I decided to test some of the alternative non-Lego brick brands out there to see what was worthwhile.  Oxford are South Korean Legos with a lot of military themes.  I got this bad boy and it's sitting proudly on my kitchen table.  It was a lot of fun and decent difficulty much like older 1980's Legos were.  Much more satisfying money spent than WG's ridiculous virtual ship prices.

Brickmania makes smaller, higher detail stuff, but its expensive. I was really tempted to get the Yamato when I was in their store at the MoA, but it was almost $300 USD, not something I could afford.

Been down to the science center and walked thru the sub?

I have!  We have a museum membership every year.  I love checking that out, as my grandfather served in one in WW2.

A cheaper alternative: https://www.amazon.com/Nanoblock-Technology-NB-004-Battleship-Yamato/dp/B001ET5NUI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1510345468&sr=8-1&keywords=nanoblock+yamato

My 5yr old loves it.  And loved getting to drive near it in a Ducky Tour. (I'm a 'burger too)
