Map reviews: Erlenberg and Redshire by Oneechan

Recommended Posts

Great review.  I love the pictures and positioning.  The way you have the pictures makes it very easy to understand your reasoning behind the spots, as well as see why they are useful.

General comments.

-Both flanks are equally viable on Erlenberg.

-As DJ mentioned, overhead map with location of the numbers would help. Even I have trouble seeing where exactly some positions are from cinematic views, so your average reader will be a bit lost.

-Also, EU's got a really fucked up Meta on Redshire that I would put the disclaimer in bold, because it plays out quite differently on NA.

And right when we all thought WG couldn't fix a damn map, even if their lives depended on it, they mostly fixed these 2 maps.

I do not find Na's meta to be different. Atleast for west server it isnt.

He place a heavy emphasis on the east flank which is, for all intend and purpose, useless if the other team dominant the center hill. Only time east flank might cost you a game is when too many pubbies derp there and die so that you're way outnumbered.

oh I gotcha. I have noticed that sometimes when there is an excess of TDs on the north spawn team.

I have avoided the east at all costs until last night.  Decided to play it just to see how it plays out.  You are very effectively pinned in that location (especially from the north).  In both cases I believe a base defense is better, because it has shots to support the west and can easily contain a push from the east, which has to come across the open.

The east can work if they send a lot of tanks there, simply by keeping them busy or making good trades.  However, you would usually beat those tanks/teams just as easily by defending at base and pushing in via the west.

99% of the time for me its all west as well. I often lose lately as I solopub and that map is so dmaned large if im in anything besides a T54 etc I cant flex back. But 9/10 when I lose its because a solid platoon beats my tomatoes west or because our team goes mainly east and is butchered. Either way it seems to be similiar to lakeville, 1 side wins the map most times and for most players east seems useless.

These two happend to be maps I know semi well but Im dying for more of these guides, esp on maps like Svergorsk where I just do not know where to go.

Please keep these rolling in. Man I love all things RBS and can`t imagine not having it now.

Very good read, thank you!

Especially on the new Ruinberg I have had quite Problems finding suitable locations. This gives me some ideas where to deploy.

As already mentioned, it would be better in terms of overview if you mark the locations on the minimap aswell.

More of those, please! :)

Can you put the numbers on the overhead maps?  Might make it easier to get the big picture (no pun intended).

Exactly this, I won't even read the article without it.

On Redshire

I go east by default, unless there are clear reasons to not do it (lemmingtrain heading that way, big arty party, tier 8 med vs tier 10 heavy etc)

When looking from a south POV:

- winning east seems easier (unless lots of arty)

- moving from east to noth / mid / hill is easier (you can take the middle ridge + advance towards the rocks in the north)

- easier to fall back and keep fighting

Also when east is lost, as south you still can defend from the houses in a proper way

As north, when you go east, its fight or die, you cant really retreat and advancing is also tricky, making it all in all harder

(Himmelsdorf almost always castle, unless: lemmingtrain heading that way, big arty party, tier 8 med vs tier 10 heavy etc

From south i always go east on Erlenberg.  Especially as i typically play fast mediums.  The only exceptions are like you said, lemming train or arty party.

If you have a fast med like Leo1 or 140 you can push all the way up to the houses before most TD's make it to the NE corner of the map.  If you know your spotting mechanics and ridgelines you can possibly do this undetected and get shots in.  If they push up and around the hill there you have plenty of ridgelines to make an escape.  Either way unless you derp it up, it will lead to early damage for your team, which is vitally important.

Helps to clarify which of the two maps you're talking about.

I went back and added in the marks on the minimap like you guys wanted, and for future articles it will be that way as well

Thank you very much!  From previous times helping people with maps it makes a huge difference for them to see it from the minimap perspective.

Confirming that both views are extremely helpful for one of the most needy in the game. It enables me to "integrate" in way not possible with just one or the other.

Please more. I can't get enough of this level of explanation.

+1
