IN the long run, have you found wot more or less enjoyable?

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering, as the game has progressed, have you found wot more or less fun to play. I don't really know, but overall I would say the game seems a bit off somehow. This could be just me, but at the moment, it sometimes seems to be the case that theres a lot of "enduring the tedium" in this game to get at the fun. I recently got a load of other games in the Summer sale, and they seem to have a massive advantage over wot in that: Its fun to play well... whereas in world of tanks a lot of the time playing well doesn't necessarily mean fun. I don't know, its just an impression I get...

I think its got better, but mainly because of the changes to MM so that lights can now be top tier. I rarely play anything other than lights or mediums. I think tank choice is everything when it comes to enjoyment; some are just ARSE - like that Japanese Tiger they gave away - and others are just magic - like T49 or T54 Lwt.

Like Gryphon, I'm enjoying the game more of late because I've found my niche. Tiers 6-9, LT and MT goodness. Not having or needing a premium account since May is the icing on the cake.

3-5-7 MM seems to keep the number of HTs in check. All tier 10 matches that I've played recently are composed of 1/2-2/3 HTs. Add to that maps like Paris and Abbey being in very high rotation: fuck tier 10. Hopefully the new battle mode shifts the meta. If it does I'll consider failing at tier 10 again.

If I was good enough to play mostly tier 10 I suspect I would be despairing at the current state of the game?

I'm one of those people who tends to settle on a small number of games to play over quite a few years. WoT has kept its place on that list for a few years and is one of the most fun games I've played—except when it isn't. Ninety-nine percent of the time, I just have fun driving a tank and shooting other tanks and being kinda bad. One percent of the time, I get too caught up in whether I'm winning or losing or performing well, and then I get frustrated when I or my teammates or RNG let me down. When that happens, I just stop playing and do other things. Later when I come back to the game it's always fun and relaxing again.*

*Except when grinding French TDs. That's not so much fun as a Freudian exploration of suffering.

Fun, most definitely, even through the frustrations, and my apparent plateauing.  When it stops being fun, I'll stop playing.

I found the game to get less and less fun as I improved. Standards got harder to keep up and WG really did their best in trying to remove any sort of competitive aspect to game completely (sorry not sorry but stun mechanics are hellalot worse than SP(RN)G when XVM is still a thing along with attempts to completely retardproof certain tanks

Sure some things got better, but as a whole game balance and the point of doing anything but play casually because you think tanks are cool went down the drain completely

I play less and less for each month that passes

Overall, I am positive that, if I had just kept being bad at the game and not bothered getting better, I would of stopped playing this game years ago and have moved on to another.  but Because I chose to get better, joined a clan, started playing competitive, I found this game much more enjoyable, and since I am also applying the idea of learning the game and trying to be the best I can at it to other games I play, Im enjoying games as a whole a lot more and getting a lot more longevity out of each game I play.

However, in the past Months, I have started getting less and less invested in the game and have been losing interest in it. there are two main reasons for this: First, the 9.18 MM changes Made playing tier 10 impossible at my prime time because of queue times, 5+ minutes of queues to get a single game is really annoying as you can imagine (however the new Central US server is starting to help that issue). And second: the balance changes and decisions WG have been making the past ~6 months have all been fucking retarded. the Maus+Type 4/5 buffs. the STRV being a thing full stop, Retarded ass premiums like the defender, Boosting and Map climbs are ruining the hell out of map balance and make the game extremely unenjoyable. Heck, there is like one single change coming in 9.20 Im looking forward to. if it is coming in 9.20 (the Type 59 gun handling buff) Most of the 9.20 changes are changing tanks that don't need to be changed, for no real reason, or are the wrong changes. its just constantly demoralising to see WG obviously has no idea what they're doing any more. and I mean any more. 2 years ago most balance changes were fine, made sense, and good for the game. now they're just completely ruining it.

I am a scrub so I play 8s the most. At least, I used to.

It goes without saying that the clusterfuck that is 3-5-7 mm, retarded prems and certain retarded tier 10 prems have made the game considerably less fun for me. I remember spamming games in the Spershing, the IS-6, the FCM, and the WZ-111 used to feel........fun. Now, Tier 8s are a chore even when I'm in the Chrysler K.

Tier 10 would be good, if there weren't Type 5s, Mauses, Grilles and yoloing BCs every game. As it stands, Tier 10 balance is a mess and spamming HEAT at cupolas half the time - soon to be 70% of the time if the Patton, T-54, and 140 changes make it, is not only as un-fun as it gets, but is also a massive credit drain which means more Tier 8s, which are currently getting butt-fucked by the new MM.

To side-track a bit, there's also the issue of improved equipment. Rarely have I noticed any difference between normal and improved equipment, but when I did, the results were often aggravating. Getting outreloaded by a 140 in my 430, for example, is just bullshit. Now there is talk of Grand Battles and earning minuscule - pitiable amounts of bonds from them. As a filthy casual, this pisses me off deeply. The time I can afford on WoT is limited. The times in which I can find the game tolerable is even less. I cannot play Ranked 24/7, and obviously I will not. Where does that leave me? It means that my tank will always be inferior, and unless I spam 3000 games in Tier 10 it will always stay inferior. Players on ASIA are by and large as uncompetitve as they get, and I mean no offence with that. We never asked for improved equipment. If nothing else, the result on the forums was overwhelmingly negative. Yet we have to bear with this shit. Where is the fairness in that?

Finally, Tier 7 and 9s do feel better. And arty does feel less bad. I will be playing WoT for those tiers, until and if they fix this pos that is their game.

Phases were discovery and learning - fun.

Joining a clan and all that - fun.

Doing more clan admin stuff - sometimes fun, mostly a low reward job.

E sports - serious but fun.

Getting satisfied with my ability - mostly stressful but rewarding.

No longer working towards specific goals - fun but empty.

And as a few above have mentioned yoloing around in lights because why not - fun but shit accuracy is shit.

That's difficult to answer.  Things have improved and also become worse in terms of fun or game enjoyment.

For me, the regular competitive play has become less fun.  Clan wars and tournaments are somewhat ruined with Clan Wars 2.0 and the decrease in tournament payouts, but it seems that clan wars is improving a little now.  Clan Wars campaigns are still fun, but tiring.  The elimination of multiple leagues for team battles was a bad idea.  However being in a clan with a good group of people makes competitive play fun.

Pub battles overall have become more enjoyable despite my favorite tanks being bottom tier twice as much as they use to be.  Outside of a few tanks, pub battles seem better balanced in terms of team composition.  You no longer see a team of 10 heavies vs a team of 3 heavies on Himmelsdorf.  Less battles seem to be determined by team tank composition than they were before.  It seems that map awareness had decreased in the average pubbie.  In the past year, when I'm playing a slower tank, I've lost more battles due to being capped out than I ever did before because my team mates absolutely refuse to look at a map or respond to what is on a map.  I see more of my teams giving the enemy the win instead of the enemy earning the victory.

Now if they would just fix the completely broken Type 4 and Type 5 heavy tanks that can autoaim, pop out, click and hit you for 300-700 damage with no skill required while we have to carefully aim for weak spots to damage them then it would be an improvement.

RNG has made the game more frustrating and less enjoyable as I improved.  Nothing like playing a tank with a 5 or 6 skill crew and having 6 fully aimed shots at stationary tanks missing while some sub 400 WN8 player in some tank with 0.44 accuracy snapshots me on the move while rotating hsi turret from 400+ meters 3 times in a row.  I guess my highly experienced 6 skill gunner and 0.32 dispersion means nothing?

The artillery changes haven't made me hate artillery any less.  Sure, the number of times you were one shot by artillery has greatly decreased.  However artillery can easily hit light and medium tanks on the move and switch form one target to another and hit it before its no longer spotted in less than 10 seconds.  SPGs are still a completely broken game mechanic.

Overall I still find the game fun and enjoyable.  Honestly the most enjoyable times playing the game was my first 2,000 battles.  It was so new and exciting then.

I have found less enjoyment out of the game as I've kept playing. Why?

  1. No endgame content. "You've reached tier X, where all the excitement is? CW rewards are dead and getting into a clan that rewards any amount of gold is nigh impossible"
  2. Competitive scene is about as fucked as it gets. While this ties into endgame content and another point, it's big enough to matter. You can't really get into it easily, the game tries hard to keep players away from the scene, etc.
  3. WG has no idea where the direction of the game wants to go. I don't care how casual the game is or how competitive the game is. Tanks like the T26E5 and 252U get released, obviously catered towards casual players and whales to spend money on to get people to spend money and change tank lines to be flavor of the month so people spend copious amounts of free xp. On the other end of the scale, they release Ranked Battles (which already have stupid War Bonds tied to them) and spend millions of dollars on a competitive scene. WG just doesn't know what they want to do and so it looks unprofessional.
  4. Terrible balancing and flavor of the month bullshit. WTE-100, current Foch 155, old Foch 155, new Maus, tier X light tanks

I found these factors to be greatly detrimental towards my urge to play. I can't rely on the tank I play being consistent, with WG taking broad sweeping changes to tanks. I can't be sure that I'm going to actually be able to earn gold from endgame content. I also can't be sure that I'm going to be able to see competitive changes or changes that would benefit casual players.

I actually think the game overall is in a much worse spot today than it has been in the past and I think the balance between tanks is the worst it has probably ever been, at least while I have played, I didn't play until the end of 2012 or thereabouts. There have been a few unbalanced tanks in the past, the WTE100, the pre-nerf pzIV/M4 105 HEAT and a few others that were stupid. But the gap between what is usable and what is not right now is enormous. Guns keep getting bigger, armor keeps getting thicker and premiums that are essentially upgrades to the tech tree vehicles keep getting released.

Just my $0.02 to add to my earlier post and others posts: I think the high point in this game was late 2014-early 2015. Around the time of the third campaign. At that time it had (at least on NA) the best blend of Tank Balance/class balance, a thriving competitive scene, league was starting to just get popular enough and probably would of continued to if they stayed on track, and was a high point for server population, and a high for active clans further increasing the competitive element.

After that, with the release of CW 2.0, is when it started going down hill

mixed feelings, but overall I still enjoy playing this game

this is still the game I pretty much only play, mostly because my PC is just crap enough to run WoT, but also because this is really the only game in the market that is truly successful. WarThunder is a completely different genre, and Armored Warfare shot itself in the foot by bringing nothing new or innovative into the mix or understanding the market properly.

unlike other FPS games, WG can do as they please since they have no direct competition, but that also means they can take their time and continue to mold and shape the game, rather than make panic moves or even abandon this game like so many other MMOs

WoT was just a game to chill out occassionally. I was satisfied if I deal 3-4 damaging shots and winning or losing was not very important. Until the day my friend discovered and introduced me wn8 and stats.

After that the game became a job. I wanted to have good stats for sake of having them. This is the point my enjoyment devolved from one path to another. The guy who was happy to deal 500 damage was no more happy if he did not deal purple wn8 damage. My perfectly aimed shot that misses; shot that finds rare strong point in enemy paper armor, shot that deals less than average damage, teammates die in 2 minutes, nerfing of favourite tank, failing personal missions (500 tries 3-1-15), enemy snapshotting in his russian heavy at max distance... all of them annoyed me to the point of being angry german kid meme myself. Then the passion declined to the point of playing a few games a month.

In the long run, game became less enjoyable for me.

Much less enjoyable over time. Because OP premiums and tank balance gone to hell. Also no end-game content is pretty unrewarding after a while.

For me personally I would say yes and no.

I have began enjoying the game more and more as I got better but at the same time it also soured the experience for me because I started to see more and more of the flaws (RNG, MM, majority of the player base) of the game. Flaws that you have no control over but they effect your own performances and outcomes of games. That makes me pretty annoyed (to say the least) some days.

My enjoyment factor has gone down. The new template MM is boring as hell and being a support tank most games by being bottom tier really blows when you like to play aggressively. We are living in the pussy's paradise of gameplay style. The age of rage is over.

Also, no sales on the weekends and the anniversary blew chunks. The game is starting to fade for me.

Eh. I have some fun with it, but at a certain level the game is just empty. The grind is its own reward, and as the corridors get tighter, and the map variety gets smaller, Im starting to get pretty fatigued about the whole thing.

I cant even into CW, because prime time is just too farkin late for me to commit too (thx asia server timezones).

Its a pity, because at its core, the gameplay is solid, and kinda unique. But that lack of variety, lack of viable alternate modes, and lack of any sort of narrative style content means that the game will only ever appeal on the mechanics level, and that can get kinda tiring after a while.

In the 2015 era I had loads of fun, playing the camo&flanking meta. The playerbase was worse, with less tryhards, and after the arty nerf the number of skypigs was so small that most games were arty free.

But then, things changed. Map changed, many creative/camo spots were removed, forcing eventually most players into the W-shoot-S-repeat cycle 50m ahead of each other, and that thing always bored me to tears. The number of artillery units increased, and one could never be sure of his tanks. FOTM and broken, expensive must-have prems were just too much.

I tried getting back to WoT a couple times, but around a year ago I gave up and sold my account. Ever since that day, I never had any urge to play this game again. I do read the forums from time to time, though. Mostly to giggle at how bad WG is at managing this game.

Same, honestly I don't feel the attraction any more. I used to love the mind games/rapid decision-making situations arisen from the camo/flank meta. But sadly, no more endlessly fascinating & unique puzzles in corridor games, and hence no actual intellectual depth. Might as well just go pick a popcorn FPS if I just want some quick surges of adrenaline/WASD-and-yo-down moments.

Personally, I kind of gave up on this game a long time ago.  Got into clan wars and competitive play a few years back pretty seriously, but its hard to care now since so few of the old timers are around anymore.  You spend 3 years doing CW with the same few guys across a couple clans it's hard to stay interested when you're playing with a bunch of guys you barely know.  Last year and a half to two years I just cant bring myself to play more than a few days back to back without a month or two off.  Besides, I have all the tanks I want and with no one to platoon with, what's left?

I enjoy the game more when I play within my limitations (which are myriad), meaning tier 7 lights and my t20, for example, where I am capable of contributing to and occasionally even carrying my team.  I like winning, what can I say (which is certainly not the same as being good at it).  Found a couple of good buddies with whom I enjoy playing, and having a son who plays (and who digs discussing game mechanics with me) helps a metric ton as well.

There are plenty of negatives, to be sure, but overall, I've found the game more enjoyable and less frustrating as I've improved.  My big thing now is working on learning from and enjoying even my bad games - trying to find something positive even in those ("hey, I got swarmed by 6 enemies, but I did a pretty good job hiding my hull and staying alive as long as I did," or "man, I only hit once, but that was a pretty sweet shot I pulled off") helps a ton.

Not keeping perspective is my single biggest fun inhibitor, and WG hasn't got squat to do with that.

But WG is still  on some serious drugs.
