Corona Virus vs WotLabs Community Megathread

Recommended Posts

I passed pneumonia and I didn't even know I had it while I was in the airforce. Same with H1N1 some years later.

Also the high mortality rates are not statistically true since that's on the confirmed cases, in reality the cases are several times more but they never get confirmed because of no need to get hospitalized. In Greece the message we all got on our phones was that if we feel sick NOT to try to get to a hospital.

It's a neat social experiment though. Sacrifice all liberty for some false sense of security. You know the famous Benjamin Franklin quote? "Those who would give up essential Liberty, to purchase a little temporary Safety, deserve neither Liberty nor Safety."

I personally find all the bans everywhere appalling.

I'm not sure if political stances are 100% public health compatible....

Its not about stopping the virus, its about slowing it down so that it doesn't overwhelm the medical sector.

Its about giving those among that can't fight it on their own a chance to survive. If we have to go without sports events or beers at the pub for a while then so be it.

Things will return to normal in a few months hopefully.

It's that now, it's going to be another thing later. All for the sake of "public safety". That's more frightening to me than any flu. Especially in Europe that we already surrendered our right to bare arms.

Just saying. That's what I get from this whole thing.

Somebody on the Internet just said that everything is fine till people don't die in mass. All we need is Plague Inc. scenario, right? I'm okay with gov's actions because it's still way better than doing nothing untill it's too late.

Exactly. Iran is digging mass graves. Hundreds are dying every day in Italy. If this isn't cautionary enough that the world needs to get its shit together, I don't know what is.

That's because rich assholes knew you'd never agree with "no taxes for rich people" so they had to use "are you going to let the government tell you what to do" to get there.

Coronavirus already lost then. In plague inc you win by only having the fatigue symptom until everyone is infected. then you ad something crazy like explosive diarrhea organ failure.

That awkward moment when some CDC guy at a press conference is like, "oh hey, here's something weird, people that died from this thing are starting to pop back up and eat people. Not sure what that's about?"

My favourite meme has to be that currently we are in the Plague Inc phase where you are getting annoying pop ups every 2 seconds about countries closing their borders

What do you mean? The cost for being in hospital? It's only 70-80% covered. Though hospital insurance is available and most have it though work.

So it's 80% covered by the country and the extra 20% can be insured? Got it. For a while It sounded like you have a strange model. Though now it is very strange to have to pay for epidemic related issues as this will discourage people from going to hospitals

Seriously this is not a flu and with a basic understanding of maths you can get that the actions taken now are needed. The difference between overburdened health systems and ones that have a steady inflow of new sick people mean a 10x rise in mortality. Panicking is bad but calling it a random flu because you don't like govt and like guns is just plainly dumb. The contagiousness is on Spanish Flu levels, the mortality is lower but only assuming the hospitals are not overrun.

Also ffs stop with the "hurr durr Imma take mah rifle and take on da gubmint" bs. It's thinking like that that allows people bigger than you to screw you over. You focus on the fear the government will put you in gulags while large business lobbies for 123152141 law loopholes or for weakening of government regulators. The govt regulators (from the evil gubmint ofc) have no money to investigate and the law is lax on large companies thanks to you being preoccupied with your fake revolution and you end up with stories like Jared Kushner's company deliberately poisoning people with heavy metals so they move out of rend stabilized apartments and not getting punished for it.

Also historically weak govt = crime. Early Russia Post USSR, Italy post unification. All were birth places of gigantic mafia organizations.  So yeah be against that because 5 year old boys hate rules

Imagine trying to start a debate on civil liberties during a fucking pandemic.

Fuck off.

Moderation supports this sentiment.

3 generations ago, the world was in disarray. Young men were being called up en mass to go to the army. Today, the world is in disarray again. We are being called up to couch potato and play computer games.

We can do this!

I remember really admiring that Ben Franklin quote until I got older and realized it was stupid lol. Maybe I'm in the minority here but I'd rather overreact than underreact.

Corona itself has mainly manifested in affecting school - break's been extended a week and I assume we'll solely be doing online classes for a good while. Otherwise I'm not that concerned for myself, but moreso for my parents. America's response has been pretty half-assed, and the whole unavailability of testing for the illness feels like a big red flag. I've heard many anecdotal horror stories about people who think they have it but can't verify because what testing supplies there are, are reserved for those who've recently traveled etc.

The books and games are unbearable. I cooked all the delayed dishes, I bike a lot. This is the real dystopia - comfortable gulags where you dont have to do anything and can walk around anywhere. The horror.

Practically you can walk around freely with enough protection and self-restrain.
Mask, don't touch your face, same thing over again.

The first week that we had cases guess where which part of the city became most crowded during weekend, the hiking trails. It was full of people every (standard being there are congestions) Saturdays and Sundays. Until somebody and his hiking friends caught corona. The Irony.

P.S. Bike lanes usage spikes up as well (as a leisure activity)

Still I don't want to make it too rosy. It's good for people who are not affected economically. Last year I transfered from Movie distribution to TV. My old Company will be inconvenienced but that's all but the marketing agency that serves them is screwed. People with regular non trash, full tax contracts are safe but those who wanted to get lower taxes are screwed and will not be payed for some time. People in service jobs are in really bad positions.
