The Mighty Conqueror

Recommended Posts

So I've been cruising this section and I noticed that there isn't a discussion thread about the tier 9 British heavy yet, so I figured I'd start one.

The tank is of special interest to me as I'm currently grinding hard to get it, so any information you lot can give me about how to play it etc would be great. Because of this however, I can't really contribute much to this topic as of yet :smug:

So a little backstory about this tank:

Development of the tank begun in 1944 as the FV200 project was launched. These were to be a series of heavy tanks of approx. 60 tons, the main  production variant to be armed with the 20pdr. It was soon realised the centurion chassis filled the role of most of these and so the project was streamlined to produce a single heavy tank with which to support the Centurions (armed with the 17pdr at the time) in combat. To fulfil this role is must be heavier armed and armoured, and also able to keep pace with the mobile Centurions.

In 1949 however, it was decided the 20pdr was insufficient as it was already mounted on the lighter and easier to manufacture, Centurion Universal Tank. No doubt this was due to the new and intimidating IS series being churned out from Soviet factories. The tank was therefor to be armed with the 120mm L1A1 gun, of American origin.

As this delayed the project until 1952 the Caernarvon was put into production as a stopgap measure, with approx. 20 units produced with the 20pdr gun mounted in the Centurion Mk III turret. Eventually, with a brand new turret design, the Conqueror rolled off the production line where it served with honour for a few years before being declared obsolete again with the advent of the L7 armed Centurions.

I'll leave it to The_Challenger and the Chieftain to give more details about the tank itself:

The Conqueror is my favorite tier 9 heavy. I have ~2.7 or ~2.8k DPG in mine.

I spend most of the first half of the game hiding behind other tanks as a 2nd line support. I line up behind my E-100s, my M103s, etc and poke out after they take a shot.

Once the game is settled down a bit and very few tanks are left on each side, I'll use my gigantic HP pool and DPM to push into wounded enemies.

Your assets are your L1A1 gun's accuracy/DPM, and your pretty damn amazing HP pool. If you conserve it early, you just have way more poker chips to work with than anyone else later. Your downsides are pretty much your lack of armor anywhere, so you don't want to be taking any fire early.

The Conqueror is one of my favorite tanks in the game. It's a pretty mediocre tank except for its fantastic gun. I think of the tank as a platform for the L1A1 and not much else. It's an L1A1 on tracks, and as such I tend to play it more as a TD but with more HP. The tank excels in sniping due to it's pinpoint accuracy and extraordinary aim time, but those can also be used to your advantage at close ranges by acquiring and targeting weakspots much quicker than other tanks.

I don't really have much to say on the tank that hasn't already been said in many other places. It fits my play style very well so naturally I really like it. I was "raised" in this game by German tanks, and the Conqueror fits the German myth of a large, high powered, and accurate gun better than most German tanks.

Question: I've been considering putting optics on mine instead of the Mk.2 vStab. The aimtime being 1.9, it doesn't seem like it really needs the stab. Smooth ride and snapshot as crewskills seem to be enough to have an acceptable OTM accuracy if one decides not to play Stationary Firing Battery (SFB). I want to install optics in order to be less reliant on scout support.

What do you think?

(sure as hell that the FV 215b will have optics, but I'm not sure about the Conqueror yet, please advise)

This will be interesting.....  I suck so badly with the FV215b, that I'm thinking of selling it and going back to the Conq. ( I shouldn't ever play the 215b again, it's such a drain on stats!)

My Conqueror uses Rammer, Optics, Vents. I think the same with the accuracy being as great as it is, the stabilizer isn't needed. The tank already has a pretty good 400m view range, so optics + vents I find to be a good setup. My A crew had smooth ride and snapshot, but they've since moved onto kicking ass and taking names in the FV215b which uses the same loadout.

It's funny you say that because so far I've been doing far better with the 215b than I did with the Conqueror. It's pretty much an exaggerated Conqueror with a lot more HP and that jives really well with me. I love the tank so much I was thinking about making a new thread for it.

Oops, sorry for the double post. I forgot WoTLabs doesn't do the automerge thing.

Thank you very much!

I use vstab, vents, rammer, but I can understand vstab, optics, rammer.

I think it lives up to it's name well when played right. I don't think I would have the patience to stomach another grind and through the bunch of slow tanks (tier 5 - 7). Also, from many people's comment, I don't do well with slow tanks.

I think I have enough tier 9s for now... *looks at my M46, IS-8, E-75, M103*

That said, you guys mention the Conqueror is a superb sniper with fat HP pool. Does the M103 play similarly to it?

KraftLawrence has it spot-on.... While some folks may rage on you for not "being a heavy", ignore them, remora off of those tanks that can take a hit and put out the pain while keeping your health pool safe... Sadly it took me 200+ games to figure this out and I still cannot reliably avoid being stupid in this tank.  That being said, when I get it right, games go SOOO well..

I run optics, rammer, vstab.  I chose optics over vents as with the improvements to camo lately, I've been surprised far too often and in tier 10 games I don't care for that much. :)  However, that may be a simple example of me being in the wrong place at the wrong time.  I'm on a vision control kick lately though, to help me be less bad@tanks.

This thing is my favorite tier 9 so far. My damage per game is sitting at 2000 right now. Like you guys said, you cant play this thing frontline. I had a game on Live Oaks where I spawned on the south spawn and went and sat on the hill while the bigger guys like IS-7s, E-100s went to town and lit everyone up. I ended up spitting out 14 hits and 6k total damage.

Pubbies have no idea the power brit heavies have, all I hear is "waa waa my caernervon sucks, its alpha is too low" "waa waa, I cant take a hit in my conqueror." "waa waa, my black prince cant compete with any other tank."

I take those tears and use them to lubircate my barrel and rip them apart.

This made me grin. Its so true.

Hello Everyone

I am resurrecting this thread because it has some good discussion about equipment on the Conqueror. I just got this tank (1 game so far, 1st mastery badge), after a very enjoyable run with the Caernavon.

Currently I am using V-Stab and the rammer, which I dont see as up for debate. I shoot a lot on the move with the Caernavon and I imagine I will do the same with the Conq. The better reload is awesome as well.

I am wondering about the third slot:

Optics: I used these on the Caern because I use them on my meds. Didnt really thought a lot about it, because i dont see Caern as a keeper (too ugly).

Vents: Making all stuff very slightly better.

Binoculars: Since I usually engage other tanks either very close, when i am moving all the time, or very far, when i stay still anyway, I am wondering about replacing the Optics with Binos. Would spot people in bushes.

Anyway, might try each option for a few games, and post opinions, but I am curious what everyone else thinks.

Thanks

Verts should be kept to minimise exposure. No matter how good your gun handling is, you want to spend as little time poking in front of your enemy's gun as possible. I like optics over vents because I like being able to operate independently and not depend on my pubbies to spot whoever is shooting me from a bush. This is even more important at the endgame. Binocs is not that useful.

i am going vert, rammer, optics and oh boy this thing is good. 7.4k dmg yesterday and a win in a 32% game c:

I can't believe how shit this tank is:

- every shot into front = ammo rack

- every shot into turret = dead loader/gunner

- every shot anywhere on tank = pen

And worst thing the pubbies know it, they don't even aim for the usual weak spots, they just shoot at you and they pen.

Just bad...

havent got the conqueror, however i really do want it but for some reason i just cant enjoy the caernavon i can live with the low alpha, frontal ammo rack and what else but for some reason i just the fact that since your in a heavy you have to be in the frontline with the other heavys which is something the british heavys shouldnt do.

I am not that impressed with this tank. It doesn't pass my "would I rather be I a different tank" test. Always would choose the 103. Gun handling just isn't that much improved and armor is noticeably worse. Hoping that the fv215b is worth it.

I guess I'm weird then, because I am loving the Conqueror.

i think anyone is probably considered weird if they love the British tanks But hey i guess we a loveable bunch, though one love we can do without is arty they just love screwing our days up.
