Captain skills for Great Freddy.

Recommended Posts

I have a Bismarck with a 14 pt captain specced for secondaries*. When I unlock FdG later this month I will keep the Bismarck.

Are these Captain's skills the best for Freddie or should I look at training a new Captain (I have a Shinyhorse) and leave the secondary specialist on the Bismarck?

If a new Captain is called for, which skills would you pick?

* Adrenaline Rush, BFT, AFT, Manual Secondaries.

I left my 16 point captain specified for secondary's in the Bismarck, and took a 10 point captain and plopped him in the Freddie G.  I have basically set up all of my ships and captains based on Flamu's specifications.  He builds the tier 9 and 10 BB's on being tanky, and does not use the points for manual secondary's.  Just hop into his YouTube channel and search for the Friederich, he gives the modules and captain skills at the end of each video.

To be honest, ever since I have gone "Full Flamu" my win rate, damage, kills, kbd and wtr have all gone up drastically.  His stuff may not work for you, but it sure works for me - he is also very good at updating his ship builds every time there is a meta/skill/ change in the game.

Correct me if I'm wrong but pretty sure the builds would be very close if not exactly the same.

I am only at the Bismarck as well and have been training a Captain to put on that ship so as to move the current Bismarck up to the tier 10 eventually.  I too run a secondary build on it.

Biggie does the Flamu meta style (like most other BBs) involve hanging back more or being more aggressive?

No, Flamu pushes up his German BB's early, and takes a walloping, but he is drawing fire away from his team mates and allowing them to deal effective damage.  He also tries to build some concealment into them, so that when he disengages from the front line, he can heal back up and continue the fight.  His goal is to get in that German BB sweet spot where the turtleback is strong and the derpy guns can hit more often. Flamu is very effective in damage mitigation, and seems to last till the end of most matches - of course those are his YouTube videos, I don't watch his live streams due to work schedule and such.

All three high tier German battleships will essentially have the same build (secondaries). The only thing that might differ is if you want to run IFHE on the Kurfurst secondaries so they can pen the 32 mm of bow armor on most high tier battleships.

Map it takes 14 points for the secondaries build, so what did you take for secondaries AND tanking?

To me, a "tanking" build would be High Alert, BoS, Fire Prevention, Superintendant and maybe Adrenaline Rush.

ran the same builds for Bis Fred and Grobe.  Secondaries and tanking

It's Große, not Grobe. Read the ß like a sharp s or z and if you want to replace it in written language, because your language-set does not support this character, use a double-s.

Thank you for the correction.

@Manic_Wombat  here's my build,

Tier 1

Directional Cat

Tier 2

Jack of All Trades

Adrenaline Rush

Tier 3

Basics of Survivablility

Basic Fire Training

Tier 4

Advanced Fire Training

Manual Secondaries

I run Adrenaline because I'm very aggressive with my BB's.  It's why the German ones fit me so well.  I get within 10k, tank some damage, deal some with main guns and secondaries and lead pushes.

Yep, my build is pretty much the same as @map381. Only thing I do differently is take Expert Marksman over Jack of All Trades on my GK. One annoying thing about the GK is its turrets get incapacitated quite easily, so Preventative Maintenance isn't a bad option either for a one point skill.

You don't want CE to more easily get close / disengage instead of the tank?

I don't think CE works well with the high-tier German battleships.  For one, you're ideally going to be operating in that mid-range area anyway, so even without firing you won't have a large window of stealth.  For another, if you're using the 406mm guns, which I'd recommend, you'll be firing more often, giving you a shorter amount of time where you're operating on normal concealment instead of firing concealment.

You went with the 406's over the 420's? Was RoF the only reason? Is it really worth giving up the raw power of the bigger guns just to pew pew more often?

Also, I agree with not using CE on high tier Kruppwagons. The USN and IJN tier 8+ BB's are all quite comfortable at mid - long range, and thus can make good use of CE. The German ones just can't. They are all about short - mid range fighting so trying to hide your fat ass in them is pretty pointless.

For now I use this build (don't have Superintendent yet). Vigilance is down to personal preference on how I deal with destroyers (eat them rather than avoid them), but PM is for the shitty armored German BB turrets. None of my equipment on FDG is secondary build spec equipment though. I run the main batt durability mod, Aiming Systems and MBM3 to boost the main battery, and SGM2 for rudder shift, as well as the Concealment Mod for reduced 'please farm my exploitable German armor at long range' time. It works well enough that I don't find I need the CE skill on top of it. With that setup I get over 9km in secondaries range, which really is enough for t9/10.

I don't remember where I saw the math, but the 406s have better penetration up to about 12km, and the 420s surpass them from there, but not by a whole hell of a lot.  The shell damage gain isn't high enough to offset the rate of fire where DPM is concerned, and you gain negligible overmatch opportunities.  I used the 420s for most of my Freddy and maybe my first 10 Kurfurst games, but I switched to the 406s and went with MBM3 to get a 25.5 second base reload before Adrenaline Rush kicks in.  I've been much more consistent in my Kurfurst.

IIRC there was a dev quote long while ago when German BBs were fresh in the server saying "406 is better against cruisers, 420 better against BBs."

I wonder if that quote was made because 420 retains better pen at range or because 420 has more arcing trajectory better suited for hitting underwater citadels.

Honestly, I've noticed no real penetration change since moving back to the 406s.

Here's the problem I have with the CE on the 8/9/10 German BB builds - You can't shut off the secondaries afaik.  With the concealment Module and CE you get the Spotted Range down to what, 12 or 13 km?  If you have AFT and the Module which extends the secondary range you're at 10.6 km range for them.  Is that 4 point CE really worth the points for that extra 2 or 3 km?  I could see putting those points into being tanky with Fire Prevention or perhaps into more AA effectiveness like BFT.  Plus there's a good chance some airplane or DD is going to spot you anyways, even the worst Russian ones can get within 7 or 8 km ... When you changed the gun, did you find any drop in shells' ability to hit underwater citadels? i.e. NC, Amagi, Izumo...
