Need new headset - halp?

Recommended Posts

I need a new headset, again. I accidentally snapped the one I have in half and had to tape it together again. Now the tape annoys me and the sound in general isn't good enough for FPS since I struggle to determine direction with my current open/on ear headset.

New one needs to be:

- USB connection (jack thingy on pc is broken, cba to fix, dunno how to fix)

- Light and comfortable (don't want wireless because of added weight in battery, got a neck injury)

- Around the ear or suuuuuper soft on ear, my ears are extremely sensitive, get a headache for fuckall

- Preferably not sweaty leather

- Crystal clear sound made for FPS and a static free mic

- 150-ish euro max budget

I looked at Sennheiser G4ME ONE, looks alright online and has good reviews, but it's mini-jack connection.

Nurki skull is OP, please nerf.

In your price range honestly you can get a pretty good set.  I've had pretty good luck with Koss, although right now I'm just using a mono-phone so I can hear kids and stuff.

If its just for games, then the Hyper X Cloud 2s have super comfy pads (optional mesh pads to swap out leather with).

Good solution for "fixing"  jack thingy on pc

https://www.techpowerup.com/forums/threads/microphones-on-gaming-headsets-and-on-motherboards-suck-a-solution-for-8.236406/#post-3714716

to widen your options/selection so you can also buy headsets with regular plugs.

That aside

My son's got some Hyper Xs, and I can confirm the comfiness of the pads, along with the swappability.  They're definitely pretty nice.

HyperX II has such a ... special ... mic, my voice is already annoying enough, don't need it to be nasal and narrow too. :eww:

I think I'll go for a pair of Sennheisers, had a pair back in the day and I loved them so much. Also I have a friend I game with every day and he is hardcore Sennheiser fan and recommended the 373D. Sennheiser GSP 350/300/PC 373D are the contenders, in each price group. Will have to re-visit the subject when I get back from my holiday and know what I can comfortably spend, since I don't mind putting a bit of extra money in it to get a really good pair. I would probably buy the 300 today, but if I can comfortably get the 373D, then I think I will.

And I'll get the adapter thingy Folter linked if the headset doesn't have usb, so that broadens the horizon considerably.

Nurki take a look at these reviews:

https://www.techpowerup.com/reviews/?category=Headphones&manufacturer=&pp=25&order=date

They include soundsamples for the microphon similar to what I did in my mini-review of that USB thingy I did on techpowerup and the GSP300 sounds really good.

That's actual gold, thanks for the link! Will be checking all the headsets there before buying anything, don't wanna fuck up this time. :frenchy:

I know you said you don't want wireless for weight reasons. I have a set of Corsair void wireless 7.1 cans and I find them to be very good sound wise and comfy to wear. I just weight them and they come in at 376g. I looked up the set that was recommended to you and they weigh 355g... They are also twice the price, I'm sure the Sennheisers are much better quality though.

I ordered the Sennheiser GSP 350, due to be delivered on tuesday. They were just within budget with a discount at one of the retailers. I'll try it for a week or so and just return if not happy, and add some cash to the budget with my next paycheck and get the Game One.

I'll keep you posted :D

Be aware that USB Headsets often are worse than their regular stereo counterparts. If the manufacturer enforces the use of the integrated soundcard to produce 5.1 / 7.1 sound and there is no option for simple "passthrough" (stereo), that usually happens.

In case of the Corsair USB headsets I ve used, the stereo option always produced better sound in my book.

Ok, so I used the headset for two long gaming sessions now.

I really like the sound, the fit is great and my ears aren't that uncomfortable. When it gets a bit more worn and loved I'm sure the pressure around the ears will ease a bit. It will take some getting used to "hearing" myself talk all the time with the around-ear-stuff, but it's fine. I can toggle the surround off but a button on the wire, so it doesn't bother me at all, and the sound options are ok- nothing special or in depth. I've used the "Esports" mode for PUBG and although it's legit no bass and people sound a bit girly, it works. Then I toggle to game mode or no mode when I play other games that doesn't rely so heavily on hearing footsteps.

The mic is a bit muffled. I turned the mic volume to 100 in windows, which made it a lot better, but not sure if it's possible to get it as good as my last headset. Most likely not, as that was made for pure communication and not gaming, and was the same price as the Sennheisers. Not sure if there are any other options I can check(/uncheck) to improve mic quality, at least I didn't find anything obvious in windows. It's not at all terrible, just a bit muffled.

I think the mic on the 350 is the same as the one on the 30x headsets. And from the 30x review on techpowerup and their audio sample there was no "muffling" I can remember. That leaves the whole USB soundcard integrated into the headset the as the likely culprit in my book.

Yeah, I prob would get more out of it if I CBA to fix whatever is wrong with the minijack ports, but then again that would require minimal effort, soooo..

But yeah, I dunno if ppl just got used to it or what, but noone is complaining anymore after I turned up the mic volume in Windows. But I possibly need to test it with someone I haven't talked to in a while and ask what they think.

Today I got the GSP 303 from amazon and it will go back :-(

It fits on my head (barely) have to set it to max size and it's still a close fit- my helmet size is 60 (certainly on the bigger side but far from enormous). But the ear cushions are just too small for my liking, yes they fit around my ears but constrict them from the sides - no I'm not related to Dumbo.

Seems to me they designed that thing for boys and women and forgot about adault males bigger than 1.80m (>6ft).
