Crew Skills and Perks According to a Unicum by Oneechan

What is considered the main thought principle behind skills and perks, is it

 

a. Improving bad characteristics on a certain tank (e.g. make shitty traverse slightly better, T95) - Focus on improving weaknesses

b. Improving good characteristics on a certain tank (e.g. improve the view range even more, M48 Patton) - Focus on further improving strengths

A couple things on which I would like some elaboration (because I don't quite get it):

 

Contrary to what you might think, [Deadeye] actually works better with high-caliber guns rather than smaller calibers.

 

Mediums and light tanks get the biggest bonus but paradoxically benefit the least from [Clutch Braking].

 

Also, this quote about preventative maintenance seems to directly contradict the Wiki entry, so now I'm confused.

It increases your fuel tanks’ hitpoints by 25%, but it has no effect on transmission (engine) fires.

So prevent only increases the fuel tank hitpoints? From the WoT Wiki I was under the impression it would simply reduce general fire chance:

 

"The Preventive Maintenance Perk enables the Driver to reduce by 25% the chance of engine fire by preventing gas or oil leakage in the engine compartment. The effect of this Perk is cumulative with that of the reduced chance of fire provided by any purchased Automatic Fire Extinguisher premium consumable."

Welp, looks like I'm going to be doing some retraining.

 

I haven't thought of camo as a medium skill at all and safe stowage... never even considered it for a light or medium, much less as a first skill. I've worked on everything that would help with driving and shooting in mediums since I just kind of expect to be spotted most of the time it made sense to be as agile, hostile and durable (repair) as possible.

 

I do pretty well in mediums but maybe I should rethink my game play.

repair is the most important skill after 6e sense for anything but light tanks and low tier tds

 

BIA = useless, BIA makes only sense if you have +4 skills OR a tank which needs no camo + has 2 loaders + doesnt need all driving skills + mounts vents....

 

if you dont use vents, mounting BIA is beyond retarded (im not kidding),

 

basically only arty, and high tier germany heavys and TDs benefit from BIA, since they have almost negative camo value, for every other tank picking BIA is just wrong on so many levels...

 

example: T110E5 with 4 skills and no chance of getting 5e

 

Commander: 6e sense, repair, view range, camo 

Gunner: repair, snap shot, dead eye, camo

Driver: repair, smooth ride, off-road driving, clutch breaking

Loader: repair, safe stowage, adrenaline rush, camo

 

if you put BIA on this, you not only give up 3x camo + clutch breaking, you ALSO give up dead eye and adrenaline rush (perks )

 

so you can choose between:

- camo

- view range

- slighlty better mobility

- 10% faster reload when low hp

- more module dmg

 

for overall buff...

 

you all seem to have vent (optics better, wtf, 10% viewrange) yet consider BIA, let me tell you this 3x 40% camo + some view range perks + vent gives BETTER effective view range as BIA + optics.. bia = vents, so its optics vs view range perk and camo, even on a heavy with bad camo, the camo skill will decrease your signature more as you gain with optics... (totally NOT counting all the other advantages here....

I don't even have a 2 skill crew yet, but this seems true intuitively. I was considering getting BIA on my WZ-132 crew once I opened up the third skill grind, but I think I'd rather have off-road driving, recon, and designated target.

A couple things on which I would like some elaboration (because I don't quite get it):

 

 

Module damage inflicted by projectiles are directly proportional to the caliber size of shells, and the chances of actually inflicting damage onto certain modules are subjected to an RNG roll. Since Deadeye works by increasing the probability of damaging modules, pairing that perk with a larger caliber gun allows you to have higher chances of actually damaging and/or destroying modules upon every hit.

The description on Preventative Maintenance is backwards, it reduces engine fires not fuel tank fires.

 

Mentor got too high of a rating, it should be a 1 for "actively hurts your tank by taking a spot away from an actually useful skill."

You lose less by using BIA than Vents. Heavies generally need Rammer/Vstab/GLD and light heavies/meds need Rammer/Vstab/Optics, all of which are way too important to load Vents. With BIA you lose much less by putting it on because few crew skills outside of the main three actually make much of an impact at all. Your example with all the specialty skills (Recon, Offroad, Dead Eye, etc.) are all things that generally make less or just slightly more of a difference than BIA does.

 

The thing about those skills is that their use is ALWAYS specific to the tank. To determine if Offroad Driving is useful, you need to look up the terrain resistance values on the tank's suspension to see what benefit it will provide. To determine if Clutch Braking is useful, you need to look at the rotation speed on the suspension and whether or not the tank's playstyle makes use of faster turning; very few do. Not all tanks really need Safe Stowage. Dead Eye is a flat 3% chance to damage modules, and comparing that to reloading faster with BIA is tank-specific.

 

Many tanks take zero benefit from most of the specialty skills, and then the couple left that are good don't outweigh the benefits of BIA.

 

You cannot generalize this discussion as to whether these skills are better or worse. It's always specific to the tank.

If I have a crew with 4 skills, one of those will 100% be BIA. Maybe, just maybe, I would drop it on tanks with just one loader or radioman. If there are two, or three of those than I consider BIA a must.

 

Off-road driving, adrenaline rush and deadeye are sometimes useful, but BIA works always on every tank and in every situation. And I certainly don't want to see no bloody firemen in my crew.

This, plus the numerical ratings seem a bit arbitrary. It would be more useful (albeit simplistic) if the skills were rated on a binary scale (i.e. "good" or "not good") for each tank class. This is just a minor quibble, though. The article gives a good account of what skills are and are not useful for generic tanks of each type.

The opportunity cost of BIA is much smaller with a small crew though. Also, remember that BIA gives "a slight buff", but what this means is something about 2.2% to soft stats IIRC. This includes view range, accuracy, aim time, reload, turning, acceleration. That's quite a few things that a meaningful, even if the bonus is not great. For comparison, recon gives 2% view range and SA gives 3%. Clutch braking is 5% turning. Snapshot gives 7.5% for turret rotation only, and not overall accuracy, and does nothing for hull. This makes it worthwhile at least as a 3rd or 4th slot. For a 4 man crew at later stages, the real opportunity cost of BIA is probably 3% view range, 5% rotation and 7.5% reduction in turret dispersion. The Loader can go suck on his firefighting. I think the gains do compare favorably.

Module damage inflicted by projectiles are directly proportional to the caliber size of shells, and the chances of actually inflicting damage onto certain modules are subjected to an RNG roll. Since Deadeye works by increasing the probability of damaging modules, pairing that perk with a larger caliber gun allows you to have higher chances of actually damaging and/or destroying modules upon every hit.

 

 

Yes and no. Let's look at the 130mm on the IS-7 and the 100mm on the Obj 140. For a single shot the 130mm has a higher chance of inflicting module damage, and deadeye increases that even more just like you said. However, the Obj 140 can get two shots off in the same time that the IS-7 get's one shot off. So if you average the increased chance of module damage over time the faster firing gun will generally get the most benefit.

130mm shells deal 180 module damage; 100mm deals 135. The ammo rack on the 140 normally has 210HP undamaged and 140HP if it's damaged (after the regen time). Assuming the ammo rack you are targeting was already damaged to 140HP, a 130mm shell penetrating and hitting the rack would have a base 0.27 chance of destroying it instantly without Deadeye, where the 100mm shells would have 0.0729 chance of destroying it in 2 shots (discounting the health regen during your reload).

 

Of course, all of this also depends on the health values of the modules you are targeting in the first place. For a full health ammo rack, it would be more beneficial to have Deadeye on the 100mm and risk destroying it in 2 shots (or 3, if the rack regens enough health in the engagement) than the 130mm.

Each situation varies. That is the problem with hypotheticals, real life doesn't always work out that way. Some instances you will be where a high alpha would work better, in other instances a high DPM is better. My playstyle I try to take advantage of high DPM, so you can see that deadeye would probably be better for my high DPM/lower caliber tanks. It might be different for someone else. Anyway, I guess the point I'm trying to make is that I feel that deadeye is equally useful for low caliber guns vs high caliber. High caliber guns get the most out of the skill for individual shots, while lower caliber get the benefit for multiple shots.

 

How much of a priority would you consider clutch braking to be for a brawling tank? 

 
It's pretty useful for keeping your strong armor facing the enemy and helps prevent them from getting to your sides. I'd probably put it as a third or fourth skill. Repair is more important, and depending on the tank off road driving and smooth ride should come before it.

Maybe with that extra two seconds, you notice they take cover behind a rock?  Maybe in those extra two seconds, you notice they become a one-shot when you otherwise wouldn't have gotten that information?  Maybe in a clan wars battle, an opportunistic enemy pokes over the ridge only to get tracked, de-lit, re tracked (while not lit) but your team knows he's still there, only tracked so he can be finished.

 

I think there's merit to this perk, especially for tanks with long view ranges, snipey guns, and fast reload times.  3rd, maybe 4th skill.

In a E5 vs. E5 situation, having full camo skill on all crewmembers gives you a 13m spotting margin to the other E5. In your example the margin would be 5-7m.

 

If you put BiA on an E5 vs. a "vanilla" E5, you get a margin of 8m spotting distance.

 

I fail to see how camo skill is useful on an E5, especially since we're in randoms with binoc'd TD's and meds with optics running full camo skill crews.

I don't know what to think about this perk. I ran designated target for a while in my and didn't find it particularly useful in that tank. That extra 2 seconds didn't really help my team hit the target because the lit tank usually got unlit by ducking behind hard cover when their sixth sense went off. It is useful for keeping scouts lit if they've ducked behind soft cover but running into a non-YOLO scout player on the other team is a fairly rare occurrence.

You now trade 3 crewman with camo, which means you effective get outspotted (camo skill is way more effective as even optics, let alone bia..)

both clutch braking and off-road driving buff mobility more as BIA...

also both dead eye and adrenaline dont work, while for itself not worth so much, combined with the other crap, its for sure worth more...

Wrong. At 100% Camo skill on all crew members it's something like +30% camo IIRC, which is only roughly 3% on the E5 when moving (which is all of the time in an E5) and 8% when sitting still. You're only putting it on three of the four, and you don't have it fully trained, so the effect is practically useless.

Yes Dead Eye and AR no longer work, but you will put on a skill like your precious Camo instead just as in your own example. Also Clutch Braking and Offroad are practically useless on the E5, check your stats.

optics boosts view range 10%, camo reduces viewrange (of the enemy) by 10-40%, the 2 view range skills also boost viewrange, all in all some viewrange + camo skill + vent will give thus effective WAY better view range / camo as optics / bia

while ALSO buffing other aspects of the game...

Also wrong, see camo info above. Optics is +10% to 400m view range, or +40m. Camo partially trained on only three crew members will only give something like a 10-20% bonus to your THREE PERCENT view range reduction from your 3% moving camo, aka utterly useless.

How much of a priority would you consider clutch braking to be for a brawling tank?

Most tanks have no need for this, but as I said in my first post, it's entirely dependent on the tank. You need to play the specific tank and ask yourself if turning left and right more quickly will help you in a fight or if your turning speed is already sufficient to keep turning with a flanking target. Even so, it's easy to prevent yourself from getting into situations where you are depending on turning to keep your armor to the enemy in the vast majority of tanks. It's rarely a concern, even more rarely worth putting an entire crew skill into.

Gehakte are you trying to argue that you should train repair over camouflage on mediums or tank destroyers?
Repairing stuff is important, yeah, but unless your plan is to take as much damage as possible I'd rather train something that helps me avoid modules being destroyed

 

Repair is, at most, a half-second or third skill for most mediums, the only exceptions I can think of are the STB-1 and E-50/M
