad that I'm struggling not to theorise a conspiracy regarding MM: my stat collapse directly coincides with me recently letting my premium account go (due to going in for hopefully my last round of surgery for my leg). I know that's not actually the case. Time to reassess.

Blah, blah, blah. Great site. Thanks.

I'd say I fall squarely in the trail class of rider. Not skilled enough to be an endurobro and not fit enough to race XC.

ex-XC and downhill rider here. Used to be sponsored by Specialised and then Orange (always loved their frame geometry) but after doing 4 discs in my back on a freshly sharpened treestump (thanks, Foresty Commission and Coed-y-Brenin trail management staff) I gave it up for more relaxing pursuits like base jumping, kite surfing, dragon boat racing and anything involving a wingsuit.

Bugger. Guess I'll have to change my heading then. Is there even a power supply down here in the sewer?

So off the bike altogether, then, Tigeh? No jumping from heights or dragon boating for me. Looking forward to getting my canoes and sea yak back on the water though. How's then NA server ping from the land of Oz? I'm guessing it would be pretty bad down here in Tassie.

ps guess i have to read up on the rep system here. I'm clicking on green arrows for the fun of it...

Yeah off the bike altogether...as if smashing my disks wasn't enough, I tore one playing squash that went on to be Cauda Equina Syndrome. Ended up with 2 spinal cord injuries over 3 years (both ending with incomplete paraplegia) and a power wheelchair. Kayaked way back in the day but mostly for relaxation with friends, mostly grade 5.X in a trustee Pyranha Stunt Bat and a couple of precursors to the Burn/Burn III and 9R - the Bat was always too small but used to respond so well (I was 6'5" but fairly light @ ~65kg) that I was loathe to give it up. Funny because my twin brother was an instructor at the National Watersports Centre at Holme Pierrepoint, but all I wanted to do after a slalom competition was grab a playboat and go and find somewhere no-one had tried before, whether it turned out to be Gr 3.0 or 5.3!

Have actually been looking at going away with some of the guys and using a Liquid Logic Remix 59 or Lil' Joe (probably the Remix) but the reality is that I'm not keen to get trapped underwater without working legs - especially not on a new segment of whitewater, so I may have to sit it out despite them offering to fully fund the adventure.

NA can be 180 if you've got good connection and an extra 70-80 to East - I've got a crappy connection so it's often 300, but I've had a unicum account on SEA and found it horrible to play - there's a reason EL Gaming and B-Gaming mostly went 5-0 at APAC Finals and then 0-5 at the Challenger Rumble.

As a new poster you're limited in upvotes, but just give any post of mine and upvote and you'll be fine.

I'm based in Melbourne on the NBN, but not on one of the top-level plans. I manage a solid ~280 ping to NA East, about ~190 ping to NA West. This is pretty consistent and stable, although occasionally I'll get massive lag spikes with ping in the 300-500 range and lots of packet loss (the game is unplayable when this happens, but thankfully this is fairly rare).

Generally no issue playing the game, although I do chuckle when I see other posters complain about >100 ping affecting performance.

I get the impression you don't do things in halves, Tigeh. :) And yeah, I've run out of green arrows.

190ms to NA sounds like an option. I'm used to playing between 140-200 ms on SEA. I find that as soon as my ping stays above 200, even around 210, my connection stability goes out the window, making tracking or leading shots difficult. But iiNet sucks big ones. Gotta get around to changing my provider.

They finally got electricity to Tasmania? :kwim:

Dont watch @Va1heru as he is a legit scrub :tanfiesta:. ASIA meta has no meta. NA is fun as mostly everyone speaks english so the insults stick and they tend to get salty about re rolls.

@sohojacques

 and

worth a quick watch - "why reach for the sky when you can reach for the bottom of the river and pull your skirt?"

but yeah - married with a kid now so I had to slow down - trying to get the funds together for powerchair rugby and powerchair soccer though.

Welcome so so jack.

Tig, being married with kids is an extreme sport all on its own.  The first time you step naked out of a cold shower holding a feverish toddler and he shits down your front while simultaneously vomiting down your back - you'll look back on your days as an Antarctic free-diver as lol-eazy.

Not with that attitude you wont. There are two types of players in WoT, the ones who are bad and do nothing about it and the ones who were bad but then did something about it. I hate it when someone says something like "I'll never be good", what they are actually saying is "I dont care if Im good or bad, I wont invest my time/brains in this".

P.S. sorry about the rant and welcome :disco:

Couldn't agree more. I was the biggest noob when I started out and now I am "slightly less mediocre" according to @Victrix :doge:

Welcome. Ironman Triathlete here (strictly amateur age grouper). Been hit by a car while riding (no bursa in left hip socket now), almost chopped off my right thumb, and lived through a serious auto accident. No permanent lasting injuries though, just the normal overuse syndrome, torn tendon here and there, AT issues etc. Very minor things compared to yourself and Tigeh. Ridden single track a bit on a Giant clone, but my main ride is a Kestrel Talon TT Carbon frame with Zipp Firecrest 808/404 combo. Basically, saying "hey" I like to get outdoors too and sharing something in common.

Great place to get better. I came at this game and for 10K battles wondered why my German 88's weren't shredding everything, got called stupid, a shitter, many other things, and found the forums, both Main and WoTLabs. After asking questions, and ditching the historicity approach, slowly started getting better. Some things from "real world" principles apply, angling, hull down, focus fire, flanking etc. Everything else though is pure Arcade and you have to factor all that in. WotLabs is the place to learn all that, great resources here. The vehicles section and a quick perusal will give you an idea of lines, pros/cons, play style, crew and equipment suggestion. Check it often, I do.

This is the place to ask questions, and start working out the kinks. Takes time at my battle count, stats move glacially, but too much time invested in this account to really care about the rate of climb, just want to get to "sub-mediocre" . . . otherwise known as a stagnant teal.

The school teachers are on the forum tonight.:) Did think I was improving; heading towards Victrix definition of mediocre at least. But this last week... they operated on my leg not my brain so I've got no excuse. Anyway, can I leave detention yet?

Seems like quite a number of Oz players opt for NA West. Do you have to start a new account or faff about to transfer your old one?

Nothing quite like a family dose of gastro. I was seriously considering home schooling the kids just a month ago.

I've run out of green arrows again. So nothing personal if you missed out.

Nah. Half the reason I rode a bike was to recharge batteries.

I marvel at Valheru's farming ability, as well as his atrocious taste in music. Kid's these days...when I was young...real music...etc.

@sohojacques yeah, I read through @Tigeh's litany of wounds, and thought "man, I am a pussy." lol. I mean I have eaten asphalt more times than I can count, been a bloody mess, but never "truly" hurt.

@Tigeh - the way you keep going, and that attitude with those injuries is admirable. Can't say I would do the same under those circumstances.

@SmirkingGerbil i try not to put it like this too often, but i've got 3 choices:

  • kill myself (not happening, have a wife and kid)
  • make the best of it (moan sometimes but generally get on with life)
  • depression and self pity (doesn't help anyone, least of all me)

It's natural to surf #3 occasionally - I lost a business that employed people and made me feel useful. but #1 is not an option and that leaves #2. Still gets to me weeks like this where I've got a collection obsession and no funds to collect the Libertie, Patriot or Black Mutz, but that's something I really need to grow up on (or see a good psychologist with energy I don't have).

That just makes you cleverer and/or luckier. Getting truly hurt isn't something one intends to do - for instance shredding all the major ligaments in both knees hitting a tree stump skiing deep powder in my teens doesn't make me a lion.

perhaps taking half a pack of ibuprofen with a warm beer and then going down the pub before the hospital does though I was young and stupid.

Also once hit a chair lift pylon while racing slalom. Those things give even less than they look like they would.
