I need a new monitor

Recommended Posts

I built a new PC desk and I need a new monitor.  The 24" wide screen is just too small for the size/distance on the new desk.

I made a mock up of a 34" Ultra Wide Screen (LG 34UC79G-B )  and a 43" Wide Screen (ViewSonic VX4380-4K

My viewing distance is about 28" from the normal seating position.  I use the desk/monitor mostly for surfing the Internet and games.  It is very rare for me to watch a TV or Movie on the monitor.

To me honest the 43" does look too big, even at 4k I'm worried that the resolution might be a problem.  I could mount it onto the wall, that would push it back maybe an extra 4".

Samsung makes a 43" and 49" Ultrawide, but I think they may both be too wide...

What do you guys think, and what do you have (I'd like to hear good and bad of different sizes and formats (16:9 vs 21:9).  Also specifically to WOT.

Thanks

im not too smart with monitors but if its mainly for gaming i would go with a good 34inch monitor (currently using a 32inch vizio tv since my 24inch gaming monitor is set on my sim rig) if you do any sim racing the 49 ultrawide from samsung is what alot of the twitch sim racers use. think they just came out with a 1440p version not to long ago. but if you have the hardware to run at 43inch 4K then you got yourself a lovely setup for casual console gaming too.

not too sure about the ups and downs for WoT on the aspect ratios (again im dumb about monitor stuff only if it looks pretty lol)since im on a really old vizio smart tv but i think ultrawide would give you more peripheral vision letting you see more of the battlefield

I have an ASUS PG348Q 34" 3440x1440 monitor and love it.  My other monitor is a LG 4K monitor and that is off to the right side.  I just use it for teamspeak, streaming software, and game map info.  I prefer gaming on the ultrawide 3440x1440 34" monitor for most games.  It feels more immersive.

WoT works fine with the 3440x1440 monitor.  Set the FoV to 120 degrees instead of the 95 degrees which is the default for 16:9 1920x1080, 2560x1440, and 4K monitors.

Overall, I'm happy with the 3440x1440 34" ultrawide and wouldn't go back to a 16:9 monitor.  These days, there are very few games that don't work on an ultrawide monitor.  I can even get most 10+ year old games to run properly on a 3440x1440 monitor without any special configurations or editing game files.

I recommend the newer LG monitors such as:

https://www.overclockers.co.uk/lg-34gl750-b-34-2560x1080-ips-144hz-1ms-hdr10-freesync-g-sync-compatible-curved-widescreen-led-gami-mo-156-lg.html

Fast refresh rate IPS with minimal input lag is too good for settle for older monitors tbh. The "fastest" response time is 1ms with high overdrive but you can set it to medium which is around 3-4ms gtg which has no loss of quality and is still considerably faster than comparable monitors on comparison tests. I use the GL850 but obviously this is something a bit bigger for you, that being said it is 1080p ultrawide whereas mine is 1440p 16:9, so I would shop around to see what the bigger variations are.

I'm waiting for the GL850 to drop below $750 AUD before I get one.

Unfortunately my GPU wont handle it properly... but i should be upgrading when Volta comes out.

For the price of the 43" 4K monitor there are several very nice 3440x1440 100Hz to 144 Hz G-sync or FreeSync monitors.  You don't need to limit yourself to 2560x1080.

Niiice.

My setup is ridiculously similar to yours:
G502 Proteus Core mouse
Corsair K70 pre-RGB, even switched out the exact same keys: WASD, 1-6. XD
Similar audio, too. I've got the Logitech Z906, looks like yours is probably the Z506.

If you have a Sennheiser PC363D  headset, we might be long lost brothers.

4 months later I finally got the new monitor.

I went with the Alienware AW3420DW.  Currently $850 at Dell with 3% rebate at Dell and 2% at Rakuten.

Smiling_Jack, I missed your post.

I had the Logitech G930, they were getting worn out and I picked up the newer G933 about 18 months ago.  I had a OLD set of Sennheisers, but they were just headphones (no mic).

Jack, I use these two sites most often to check for "deals" on electronics.

https://www.techbargains.com/

https://slickdeals.net/  < This site seems more active

I got the AW3420DW directly from Dell.  I watched prices on the AW3418DW and the 20DW for about 4-5 months waiting for the best deal.  I had a hard time dropping $850 on a monitor considering my last 24" one was like $150.  Retail on the AW3420DW is an insane $1500!

One key reason I picked this monitor was the G-Sync.  I really like  Nvidia/GeForce over AMD/Radeon.  If you don't have an Nvidia card, there are other options that look very good for same price or less.

I read about a dozen articles like these:

https://www.digitaltrends.com/computing/best-ultra-wide-monitors/

https://www.techradar.com/news/best-gaming-monitor

GL on your search.
