How to play IS-6

Recommended Posts

Is Is-6 like  uber aggressive, rambo tanque? I play my tanks like that, and troll bounces/stronk sidescraping is gud. I am considering getting it, expecting a christmas sale

IS6 is one of the premier bully tanks in the game.  Very few lower tiers can pen you consistently (it gives Russian 122s fits).  It doesn't fight up tiers as well as something like the FCM, even with gold, as its armor is merely decent against 9s and the gun doesn't make up for that.  But for beating up on inferior/low-pen competition, it has very few peers.

1.  Reroll.

2.  Play only IS-6, spend about 350 gold per game.

3.  Be on top against oranges in mediums.

4.  Get a long chain of stupidly lucky rolls.

5.  ???

6.  PROFIT

You weren't even making a pretense of properly angling or even aiming.  Next time do it solo brah, and leave that gold at home:

Nice game, so jelly.

If u dont mind, i highjack your thread for a bit.

Because since i bought mine 3 days ago, im super frustrated with this, the MM i usually get is either Tier 8 with lots of heavies, or T9, and i really just dont know how u guys make that gun work. Im pretty sure im playing it completely wrong. Of course i bounce a lot of stuff shooting me (Type 59s pen me so badly btw, and i see them a lot), but vs Tier9 i feel nearly completely useless. After the first 30 games or something i really thought i prolly just load gold, but meh. Maybe i shouldnt go to the usual chokepoints then and go "hunting" for mediums and low tier, but i dont think this the solution.

I dropped some replays, if anyone can be bothered, i really donk hardcore in this thing, and thats just after i finally had the feeling of getting the hang of that game, brought my 60d WR up to green/blue, WN7 green, playing lots of T6 mediums and Hellcat. Then Okeano suggested getting an IS-6, cos money was getting tight, in case you guys wonder why i bought it in the first place, he said looking at my stats i should be fine, well, obviously im not. :D

Komarin, i go island (im really not used to island tbh, i rarely go there), my teammates melt around me, i go on a stupid yolo mission for that IS-3, then get overrun.

Murovanka, first 2/3 of my team goes east, so i decide to go west, even tho i feel uncomfortable poking west hills cos of gundepression, nobody moves and i expect lots of stuff already to be sitting in A2/coming down 1?2 line. So im a sitting duck not knowing what to do, because of the horrible games before without penning shit i immediatly load gold for the IS-3/6, and even then i totally derp and bounce most of the shots. It hurts to watch this again btw. The shot in the end, im not used to these type of guns obv, so i thought "ENOUGH AIM!" and donk it in the ground. -.-

http://wotreplays.com/site/484363?secret=16587112a9aa2712f6e904b62318e9b8

Mines, again, after i experienced some bad situations where something like a T32/29 could shoot me all day long over a ridge and i couldnt cos of gundepression, i go town. Well, my team ofc needed my "help" a lot more on the hill, so i again question my decisionmaking, of course in the end get flanked by that 50 100.

http://wotreplays.com/site/484366?secret=16587112a9aa2712f6e904b62318e9b8

Desert, i think i should'nt even be there in the first place, watch as my team dies, cant or dont help them, then get owned by that centurion.

http://wotreplays.com/site/484376?secret=16587112a9aa2712f6e904b62318e9b8

Northwest, i advance until i meet the Type 59 and T-44, then im not sure if i should go in or hang back, im worried about side shots from basically everywhere on the left, and then again, i bounce, and bounce, yes i shot the Types turret, im bad. The shot on this IS-8 down below from the high ground really took the last bit of confidence, in any other tank i played up until this point i didnt have to worry about penning an opponent from the top.

Overall i completely lack the feeling for when to be aggressive and when not, i feel like a die in absolutely stupid locations, and all this while not being able to do any dmg to other heavies, hell i even bounced T-44s and Type 59s all the time. -.-

23% WR for today, avg winchance was something around 38%, so mm wanted to be a bitch too, but still, in my Hellcat or T-34-85 or even my T1 Heavy i dont feel as useless as in this thing. Even more embarassing when people post "OMG IS-6 SO OP" threads all the time.

Halp? :(

EDIT:

heres another recent one, same thing, on hill on Mines from south, WZ-120 sits left and pins me down, im afraid to poke for the heavies in front of me cos he'll shoot me in the side. If this was a T29 or any american heavy, i would have been more agressive, maybe russians are not for me.. :P

Also, he pens me easily, i of course cant pen his turret. If you could tell me how you would have approached this match, that would be awesome.

Quite impressive, as always....but Youtube and the replay sites are full of those successful yoloing IS-6 battles...

However I´d really be more interested in some videos/hints/guides about driving the IS-6 properly in tier 9 battles, especially on those open maps like Prokhorovka, Malinovka, El Hallouf, Sand River, etc...

These are the battles I am often struggling with because I can´t play out the tank´s strengths under those conditions. Playing aggressively results in early knockout, driving passive style leads to a bad score...

it doesnt matter if you're in a tier 9 battle.  IS-6 is so good in pairs or 3s because of the fear they inspire, especially when people have XVM and see your stats.  I play the exact same way in any tier battle and achieve successful results.  And if you see an E-75, aim for its cupola.  Far range?  Still aim its cupola, or keep shooting it to make the driver uncomfortable, it's all about inspiring fear.  2 IS-6s can hold down 3 E-75s, why?  Because who is going to attack into 2 superunicums paired together in IS-6s?

In that situation against the WZ-120, just back off.  Relocate somewhere else, once the WZ-120/those heavies gets cocky and do something stupid, capitalize and punish them for it.

If you're at a disadvantage only you realize, keep attacking.  If you're at a disadvantage both you and your enemy realize, stop.

Shit... Now I feel bad. Elly, the gun is not friendly so it takes a while to get use to. You should be looking to bully lower tier tanks. Pack some APCR rounds. Angling is huge factor in IS-6 and you should look through some angling guides around here.

I have four Tier 8 premiums and the IS-6 is, by far, my least favorite or successful.   I simply lose all confidence bouncing all the shots I bounce.   I aim well even and the thing bounces.   It's very frustrating for me.   And given I'm not pro at angling, I wind up taking too much damage and being a non-factor.   I play much better in support, so I take the IS-6 as the tank I need to improve in to validate I am actually getting better at all aspects of the game.

I'm just in no rush as this thing is a nightmare for me :).

This story sounds all so familiar... I once new this tanker that bought a T34 WAY before he was ready for it.

What it did do for me... errr this tanker...was fast-track him into learning the ways of hull down and side scraping.

I'd love to form an IS6 platoon with you when my internet is back seeing ESA and BanzaiBonsai are MIA for good.

But knowing Rogers, thats not for another 2 months at least.

Plat me dude, when I get the IS-6 from this event's reward. You know where I live, I got wifi, lol.

I'm a heavy tank expert and even at the replays people are posting as some of the best here, I see flaws and stuff I would've done better.

Once I get my hands in an IS-6, the world will never be the same....

As I can not watch the OP from work, but I can watch StranaMechty's video on YouTube, I have to say, nice. I did notice a couple shots in the beginning that left the enemy with <50 health I think if I read it right. Those shots always piss me off. I also wanted to rage when the KV-5 ignored the Lowe to shoot at the afk arty. Meh, maybe others would prefer he did that, but it bothers me he didn't focus on the active threat.

Good video Strana. Moar.

Bonus: <50 health makes an appearance, but perhaps not as you would expect.

Shit... Now I feel bad.

haha, dont. ;)

Im learning a lot in this tank, and it at least absolutely confirmed my tendency to like tanks with lots of gundepression, im loving my T1 heavy atm, and i really enjoyed T29 on the test server. I just find myself so often in hull down situations, that i hate when i have to expose all of my hull, example K line on redshire, i like being there, but all the ridgelines and hills make me wonder how someone makes something without depression work there.

I see wat u did there. :P And i agree, Tier5/6 is still lots of just shooting somewhere and penetrating, i need to get better at actually shooting weak spots.
