The VK 30.01H Glass at its finest

Recommended Posts

This is a review of the VK 30.01H the Tier 5 German Heavy tank in all but name.

This Tank is a good learning step into the world of understanding German Heavy Tanks from Tier 5-7 where you get metal boxes with flat armor but good side scraping capability.

This Tank will teach you the meaning of sniping from a distance since the long aim times of the guns and good accuracy will help you grasp the reasons why you should not brawl with long aim time guns  with a weak tank hull of only 50mm all around will cement this.

Tech Tree

Starting Point

When first arriving at the VK 30.01H from the D.W.2 the first thing you want to do this upgrade the Gun on the stock turret to the Kwk 7.5/L43  to give yourself a badly needed firepower boost since your  Kwk 7.5/L24 and Kwk 5/L60 are pitiful at this tier and are unable to penetrate the front of tier 5 heavy tanks without using gold ammo.

Next is to upgrade the tracks for 2,250 exp do not go for the engine upgrade as the Kwk 7.5/L43  will push the stock tracks close to their weight limit of 33 Tons. After getting the tracks which increases the load limit to 41 tons go for the top Turret 2,600 exp which unlocks better gun potentials for the tank.

Research the Kwk 7.5/L48 for 3,400 exp which is a minor improvement over the Kwk 7.5/L43 and is a roadblock gun to stop you getting the good guns for the tank. Then research the Kwk 7.5/L70 for 4,600 exp  to give the tank a decent sniping gun then research the engine upgrade for 1,300 exp that boosts engine power by 75 hp from 300hp -> 375hp  save yourself 5,250 exp going for the last engine upgrade since its unlocked when researching the Vk 36.01 H and it only has 25hp increase than the previous engine. you should save 9,200 exp for the 7.5 Konish gun  which offers half a round faster firing than the Kwk 7.5/L70 has 0.34 accuracy  compared to 0.35 and weighs 1 ton less than the L70.

Armor

What armor are you talking about the steel plates that hold the tank together and the crew inside nope thats not armor with a pitiful 50mm of armor all around that is flat sided this tank will not bounce shots aimed at the hull of the tank it never will unless the gods of RNG bless you with such luck that you bounce something unless they hit the 35mm front sloped plate and auto bounce off it, yes i've seen it once in a blue moon happen to me. That lower plate is your doom like the D.W.2 if you get smacked there you can catch fire and enjoy your tank burn.

The Stock Turret is a joke with its 50mm of all around armor useless in this tier don't count on the spaced armor to save your poor butt as the 80mm spaced armor has no armor behind it so if they slap rounds through there say goodbye to your gunner or loader.

QVEHFwV.png

With the upgraded turret you get better turret armour 80mm front 60 sides and 60 rear but the mantlet is still the same 80mm spaced armour with no armour behind it, but note the side of the front of the turret with 120mm thick armour if you can get them to shoot the front sides of your turret so that they hit the 40mm side spaced armour, around the mantlet and the 120mm red strip and the 80mm front plate behind it you have an effective armour thickness of 240mm but that is such a small spot. That is why they shoot you through the 80mm mantlet. Note the front bottom side of the turrets with the plate angling inwards that is a nice trap-shot.

Shots from the side will damage the ammo rack, the ammo rack is really fragile

How to Play

Stay back and play as a turreted TD never show your hull to your enemies only expose your turret for its the best armour you have so far and the gun depression of the tank of -8 will allow hull down tactics. Another  tactic is the possibility of side scraping since you have large tracks that add up to 70mm thick side armour but you expose the engine weak spot with only 30mm spaced armour protecting the engine hitbox. When the enemy team is weakened use your HP 660 as a meatshield to finish off weakened enemies preferably from a safe distance. Note that with only 20mm of hull top armour this tank takes poorly to arty hitting it.

Loadout

Since my heavy crew lacks skills I went with

-Gun Rammer

-Binos to make use of the 360 metre view range for sighting targets

-ToolBox for fixing the tracks its best to save repair kits for the gun or engine or ammo rack

-when the crew is trained in Repair I'll replace the toolbox with a Enhanced Gun Laying drive to boost the aiming speed

- coated optics is a good replacement choice for binos

-vents if you feel like it

Skills

Get repair for the whole Crew first

then swap it on the commander for sixth sense follow it up with recon then take your pick

Loader should go with repair then safe storage then take your pick

Driver should go with repair then either preventive maintenance or off road driving then take your pick

Gunner should go with Repair then designated target for that extra 2 seconds of getting shots off on distance targets or Deadeye for the increased critical damage then take your pick

Radio Operator should go for repairs then Situational Awareness to boost view range then take your pick.

Well thank you for listening to my opinion of this tank and I hope for constructive feedback.

I've Got Pictures now

I'll have replays up later if WOT Replays accepts 8.9 replays

This is a Tier 6 game where I learnt that speculatory shots wasted my potential damage output, and those stupid pubbies can't kill that KV-1S for crap should have finished him off earlier to stop him ganking 3 of our tier 6s

This is a Tier 5 game where I got my Ace Tanker Badge for this tank I had to do some close range fighting and used hull down tactics when defending the base

This is From a tier 7 game on Westfield : I played a sniper support role getting shots on enemies from a distance

Okay about those Replays, well I went full Retard thinking they were corrupted because i couldn't upload them to WOT Replays. But I did manage to get a really good replay yesterday

5x weekend for halloween on SEA?

Are you shitting me Wargaming?

5x weekend on EU as well.

WG hates you yankee capitalist pig.

(On topic: I got one of these to 'sploit the tier drop and get a free 3002M, but I reckon I can use it to farm a crew up for later german heavies).

A nice, thorough review of a tank that suffered a lot when being reclassified in my opinion. I sold it after the 8.8 drop, and your review doesn't make me regret it in the slightest. I guess I'll just have to live with a hole in the German tech tree at tier IV and V.

Oh and I think the SEA x5 event lasts until the 7th...

I have liked this tank a lot.   It is so accurate and pens most everything you shoot at so it feels good to play and fits my style of play which is frequently sitting back and picking off people :).

After messing about with this for a handful of rounds (had a free one due to the tier change), I can't think of anything that the Pz4 doesn't do better other than having an L/70 or Konisch, and that doesn't come anywhere near making up for the rest of it.  Give the thing an L/43 and a change in hit points and it'd fit right in as a tier 4 heavy.

The mobility absolutely kills this tank, even with crew skills and equipment.  The gun depression generally seems fine, but you have pretty much zero chance of getting anywhere in time to use it.

If it traded the top 3 guns (Konisch, L/70, 105 derp) for a noticeable increase in mobility it would be vastly more effective even though that'd leave you with a slower, less armored Pz4 or Pz 3/4.

I really have no idea what WG was thinking.   I get the impression that the devs sort of half-assed this one.

A one-sentence review of this tank would have to be, "Driving the Vk 30.01H makes me want to punch kittens".

I know but you got the D.W.2 at tier 4 occupying the tier 4 Heavy slot same tank Chassis different turrets, that tank could use the Kwk 7.5/L43 or Kwk 7.5/L48 and be fine as a tier 4 heavy Tank with a hard hitting gun. This 30.01H needs a Armour upgrade to make it different from the D.W.2, 70-80mm frontal Armour will make the tank more bearable

It felt frustrating for me but performed better than it felt like, because solid gun + surprisingly good camo (roughly comparable to a T-54).  It really is only a heavy in terms of movement speed.  I transferred a crew from a VK 28.01 so I still had some camo skill, which is probably better than repair if you have a dedicated crew for this tank.

Comparing it to the DW doesn't help - that tank is every bit as bad and suffers from the same level of dev trolling and/or indifference.  The DW guns are pretty crap on the Pz3, they're utterly awful on the DW.

I can't really see them giving this enough armor to make it relevant given how slow it is.  You'd need frontal armor like a KV (not in a million years will they give it similar side protection), and even then the AT-2 would do a much better job at being a barely-mobile brick even with the 6-pounder, due to it's all-around protection.

An example of a "glass" heavy tank is the AMX M4 1945. VK3001H is not glass.

Just got this tank a couple days ago, and I disagree with everything you said except for sidescraping.

The armor is fine so long as you protect the LFG. I eat shots in my tracks all the time. The armor is not as strong as a KV-1 but you can still bounce a lot of shots.

Most of the mediums around your tier can't brawl with you. You have better, more reliable penetration and solid alpha, and the tank is fairly mobile for a heavy for its tier.

If you hang back and play like a turreted TD, you will miss out on a lot of potential damage dealt. You want to be close enough to the front lines that you'll get early shots on targets.

Just be careful if you have no spotters in front of you.

I've gotten 8 Ace Tankers in 60 games, which is my best ratio on any new tank.

I love this tank. It's got my (so far) only Mastery Badge (and that was in a tier 6 battle). I will say that this thing is a beast in tier 5 battles- the 50mm of armor, if you angle it, can bounce a lot of shots (my best was bouncing a pz.sfl.ivc's long 88) and the l/70 can murder most tanks in its tier and above. I did try the 7.5 Konisch (Waffe in the tech tree), but found the lack of HE to be a pain, since it's an excellent round for exploiting breakthroughs, when you can hammer rear armor and artillery. I've gotten more breakthroughs in this tank than any other I've played, but it isn't a brawler. Get through lines by maneuvering and flanking (especially with advanced suspension, this thing's actually got a decent turn of speed), and then hit them in the rear. Having said that, it is lacking in armor at higher tiers, and at tier 7, sidescraping and/or hull-down is a must to survive.

I've gone back to the Waffe and my stats took a huge jump. Now I can actually hurt tier 7s! Woot! (new PR for this tank? soloing a full-HP IS!)

only thing this thing comparable to a T-54 is the gun depression, which is trolling bad

I apologize for the stupid question. Can someone explain to me why the WN8 on this tank jumped up 100 points while the average damage per game is actually dropped to 320 per game?

Getting bored of grinding credits in tiers 8-10 so I think I might pick up this thing again for some casual 5's action that might break up the monotony. I have a 3-skill German heavy crew in the barracks doing nothing =/

Shall I drag a KV-1 buddy along with me to act as my meatshield? lol

Just got this, going for E100. Wandered if i should do the heavies or the meds. Sounds sort of like the PTA which I am also doing now. Not terrabad but lacking?

I forgot how awful lower tiers are. Two games in it and I already regret my decision based solely on that, lol.

Got past it, didn't like anything about it except the gun (konische)

The 3601 is similar but is faster, has twice the armor. Same gun, which is ok.. Unlocked the good turret, wondering if i should try the short 88 but the lack of pen scares me. its already unlocked, may as well try it for a few matches. Overall the Vks seem shitty now :( Can't wait for tiger, but that's getting nerfed apparently. Grrr.

I've been running it with the derp and meeting with limited success.  Is this thing even a viable derper?
