Centurion Mk. 7/1 Appreciation Thread

Recommended Posts

What do you guys do in your Cent 7/1s when you end up on Hidden Village?

I don't like going North East (village) because it tends to end up with my hull being turned into swiss cheese. Camping at spots like C5 and E9 offers you hulldown, but I feel like I'm going to sit there being useless until an idiot wanders into my line of sight.

Going middle and playing the ridge seems like a good idea with a tank with a sturdy turret, but on this map means that everyone on the North East half of the map is going to be trying to shoot at you, AND you need allies in the village to make sure you don't get shot in the side.

I've tried going South West with the heavies and armored TDs a few times, but in tier 9 and 10 matches people are usually smart enough to use cover and their armour. The opportunities to get shots in people are scared and I don't find this the tank to push and be aggressive when the enemy has tier 10 heavies and TDs waiting.

Lastly, from South spawn, G7 gives you shots into city with cover, but sitting there again makes me feel useless and doing nothing but damage farming without influencing the map.

So, what do you guys do?

Can't think of exact times I've played with this tank on Hidden Village but with other med/lightly armoured tanks with gun depression I go centre, from the southern spawn I tend to hang back near the farm house closer to the underside of the cliff which prevents you from being too exposed from the town.

If there are friendlies in town pushing enemy back you can move further up to the centre mid ridge and support them.

A bit easier (safer) to go centre from the Northern spawn though and if I'm one of few top tiers I may even be tempted to go mountainside flank and hull down behind rocks.

I don't see why you wouldn't just go the heavy route and support them, that's how I win battles normally in my meds. Just go up to them rocks on the little hill and use your depression and pen.

I usually go middle with the 7/1, anywhere with ridges is the tanks natural ground, you need decent view range though so at least optics. Think with skills I have about 480 and that way I can spot the base campers. Depends though on your village tanks whether they push or fall back. If they loose village side or dint go at all I fall back to the ramps that connect either end of the very with middle and either support my heavies or snipe the enemy coming through the village.

Ummm, still going with stock turret but this thing is unreliable. Sure it bounces good deal of shots but some stuff just goes trough... What is maximal penetration that I can bounce with mantlet most of the time?

The turret is really unreliable but can bounce high pen shots. I just treat it as an RNG roll whether it bounces or not. The 51mm strip on top is autobounce if shooting slightly down but is a weakspot otherwise and overmatched by really high calibre guns. The turret cheeks are basically paper. The ring of the mantlet overlapping with the turret front is pretty thick but high pen shots (270+) go through. There are specific hard points on the mantlet since it is not of even thickness. The whole thing is pretty wonky.

It worked on Centurion 1, but tier higher,... Not working reliable as on tier 8.

The 7/1 had a stronger turret before the changes from the HD model, and I believe the Mk 1 still has the pre-HD/pre-nerf turret. In any case, going up a tier with equal armour is always going to result in decreased effectiveness.

A Centurion I penned the overlapping zone on the edge of my mantlet where both mantlet and turret face stack with AP a couple days ago. Turret is just shit, it produces troll bounces and not much more. Most of it is effectively ~160mm with a few bounce zones comprising of maybe a third of the surface, and the top slab is close to autobounce angle but not close enough. If you have an elevation advantage is will auto, but mostly it's garbage and worth ~150mm.

This shows you exactly how badly the fucked the tank over in the HD change: http://ftr.wot-news.com/2014/04/03/test-9-0-t-3485-and-centurion-7-armor-changes/

This seems to be the only tank I can consistently do well in...Got 2 marks and almost a higher DPG than my Batchat...So what are some other good "comfort tanks" that I can do well in?

If you enjoy the 7/1, you might like the Conqueror. (And by track the 4202 and 215b). Both tanks are more of a chaisniping support role and have great penetration for tier. The Conq also has really amazing gun handling and decent reload for a 120mm gun on a tier 9 heavy.

^ Conqueror has an even more unreliable turret and less gun depression.

As for the 7/1 turret it's troll, not reliable, go look in tank inspector, some places are like 130mm, some are like 400mm. Well that is the mantlet, turret cheeks won't bounce anything but tier 7 guns,

HD re-work actually made the roof better because it got a better angle to it, if you are using your gun depression then the roof is almost always auto-bounce.

You also got more angle on the UFP so that bounces a lot more than it did, again especially if using some gun depression, face hug a T54 whilst you reload and with it's gun depression and low size it will struggle to pen the front of the a Cent 7/1.

The 7/1's upper plate was slightly buffed from the HD rework. Maybe ~10mm effective? It's not much but noticeable.

While facehugging a T-54 may work, I fear that if that is the best option, something must have gone horribly wrong somewhere along the line. Even pubbies know how to press 22 nowadays, and the T-54's DPM eats the 7/1. The low profile of the T-54 may also mean that some of your shots may go into the turret and bounce as well.

Well yeh I wouldn't go looking for fight with a T-54, but it can be done if things don't go correctly. A lot of T-54's are played badly and a lot of payers think they can yolo rush things in them.

Also DPM is only effective if you make shots pen and if the T54 is using AP the 7/1 can bounce enough close up to negate that DPM advantage.

Plus I'm like 90% sure that the 7/1's gun depression is enough to shoot straight down into the T-54's UFP.

But ideally you keep them a long way away.

The Cent 7's UFP is the same as the T-54s... same thickness, same angle.

For what it's worth, it accelerates and turns a lot better with the top engine & tracks. It's still capped at 40km/h, but it gets there a lot easier.

That being said, I'd still go for the 105mm first (you can postpone grinding the tracks if you're willing to fit the suspension equipment)

Really enjoying this tank now that I have adapted to it. I think my biggest problem was trying to hull down and expect to bounce. I abuse the crap out of terrain in this thing but minimize exposure, always baiting shots, moving between shots and just generally giving low % shots when I can. Doing this has increased the amount of bounced shots because people take low % shots or rush to shoot while I'm briefly exposed.

The view range and very solid gun can deliver so much damage over a game or spot for a ton of damage. I never feel like I can't contribute in this thing with the exception of a few maps I suck at.

I thought I love E75 and T54 ... but now .... .. I keep coming back to the Cent 7/1 ..... it fast enough that i can get to places .... but slow enough that nuub like myself don't yolo to death 1 min into game :).... gun depression and so I play like a T29 ....

I am just loving it ... and since the L7 .. I love it even more.

Thank you everyone for all your feedback in this thread, it really help with spec out this tank.

I don't know, I think I'd play it more like a fast T34.

The T29 is boss in its tier with the turret, but in the T34 I'm constantly worried I'm about to get overmatched by some shitter in his IS-6.

Considering the Centurion's inconsistent turret protection, this would be the best case scenario.

So apparently the shitty HESH round ALSO gets blocked by spaced armor/track like HEAT? Just watched a replay, a tank with no armor soaks a side shot of 200 pen. Could this round be any more worthless?

HESH is just HE with more pen, so yes it's pretty terrible.  Literally the game mechanic is identical they just label the shells differently.

Every now and again, and generally after sacrificing a child, RNGesus blesses my HESH shells for the beautiful 500 rolls on turrets sides but normal they're fairly meh.

I've been using this for the WZ-111 UK mission.  And I still absolutely love it.  Had two really awesome games today, both on Swamp, which generally sucks as a map, but I actually like when I'm in my 7/1.  Its a great map for it.
