So far MSE is very fast and I can do full scans with it in 2 minutes.

Now as to how much protection I am really getting I don't know.

MSE is great. I've used it straight for the past 6 years with zero issues.

So i let my free avast update to the 2014 version, big mistake.

They jumped into the Win8 gui clone bandwagon and it's far more intrusive than it used to be.

Really disappointing.

Use MSE in case you press wrong link. But really the best AV is common sense. If the site doesn't look trustwhorty then don't press it

This.

all mainstream AVs are checked by real virus writers. their viruses will not be stopped.

almost all grayware is setup so that you get it without AV stopping it. AV isnt going to, nor should it. the software is actually installing, not infecting.

thats where you need anti-malware instead. the good ones are invasive to your computer. they take up a lot of CPU, etc. to handle them you need to actually do some work, add your games folder to its bypass scan list, etc.

by default, all of them that are capable of protecting you from human stupidity are invasive. if you need invasive protection, i recommend malwarebytes or ad aware. they both have active plugins for your browsers, etc, that will prevent you from doing a lot of stupid. but you do need to configure all of them to not scan your games folder.

Also another question

I want to try to make a backup of my new build, I have installed all the programs I want and set everything up exactly how I want it.  I don't want to just backup the program files I want it to reload EVERYTHING to exactly how it was before I nuked and pulled that backup back into use.  Basically a mirrored version of what's on my computer now that is working correctly, similar to factory reset on a box build computer.

I have about 150 windows updates that want to intall..and I tried getting them to work and I ended up with the blue screen of death.  I have since done a secure erase of my SSD everything is loaded on with the Asus secure erase feature in the bios.

As I was typing this I just crashed into the blue screen of death again..my computer runs so fast I didn't even have time to see what error came up...

EaseUS, it clones your hard drive making an image of it. Easy to back up, easy to restore and its all free.

I used to run AVG, but I've been running without protection ever since I got the comp I'm running now. It didn't seem to do anything other than annoy me.

I haven't lost all my money.

Yet.

Yet. :-(

Or just use ff with noscript.

Norton is utterly terrible. Never ever use it. It takes your PC and literally wraps it in bubblewrap. It overestricts everything and slows the PC down.

Meanwhile, despite my objections, my Mother bought Trend Micro titanium security. Its better than norton... BUT, I discovered that it just runnimg in the background was usimg 1/4 of my RAM by itself. I have 4GB RAM, and one day i noticed that on ilde with nothing except the task manager open, I was using 2.5GB RAM. Closing down as many background applications as possible, got it down to 2.3gb. Finally closed ternd micro, it dropped to 1.1GB. Which is about my average on idle. As such i now never have it on. But yesterday I got a ad virus, so i started it up and did a scan, well, tried to. It completely lagged the PC out, ibwas forced to miss CW because of it. i eventually force restarted the PC. The scan managed all of 14% completion in the hour it was working.

I reccomend Microsoft security essentials. Its free, i used it before trend micro, it used next to no resources, it picked up everything I had a problem with, and it could easiy run a scan inthe backgroumd while im playimg games. And it doesnt take that long to scan.

You think?

Citation needed please.

I can "confirm" this only anecdotally via my brother who 'traffics' in this stuff daily.

"shit"? Probably not.

Best? Probably not.

This is my most trusted site and they did not look at Defender in December 2013:

A quick searchshows this as the most recent time they looked at Defender in 2012

I trouble the finance minister to pay for eset for my machines. I typically disable it when playing Tanks but I cannot discern a difference.
