Getting Better – The Brutal, Simple, and Timely Way by Kewei

This is for discussing Getting Better – The Brutal, Simple, and Timely Way by Kewei

Please forgive any editing/formatting errors in this one: I'm sick as a dog today and will go back and fix things when I'm more clear-headed.

+1 to RBS for doing this while sick. And just for doing this.

-1 to Kewei because both my sister and my boss are deaf. You bastard.

+1 though because it's just fantastic advice.

So Kewei (aka A_Codpiece or something like that here in the WoTLabs forums) evens out to a zero.

Interestingly, I've been thinking about this exact issue recently. I've posted here before that I don't want to pad my stats. That's worthless (to me). I want to get better at the game, and watching my stats tells me how I need to get better, where, how, etc. I just purchased the E3 a week or so ago. Have a lot to learn about it, but absolutely thoroughly enjoy using it. So I may use that as my go-to tank as the Codpiece suggests. If my stats go down, so be it. I will learn. That is what is most important. And eventually the stats will go up ... theoretically. I'll have the E4 in a week or so as well. I am assuming somewhat similar playstyles; if so I'll use both and learn.

BTW, best quote in the entire article, which is something that I had not thought about:

... everything you learn in highest tiers can be used in lower tiers, but only part of what you learn in lower tiers can be used in the highest tiers.

Thank you, this is actually brilliant advice that I've accidentally done... It seems to be working ok.

You forgot to press F7 to activate the flotation devices.

I highly take this advice, I even started doing this a month ago knowing I have to do more high tier battles just to fight with more experienced players. So far, it's going very well for me. :D

A solo-ist for my first 8000 games, i can confirm this works, only if you have the will and determination to get better, or else this will just turn you into a bitter bitch like Hardest

Or, if you're in an American medium, activate your snorkel.

The don't seal club advice is actually very legitimate.

fuck the hellcat/t49 to "learn", all it does is create people who have good stats in t49 but suck dick in tier 10 (lol 1500 dpg e5) because abusing vision against 50% crew tanks teaches you so much.

I recently "forced" my gf to play this game for a bit, so instead of doing like low tier shit, I told her to play my e-25/t54 while I duo platooned using someone elses account. In a very short time she learned a shit ton because of the very punishing environment, probably could managed a 55% w/r solopub in the 54..

but then "lol this game sucks dick" because all gurls want to do is play lux in LoL

Totally agree. I've gotten into the bad habit of warming up by playing my x2 in the T40 and then the x2 in the T49 for my first two games and then moving to higher tiers and I feel like all it does is make me feel like I can get away with more and set unreal expectations (given my current skill level) at tiers 8-10.

Even platooning I feel like I get sloppy sometimes or that I can get away with more both because hell, I know I have other good players to carry me and because I feel like I sometimes have to race them for kills and damage instead of going at my own pace.

Yeah, fuck you Kewei, do you even KNOW the things deaf people have to deal with? The difficulty is unheard of... so to speak.

SRS Question though:  With this in mind, would it be worth it to create a FailRoll?  A re-roll account specifically to punish myself with?  Solo-pub only, mediocre line only (Maybe just go up the Japanese Line) and just Hammer my face against the wall till I get better?

No, since you'll still be at low tiers with new account.

I do agree mostly with Kewei for blue and purples. I see many of them try to "game the MM" or play OP tanks just to have the stats looking better while not actually improving much. But when you're purple, watching replays of elite players does more than just a case by case example. You'll be able to see and understand the reason behind their decisions and compare how that's different from what you have decided. You'll see how early they relocate when a flank is about to fall vs staying to get one more shot in. I'm at a wall in terms of skill lately, most because I've been too lazy to watch better players. I do believe there would be plenty I can learn if I actually put in the effort.

For green/yellows, replays without commentary probably won't be as helpful, but they will at least show good spots on the map. I'm still a firm believer of learning by platooning. You platoon same or similar tanks so you mirror them. My jumps in ability were from watching Youtube replays with thought process explained (theriisingsun), and then platoon with agent_smithx2 and other PBKAC where I'm forced to keep up and got to see what they're doing to put out that much damage. Things that would take you 100 games to learn solo may take just 1 game with a good player to learn.

So no, I don't agree with "go solo highest tier possible with many games as possible" for general players. If that works, people who bought tier 8 prem at the start or failed their way up tier 10s would be the best players, and the game will be filled with purples instead of reds. Learning this game is just like learning everything else. General population will learn much faster with good teacher, trainer, mentor than read books, understand the concept then blindly trying to learn yourself.

TBH, I don't know anyone who has been mentored/taught into a great player.  Everyone I know paid the iron price -- hours of dragging drooling retards to victory no matter how hard they try to fail.

I forgot to mention, this is a frustrating process to go through, and unless you're willing to suffer at first to find rewards later, you probably won't get through this.

But if you can, it's a very simple, brutal, and timely way of getting better.

Also, another thing is, most people don't jump straight to the higher tiers with the idea of getting better.

The reds at the higher tiers are the people who just drive around and shoot things without any thought for other things.

I'm sure if they played with the mindset of learning from their mistakes, they would be a great deal better.

As for teaching or mentoring being better for the general population, I'll have to concede to that, but that's mainly because the general population doesn't even know most of the basic mechanisms - so I'd still say it's better to just jump straight into it all if you've got the basics down.

Now, I learned next to nothing from watching other players or platooning, all it did was keep me stuck in a rut where I constantly had to fight others in my own team for damage and kills instead of actually fighting the other team - is my experience. But after starting to solopub again? I've been hitting new heights, like I said in the article, over 4000 DPG quite easily in T9s (E50 recently, and Object 704 in Logical_Phallacies) and touching or breaking 5000 in many T10s (T110E4 in Kewei and Object 268 in Logical_Phallacies, until my dad started playing on that account again).

+1 Seems like the article title should be "Common Pitfalls of people trying to get better at WoT".
