Right now I play on an Asus x75a laptop (i5 3230m, intel hd graphics 4000, etc) which I've had since 2013ish. Basically I finally got fed up with playing everything on minimum/being slow/not being able to play things (pubg runs at about 10 fps) and am looking to upgrade. https://pcpartpicker.com/list/cjZQpb is what I'm looking at right now.

Some notes:

  • I do plan on picking another stick of ram in a month or two when I have some more money
  • I don't intend to overclock
  • a friend has recommended a 144hz monitor but I'm not entirely sold on whether it's worth the extra cost. If I do decide to go with it this is probably what I would go with: https://www.amazon.com/AOC-G2460PF-24-Inch-Gaming-Monitor/dp/B01BV1XBEI/ref=sr_1_5?tag=amazon0606-20&s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1461901857&sr=1-5&=
  • live in the USA
  • not going to cannibalize my laptop for anything as I'd still like it operable for trips and such
  • pricewise this is pretty much the upper limit - if anyone has any ideas to bring cost down while offering similar performance they'd be much appreciated, I'm not experienced at all in building pcs

That's it basically, just looking for advice on the build/where to buy from/etc. Thanks :)

for this kinda money, you could get a 1060 laptop (aka the helios 300 https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B06Y4GZS9C/ref=s9u_wish_gw_i1?ie=UTF8&colid=25H89Q9NV13MK&coliid=I35L3XREJDINWE&fpl=fresh&pd_rd_i=B06Y4GZS9C&pd_rd_r=QQFJWK6YVVP0CRS2MDT0&pd_rd_w=2Odad&pd_rd_wg=6tg9Z&pf_rd_i=desktop&pf_rd_s=&pf_rd_m=ATVPDKIKX0DER&pf_rd_r=RA60NM564GT1C9Q40FEY&pf_rd_t=36701&pf_rd_p=781f4767-b4d4-466b-8c26-2639359664eb&th=1)

alternatively if you still want a desktop, you should at least get a 1070 for this kind of budget, or better yet, wait for the 1070ti thats coming out next month and see if you can get one of these

i can share some of my builds, this one is primarily gaming and its pretty easy to upgrade later on with the initial benefit of a top of the line gpu https://pcpartpicker.com/list/jLg3LD

of course this pre built is agrueably better than this build since you don't have to pay for the OS and it comes with a 1070 (which is much better than a 1060) https://www.amazon.com/Performance-Desktop-G11CD-WB51-GeForce-processor/dp/B01K1JWCAK/ref=sr_1_4?s=pc&ie=UTF8&qid=1507336950&sr=1-4&keywords=gaming+desktop+gtx+1070

you could then pair it with this monitor which unlike your friends, is $20 less and has IPS screen https://www.amazon.com/AOC-I2267FW-22-Inch-Frameless-Brightness/dp/B00CLZ047Q/ref=pd_sim_147_12?_encoding=UTF8&pd_rd_i=B00CLZ047Q&pd_rd_r=1MAATV71PRB5Q94EGJF4&pd_rd_w=cUG5n&pd_rd_wg=S5YI0&psc=1&refRID=1MAATV71PRB5Q94EGJF4

Microsoft toolkit, it'll save you 100 bucks on the Windows 10 key.

Keyboard wise gaming keyboard doesn't really offer much, i've been using the same Logitech K120(12 bucks) for years and have no problem.

I would def invest in a 21-24 inch 144hz monitor tho, with a 1060 6gb you can run tanks at 120+ fps, and there is a pretty big difference between 60 and 120+, that or use the 160 bucks or so you saved and get a 1070, but eventually i think you are gonna want a 144hz monitor and 1060 can last at least 2-3 years if you play on 1080p.

There's a very easy way to save 100 on Windows by sailing the high seas See Carbon's post

Don't get a semi-modular power supply, you might as spend more now on a modular gold so you can deal with minimal cable management and use it for future builds.

Not looking for another laptop, and a 1070 is definitely out of my price range considering I don't really want to skimp on other parts. I will take a look at your build but also don't really want to buy a prebuilt.

Cant comment on Ryzen, but:

Ram, you wont notice any differenxe between 2133/2400/3000MHz etc RAM speeds for games, if a lower speed is cheaper, Id get that instead.

SSD - id get a Samsung 850 EVO myself. Simply cannot beat samsung in the SSD market.

HDD - some people have apparently had issues with Seagate HDDs, and refuse to touch them. However I have basically that exact drive and havent had any problems, but its something to consider just in case

PSU - as others have said, Id get a fully modular one. Ive had to deal with non modular PSUs and ever since using a modular I will never buy anything non modular ever again. Trust me your sanity will be glad you got one.

-Monitor, if thats the monitor I think it is, it is the one that both I AND pityfool use lol. Its a seriously good monitor. As per 144Hz, with a 1060 I dont think its worth it. If you had a 1070, hell yeah. But Id rather use the money on a 1070 and get a 144Hz screen later rather than get the screen without the GPU.

These are just my opinions/preferences. If folter comes in and says no im all wrong, I highly suggest taking his advice instead.

Wrong. Ever since Skylake (I think it was), RAM speeds have actually made a difference to some extent, a noticable difference.

Don't bother with Corsair CXM PSUs. I agree with dia. Spend the little more to get a gold tier 1 PSU (i.e. the EVGA 650W G2 Supernova).

Do what Carbonward suggested on the OS. Alternatively buy yourself a OEM key and shave off $50.

Don't bother with a 144hz monitor unless you plan on playing at low-mid as you won't be getting anywhere close to those frames on games outside of tanks. 100/120Hz monitors would be more of the kind you would want given your specs. You'll just end up with visible screen tearing on the 144 otherwise.

Unless you consider between 1 and extra 5fps to be a deal braker (and that 5 being a minimum and not an average) on a 7700K+1080ti, with the differenxe between 2133 and 3600 being under 3fps average then no, its not noticable.

Ryzen also had a 1-3fps difference.

Is 3fps REALLY worth an extra however much it is in the US? (In NZ its as much as an extra $80-$100 for 16GB 3600 over 2133 IIRC)

I changed your partlist a bit. Roughly the same price but better quality

https://pcpartpicker.com/user/F0lterknecht/saved/#view=cxzPsY

  • SSD:better flash memory (MLC instead of TLC)
  • PSU: Corsair CX arn't that good, the Seasonic model for the same price is ... any day of the weak (and it's fully modular)
  • switched to a different 1060 model, which should run with higher clocks right out of the box while offering better noise/performance at least using a custom fan curve in Afterburner

That aside I strongly suggest you save up an other ~100$ and do it right from the start. Why?

  • that single 8GB stick while 3000 MHz has horibble timings (16-18-18-38 at 1.35V) negating much of the performance gain from the faster speed. Ryzen profits from better RAM. With a B350 board which often are artificial limited at 2933MHz, I 'd buy 2x 8GB 3000MHz 15-15-15-32(34) from the start - matching different RAM for a newbie on Ryzen later down the line might be a big hurdle
  •  4 cores and 8 threads, isn't bad for pure gaming if you overclock a little bit (not hard). Personally though when I can get 6cores and 12 threads for only ~30$ that's a no brainer for me considering we 're moving slowly toward games which can make use of more than 4 threads (background processes aside -> stutter)
  • That monitor :eww:. Might be usable as a secondory (streaming - > chat+OBS window) but I wouldn't want to use it as a primary. 1920X1080 (1200) needs 23-25" in my book. Can't you get a cheap used TFT for 30-50$ (refurbished at some office/electronic outlet) and safe up some $ for half a year to get something decent??? Do yourself a favor there

How good is the wraith spire on 1500x for OCing?

It's good enough. Naturally an aftermarket cooler will do better but its surprisingly fine.

yeah, bouncing from him, i'd recommend saving up just a notch bit more from this price point; in addition the 1070ti is really close to the 1080 performance while being close to 1070 cost (about $30); if mininers don't buy up all these cards, it might actually be worthwhile (and buy-able) for gaming http://www.legitreviews.com/nvidia-gtx-1070ti-see-october-26-launch-date-430-msrp-according-source_198176

Flare's build has been tuned down to this:

Might need some fat to be cut off in some places but overall its starting to look good.

Why aren't you going for decent M.2 boot drives instead of SSDs? 250GB versions aren't more expensive than that SSD price (unless going for the 960 EVO NVM.e) and the clocks are much better. Is it something else I'm missing?

Honestly hadn't heard of M.2 before - while looking at parts I just sorted by ssd/hdd and picked accordingly. Are they really noticeably faster than regular ssds?

Only some of them (NVME drives) and for the avg user it doesn't matter ... it's nothing like SSD vs HDD.

The SSD I selected is a solid choice at a low pirce.

About 6 times in read/write speeds for the newer ones, but looking at it the cheaper ones might be pointless, the 3000MB/s read/write should be around 120 euros which might be too much and the cheaper ones are at around 560MB/s which isn't a real upgrade from an SSD anyway

Gotcha, if that's the case I'll stick to what @Folterknecht suggested. https://pcpartpicker.com/user/flare_phoenix/saved/#view=HbNzMp <-Probably what I'm going to end up getting, decided to upgrade some things (1500x->1600, 1060 3 gb -> 6 gb).
