Rex & Ziddy's CoC - A Lewd New Years

Recommended Posts

Yeah, I've also started playing again after not playing since last March. I don't hate playing low tiers like I used to, and a lot of it I find is because of how badly they've fucked up tier 8+, especially tier 10. It'll only get worse with the 9.22 Russian tank additions

Impressions from the 1.0 test server:

  • Incredibly beautiful update. You're going to be blown away if you haven't played it yet. The new forest garage is a breath of fresh air, too. The only new visual that annoys me is the grainy anti-aliasing - 1.0 has far more detailed and small textures/models, especially on foliage, and the anti-aliasing gets a bit spoiled when the camera is moving. This should be less of a problem on larger monitors, but it's certainly noticeable at 1920x1080.

  • ...but a very buggy one. Almost everything is just visual/audio bugs, but there's a lot of them. Flickering shadows, silently receiving damage, ceaseless reload noise etc. There's a lot of this kind of stuff wargaming has to burn through before release date. I wouldn't be too surprised if the planned march release is held back until april or even may, just going by what still needs to be done.

  • From my experience, ranged combat/camo abuse is coming back in a smol way. Some maps have been flattened out, which allows longer sight & engagement ranges. TDs in particular will be (even) more popular. We're still well within corridor territory, but you can do something other than brawl a bit more often now.

  • ...but the actual map design of some of these reworked maps is still WG-tier, so that "something other than brawl" will be camp, especially for pubbies. As usual the best spots are still ten seconds from spawn. It's really a mixed bag. I like longer engagement ranges and I think unicums will do better because of them, but I've got my doubts if the gameplay has actually been improved. We'll have to see.

Until WG addresses T8 & T10 balance and the failure of the new template-based MM, I'm not going be too excited for the future of the game. With that said, I'm happy 1.0 is at least an improvement over live. All too often WoT patches end up being one step forward and two steps back.

Hello Rexxie.

It's been a long time and I just want to pop by and check if everything is good and well over on the NA side of world of tanks? I can see you are still active on WotLabs - so I assume you are still playing semi-regularly? :3

What tanks are you enjoying driving around in at the moment, if any in particular?

Hey waterwar! I dont actually play, I just keep tabs on the forum to see if anything is going on. I'm holding off until an update piques my interest! How about you, do you still play?

So the graphical update didn't pique your interest? Because that is what got me back to the game after a 15 months hiatus.
I had been walking around in a nostalgic haze for a few months, thinking back on the grand days of WotLabs and the social shenanigans in the game with my clan, LAVA. Then I saw that they updated the graphics to catch up to the more modern games, and I decided to plunge back in to see if the game was any better than when I left. Also I had a little itch for some short competitive games of some sort, which WoT fits perfectly.

I must admit that I actually enjoy the game a good bit now. I like almost all of the changes that they've made with the 3-5-7 MM, change of the MM of light tanks and arty rework. I still find RNG to be a bit annoying at times, but I'm not too bothered by it. Taking a 15 month break made me realise that no-one gives a damn about your stats out in the real world. So it makes it easy for me to just pick a tank and zoom around and have fun without really giving many damns about how well I (don't) play.

When did you stop playing? Any particular reason, or just the game growing a bit stale?

I think a large part of it is the social aspect - my clan is dead, almost everyone I played with has quit, my server is apparently on life support, pubs are dead silent now, and the forum isn't exactly lively. Sometimes I'll log in, but not having a community makes it difficult to stick around. I like to say that I'm just waiting for an update, but I think I'm hoping the game will just feel more alive one day. Probably not going to happen, though!

Glad you're enjoying yourself after 1.0! I think a lot of people, me included, like to keep around a low commitment competitive title around. That's what originally got me hooked for sure!

Yea, the "supercum" community is a shadow of it's former self unfortunately. You guys on NA always struggled a bit with lower server populations, so I suppose now it is just even more noticeable. The EU servers seems to be doing well with plenty of people playing. I saw 300k+ people online yesterday evening which surprised me!

First time playing since 2018! Mostly pleasant! I'm really impressed at how much better the new/free player experience is. There's still a lot I can complain about and some things are obviously worse than when I left, but I'm having fun playing with a new player, which is a first for me.

Oh I'm a girl now. I cant see my health bar when my tits are covering the screen, so I always just assume it's infinite and yolo in on every tank I play. It doesn't work. I don't care.

If you're gonna be carrying around a bag of meat for the rest of your life, you might as well like it. (but it's really great to hear that you have found a body that you are comfortable and happy in)

Also good to hear that you are enjoying tanks again. Having been playing since the beta days (10 years now!), I think WoT is in the best shape it has ever been (both gameplay and overall experience including F2P). No, it's not perfect and yes, the fixes to a lot of complaints seem blindly obvious to us but that doesn't dimish the massive improvements WG have made.

im actually interested in what aspects of the game make you guys think the F2P experience is better?  @dustygator @Rexxie

in my mind is seems like F2P experience would be a terrible experience, but maybe im wrong.

*Cranky old man*  Back in my day...

Grinding/Tank progression/Free XP

It used to be that the only way to skip stock grinds/garbage tanks without gold was to slowly earn 5% of battle XP.  Free XP conversions never went on sale. Pay @ 25 to 1 gold or GTFO.

-> Now

  • Daily missions can give out 1.5k+ free XP. Some campaign and event missions give it out as well (and scavenger hunt gave out  45k a month, all you had to do was play two battles)
  • Blueprints everywhere. Holiday 2019 gave out enough to skip an entire tier X grind (sans modules)... for every single nation.
  • x5 XP boosters. At one point I had 75+ of them and avoided playing elite tanks/started new lines just so I wouldn't waste them.
  • Personal & clan reserves give valuable boosts as well and are handed out like candy.
  • Crew XP is shortcut via girls/0-skill (I have 13 sitting in my barracks that I don't know what to do with) and skill books (yes, big skill books are a credit sink, but small ones get handed out pretty often and it doesn't take that many to get sixth sense)

Premium Economy

Benefit of having premium is bigger than ever, but there are so many ways to get some of it from free. Twitch Prime loot, tank rewards, free event/battle pass rewards, etc. It's especially good for people who only play occasionally (weekends, etc) as you don't fall into the trap of wasting premium on days you wouldn't normally play.

Credits are now the main time waster (instead of XP), but boosters/FL/both make it really easy. Earlier this year, I would just time my Twitch Prime loot redemption on the weekend of FL, pop some of the 200+ 50% credit boosters I had sitting around and shit out 1M credits per hour.

Sales (on tech tree tanks/consumables/equipment) are less frequent but are easily managed with planning. I rarely pay full price on any of those.

Premium Tanks

Probably the least improvement, but still better than before. Before, tech tree premiums often went on 30% gold discount often but getting premium tanks for free (above say tier V) was hard.

Now, it's more divided. The most OP premiums are locked behind the cash only online shop (tourny/CW gold won't get you a foot in the door). But, there are so many ways to get useful tanks for fun/credit grinding.

  • Tank rewards has pretty much handed out every premium tank under tier VIII out by now.
  • You can cheese recruit system to get that valuable first tier VIII prem.
  • Marathons have given access to very meta (Renegade/EBR/Bourrasque/T-44-100) tanks if you are willing to no-life it.
  • Black Market has offered useful prems (off the top of my head Caern AX/Lansen/Black Dog) for totally achievable credit cost
  • Trade-in system does cost some gold but lets you get rid of trash power-creeped tanks.
  • Bond shop has useful tanks.
  • FL/Ranked/Campaigns give to you access to sexy AF rewards tanks

Old man yells at cloud

Is F2P a fun experience for a completely new player? Probably not, but more because the game has a very steep learning curve rather than WG extorting you every step you try to take. WG hands out almost everything you need to have fun in the game for free, if you are willing to play enough games.

For transparency, I've spent ~250 since 2013 (100% F2P between beta reset and 2013, with breaks in 2012/16/19)

  • ~$40 in nvidia bonus codes in 2014
  • Large gold + credits bundle ($70) in 2015
  • Rudy when it was first offered (~$30)
  • Big loot box ($99) in 2018 that got me Defender+IS-3a+SkorpG+E25+Lefefe+30k gold
  • Smallest gold bundle ($7) in 2019 for black market to top and try to get Type 59G (failed)

Ignoring everything except random battles (16k and counting), my rough math puts me at 14 cents an hour. Hard to beat that return on investment.

I've played Silver League, high level CW (earning Chieftain/907/M60) and more stronkhold time than I would like to admit. I have OP tanks that I don't even take out of the garage because they bore me, that's how good I have it in WoT.

Hating on Wot is super common around these parts, which isn't surprising given how much time some of us have sunk into the game. But I don't regret getting into this game at all. I rage and I complain but I will never take for granted the enjoyment this game has brought me over the past decade.

Dusty pretty much nailed it. The economy of modern WoT is SO much more forgiving to people who don't pay. You've got constant giveaways, missions and campaigns. A much more charitable referral system (+100% creds and XP every game for ~300 games) on top of the +15% platoon bonus, a more streamlined tech tree, and the free side of the battle pass. You just get showered in rewards and the grind doesn't really slow down until T8/9.

I will say though that yes, balance between mediocre tech tree tanks and meta premiums is beyond fucked. The playing field has never been more uneven, especially towards a newer player. I still think that actually being able to progress makes up for it, though.

The salty greens that are absolutely sure my gf is a reroll sustain me.

Must feel really awful for someone to be better than you in less than a month, guess I cant blame them.
