10 Years of World of Tanks

Post here news on the 10th Anniversary, musings on terrible good times playing this game, and whatnot.

Going off the timeline in the link, I think my favorite era was Rubicon. Type 5 came out and it was a bit shit but still playable, TVP 50/51 came out which became a favorite among the unica, personal missions were introduced, tier 8 lights were put in the game which was fun

Return of General Chat, LOLz

SO much info on those pages, it looks like gold the probably the best rewards for the coins??  I kinda assume you can only buy 1 gold pack, because the gold per coin goes DOWN as you spend more.

That time when I quit.

Also ffs this is their biggest anniversary and the gifts are smaller than on an average weekend

Nobody can accuse them of acting out of character

I'd say it's even worse than usual but following a predictable trend.

A 3d skin for a T30? Really, guys? That's the big one?

I will never complain about camos, a) I like them b) better than some broke shit instead. Cosmetic rewards/economy worked out so much better for every other game in terms of game health.

The first phase was the best ofc, tier X tds and gold ammo ruined tier 10 for good.

Winter 2011 till summer 2011 was high point of wot, tier ix meds ruled, t5 scouts made life for arty miserable, and tier x heavys where more like tier 9.5, which was balance wise a good decision (not on purpose, but accidental)

OP stuff like T110E4 and 268 ruined the game, and wg balanc needing half a year to fix (whats new) ment that tier x was crap (also T62a was the ghetto peasant tier x medium, this did change over time....

EDIT: oh, and general chat is back, nice, now i can rage to the enemy again, and try to call out arty change (u kill yours, we kill ours!)

Around the time of the 3rd campaign was my best time for me. That was what? Late 2014? 2015ish i guess.

The general game and vehicle balance to me was the best its ever been. The only real cancer tank was the Waffle, the most OP tank in the game was the E5 and even then that was barely OP.

It also was around the time I felt the game population in general was at its peak (at least on NA), its only ever really been going down since.

Maps were turning corridor-ey but there were still some open maps where you could move around.

Back then I was in FOXEY, who were also my favourite clan to be in, and I still play and chat with a bunch of the old foxey guys even today.

Clan wars meta was also the most varied that I can remember. The E100 was viable. If you wanted an RU med it wasn't just the 907 or bust. The 62A was still viable. Heck if you didn't have one of the right tanks, the general balance was so much closer that running an off meta tank was easily workable - heck I remember playing my T10 VF4202 in one game and winning while doing near top damage lmao (rip that tank, so much fun)

After that, they started releasing bullshit. The Type 5, which I believe has not had any remotely positive influence on the game, ever since its release. The STRV, which is the same.

Eh, rewards do seem pretty lackluster, basically grind for special credits and then exchange them in the store for what may or may not be things you are interested in, including premium tanks. At the moment it looks like buying gold will be the best option. I don't mind the skins/custom camo as well, I think the cosmetic stuff is nice (I've found myself being more attracted to those items, although not really enough to pay real money for them) and a good way to spice up the visual look of the game or your favourite tanks, but I would have expected something a bit more than that.

Otherwise, as is usually the case, rose-tinted glasses will tend to mean the best part of the game is usually the bit near to where you started or were at your 'peak' in terms of time spent in the game. I joined in 2013, so I think 2014-16 was probably the most enjoyable for me as that's when I started to get the mechanics and establish myself in the game. I do feel that tank balance back then was generally a lot better too. WG's main issue apart from balance getting all wonky has been always attempting to do too many major changes all at once, getting muddled results and the inability to properly track how each individual change impacts on the game.

For me the beginning of the end was when they stopped caring about balance. The perception was that they got burned irreversibly after trying to sort out the super Pershing. Since then it appears they got a green light to release more and more broken prems and then just leave them there. Who needs balance when you aren't pretending to be a competitive game? And who needs balance when you can sell broken shit?

You are not wrong, everyone is pointing to the time they were in love, but you can't deny that wot used to be pleasantly simple. No missions, skills, sprem, adequate variety, plain box garage so forth. Not saying I hate missions or the sort but it was much easier to get in to the game then it is now. Just look at the new player retention between then and now.

Last year we had a 25% off consumable sale.

I'm taking all we can get at this point.

Oh for sure. When I started out in 2013 I went full free-to-play for over the first year. I felt for those willing to spend their time (I spent a lot of time playing tier 5 and tier 6 to grind credits and try and learn mechanics) it was entirely possible to get established in the game before pushing on and spending money. The lack of 'clutter' back then made that an easy focus because you weren't constantly grinding to complete daily missions and the like for every little carrot.

I agree on the camos, but offering a 3d style for a single tier 9 TD, as opposed to, for example, a choice between a few so that players can pick a tank they like, is just lazy IMO.

tbh a cool exclusive 2D style would've been a lot more fun than a 3D style for one tank. I just hope it's as cool as they make it sound.

Indeed. It's not even like the t30 is particularly iconic or even that sought after. I would have thought maybe some other cool tier 10 skin perhaps. But oh well, let's hope it at least looks good.

I realized during the april fool's event last year when I got to replay patch 0.7.0 that I enjoyed the game way more back then than I do now. Not saying everything was better, because it wasn't, but the game was much simpler and slower paced.

Such fun.

Best guilty pleasure?  Original O-I Exp when it kept up with mediums, climbed hills like a homesick angel and murdered everything.

Yup; that would be my take too. Or to peg it to an even more specific point, when they introduced the scorpion g.
